Lily's Pov
I sat in the overstuffed armchair that was closest to the fireplace. Most people had been staying in their dorm rooms for the past couple days. We still had three days without classes and people rarely left the common rooms, even for meals.

My friends and I were the only people who hung out in the common room for the most part. I had my nose stuck in a book and I was praying that no one would try and talk to me. Remus sat in the chair next to me and I assumed he was doing the same thing. Sirius sat on the couch and Mady was on the ground in front of him between his legs. James, per usual, was trying to be the center of attention by sitting on top of a table. He'd decided that he would read everyone's mail to them while we were sitting down.

The only other people in the common room were Alice, Frank, and Kingsley Shacklebolt.

"Mady! You've got a letter from Andromeda, can I read it to you?" James asked. "Sure." Mady Replied.

He cleared his voice and in a terrible impression of Andromeda, he began to read. "Dear Madilin, I heard what happened at Hogwarts with the Death Eaters and such. I hope you aren't too shaken. In other news, Sam has really warmed up to Nymphadora -good lord that's a terrible name- they both enjoy playing with the cat. When you come home for the summer we simply must go shopping together. I have been missing you a lot lately, I can't wait to see you again. Love Andromeda." He finished and folded the letter back up.

"Do you want me to write her back?" He asked but Mady shook her head. "No I'll write her back later. My handwriting is better than yours." She joked.

He rolled his eyes but smiled anyway.

"Babe? What are you doing to my hair?" Mady asked Sirius as he fiddled with her hair. "I'm braiding it dear."He said and James scoffed at his poor attempt to braid her hair. "Pfft! Move over rookie, Alice taught me how to do this." He sat down and pushed Sirius over. He cracked his knuckles and started to undo the mess that Sirius had made. I couldn't help but smile at him.

"Can you read the post now Sirius?" Frank asked and Sirius sauntered over to the table with a huff. He picked up a small pile of large manilla envelope. "This one's for Evans, there's one for Moony too, and Mady, and Frank, and Alice." He shuffled through the pile of mail and handed out the envelopes. I opened mine up and pulled out an enormous amount of paperwork. I read the top piece of paper aloud.

"Congratulations Ms Evans, We are pleased to announce that you have been selected to become apart of the Universal Honors Society for Witches and Wizards. The UHSWW is a group for students that have consistently shown exemplary grades during their time at school. Being apart of the UHSWW provides many opportunities that would not be available before. If you wish to continue to the next round in our selection process, please fill out the included paperwork." I finished and began to look over the paperwork.

"You gonna continue with the whole 'selection process' thing?" Mady asked me. "Of course I am. Aren't you going to?" I asked her.

"Nah, it wouldn't be worth it. My grades are good but my behavioral record is just god awful. I wouldn't make it past the third round of screening." She said and pushed the envelope aside while James continued to braid her hair.

"Okay... ooh James, this ones from your mum. You want me to read it?" Sirius asked.

James nodded and furrowed his brows in concentration. Sirius opened up the letter and began to read.

"Dear James, I do hope you've been staying out of trouble lately. Your father and I miss you a lot but we were wondering if maybe you would like to invite your friends to stay with us over summer holiday. I know that some of them don't have a family To go home to and I would love to have more children in the house. We have enough guest bedrooms for everyone and I would love the extra company. Please stay safe, I know you have a knack for getting into trouble. Love Mum." He finished and set the letter down. "You want me to write her back for you?" He offered.

"Sure." James said and Sirius scrambled for a piece of parchment and a quill. "Ready?" James asked and Sirius nodded yes. "Dear Mum, Sirius is coming home with us as usual and I'll invite the rest of the gang too." He paused so Sirius could finish writing then continued. "I'm sure Mady would love to come with us and maybe I can convince Lily to come also. I'm sure you'd love them and I really hope you can meet them. I miss you a lot and I can't wait to get back home. I'll see you in a month if not sooner, I have a feeling that Hogwarts may send us home a little earlier this year with everything that's been happening. Love and miss you, James." He finished up and Sirius scrawled out the last couple of words.

"Mady..." Sirius started when he picked up the next letter in the pile of envelopes. "This one's from your mum." He said. A dark silence filled the room and she motioned for him to bring it over. Sirius gingerly passed it to her and she opened it with careful precision. Her eyes quickly scanned the letter and she threw it into the fireplace next to her.

"What was in it?" I asked her cautiously. "The usual." She said, trying to keep her voice steady. "Asking about who Sam's with and asking me if I want to come home." Her voice cracked slightly at the end and she blinked back tears.

"They don't want me back though, Mikey wrote me a few days ago telling me that You-Know-Who's been pressuring them to get me to come back. I guess he wants a spy in the castle that's not a Slytherin." She said as she got her voice under control. No one said anything, they just looked down at the floor. James continued to silently braid Mady's hair. "Is there anything else for me in the pile?" She interrupted the silence.

"Yeah, there's a box of sweets from Lily's parents and a couple magazines." He said and passed her multiple clothes catalogues. I made a mental note to ask her to borrow them later.

Sirius flipped through the pile, reading who all the letters were addressed to. It was mostly junk mail, nothing important. He started tossing the unimportant stuff into the fire.  "You almost done with Mady's hair? I'd love to have my girlfriend back." Sirius joked and James motioned for Mady to pass up her hair ties and he secured the last braid. "Now I'm done." James said and stood up from the couch. He ruffled his hands through his messy hair and walked with the utmost confidence over to a chair closer to me. I buried myself in my book again, hoping to avoid attention.

Sirius stood up and started cuddling with Mady on the couch again. He held her very close and her head was tucked neatly underneath his. I did my best to hold back a smile. Ever since she'd run away, I'd never seen her smile like she did with him. It made me happy.

My thoughts were interrupted by James scooting his chair closer to me. I braced myself for a bout of shameless flirting but I was pleasantly surprised by what happened next. "What's that?" He asked and gestured to the ballpoint pen in my hand.

I smirked and looked up at him. "You don't know what a pen is?" I asked in disbelief. He shook his head and curiosity shone in his eyes.

"Well..." I struggled to find the perfect wording. "It's sort of like a quill that doesn't run out of ink for months." I did my best to explain. A confused expression filled James's face. "What kind of charm does that? Besides it doesn't look like a quill." As much as I tried to deny it, I found his bewildered expression very endearing. "It's not magic Potter, it's a muggle invention." I said and laughed.

"Can I see it?" He asked and I handed it to him. He clicked it a few times and then started scribbling on the armchair he was sitting in. "James! You aren't aloud to do that." I tried to hold back a smile and he grinned at me when he realized I was grinning too. "Lily Evans." He said in a quiet voice. "Will you do me the honor of going on a date with me?" He grinned in the lopsided way that he always did and ran his hands through his hair. I pondered the question for a moment. "If I were to say yes, where would you take me? We aren't allowed to go to Hogsmeade anymore." I asked and his eyes immediately beamed with hope. "We could walk the grounds, or sneak out to Hogsmeade."

"I'll meet you in the common room at five o clock on Saturday. You better have something good planned after all these years of asking." I said and he shot up to his feet like a rocket. Eager to plan our first date.
