Chapter. 14

"You have until 6:00am, until killing is allowed!" The king bellowed, "let the games commence!"

As soon as the king announced the games were on, I peered back to see Tom, before sprinting quickly towards Joey.

"Where's Brooke?" I asked concerned. Joey turned his head slowly towards me,

"She sprinted away, she said all she wanted to do was die." He said slowly, almost avoiding tears.

"What?" I asked wih panic. "She'll be dead as soon as it turns light!"

"I know, we have until 6:00am, before it's too late to find her." He sighed. I had my weapon and rucksack on me. I looped the bag of arrows over my shoulder and held my bow firmly,

"Well, I guess we have to find her." I said

"Agreed." Joey said. Picking up his large sword,

"What if we find your little friend first?" A voice came from behind. Both of our heads shot around, to see Archie and three other vampires.

"Is that a challenge?" I growled back, stepping closer to show no fear.

"What else would it be?" He grinned evily. I couldn't see Tom anywhere, which wasn't normal as he was always near trouble,

"Where's Tom?" I asked

"We split up, four vampires went with him and three came with me." He spat

"Well that says something about you seeing as Tom got the extra vampire." I grinned

"Nah, they're just trying to kiss up to him." Archie spat back.

"Come on, we've gotta get going if we're going to find Brooke first," I said, turning to Joey.

"Bring it on, mutt." Archie sneered. I ignored him and turned around to run with Joey,

"Where did you last see her?" I asked when we were out of vampire hearing.

"She ran this way." Joey said, jogging next to me. He walked ahead and cut the vines with his sword to clear the way. I bent down to pick up a pile of leaves, a tip I'd learnt from my brothers, the leaves blew in the direction of the wind, giving out Brooke's sent,

"She went this way." I stated. Joey didn't argue we just carried on until we reached a huge, wide, rapid flowing river. "She didn't go this way, she can't swim, the only way across is by swimming through the rapids." I gasped

"What are we going to do?" Joey sighed

"I can't get her scent," I sighed, "that only means she's in water or twenty miles away, but she wouldn't walk that far into the woods without screaming, and if she's in water, she must be here." I said

"You don't think?" Joey started, "you don't think she purposely went in the water to hide from us," Joey shuddered, I was about to answer when I realised it was getting slightly lighter, that meant one thing, the killing started any minute.

"You have half an hour before the killing starts," an announcer said, almost reading my exact thoughts.

"Help!" Came an ear splitting, croaky scream, "help! Haley! Joey! Anyone! Help me!" That familiar voice screamed.

"Brooke!" I yelled back. I dropped my stuff on the ground after spotting a figure trying to swim in the water. I noticed a group of vampires bending over at the shore. Nobody would be stupid enough to go in these lethal rapids but Brooke did it so I could to. I sprinted over to her before diving clear into the water,

"Haley! What are you doing!" Joey yelled from the shore.

"Brooke, grab my hand!" I yelled, clinging onto a fallen tree. I felt something grab my leg and the next thing I knew I was dragged under the water. I stared down through the dirty water, realising it was a vampire, but one I didn't know. I heard a loud cannon blow above the water, which meant one thing, killing started now. I was desperate for air now, this vampire only wanted to kill me. I took a firm grip around their neck and wrung it backwards, hearing a snap, here came the werewolf strength part now, I ripped the head clean off. Well, I've never done that it my human form, and you know what, it seems a whole lot grosser now. I swum up to the surface gasping for air.

"Where's Alec!" Archie yelled at me. I lifted the head and threw it onto the shore. "Shit!" Archie yelled, rolling the head away.

"Brooke! Please grab on!" I begged as Brooke scrambled over to me.

"Hey! It's fair, a friend for a friend!" Archie's evil smug grin flashed. He dived in and tried grabbing Brooke, before getting his teeth near her neck. I'd pulled him underneath the water before he could do anything else. I frantically tried to push Brooke to the other side of the rive, when I heard a splash in the water. Joey's face appeared,

"I've got Brooke, can you handle the vampire?" Joey asked concerned, I nodded briefly before being dragged under by Archie. He was trying to strangle me, with an arm, right around my neck. I frantically pulled him away, before feeling a painfully bite on my wrist. I peered down through the water, seeing blood from my hand, before staring back at Archie in disbelief, he'd bitten me. I swum away as fast as I could, reaching the shore, whilst Joey pulled me out of the water. I suddenly remembered that time when the novice vampire bit me, their venom is strong but nothing is more painful than a bite from an ancient vampire. I screamed in pain, clutching my hand, whilst trying to hold back my tears. Joey bent down quickly,

"What- what are...you doing?" I said through slurred words as the venom started to get to me.

"Sucking the venom out," Joey said briefly, "sorry if it hurts, but it could save your damn life." He said. I felt him place his dry mouth over my wound, before spitting out a load of venom. After awhile he stopped, "That's all of it, I think." He sighed, placing an arm over my shoulder.

"Thanks," I sighed, staring at the other side of the riverbank where the vampires stood. "Let's get outta here." I said, climbing to my feet. We stopped at a large oak tree, at least 15 miles from our meeting with Archie, it had many flat, long branches so we made a camp there.
