My phone started screeching its usual wake up alarm causing me to roll over and attempt to make it stop. In the process I knocked my glass of water on the floor, which made a deafening crack and caused my cat Peaches to jump a few feet in the air. She was quick to retreat under my bed, and would most likely stay there for the next few hours.

I groaned as I swung my legs out of bed, avoiding the water, and stood up – which I accidently did too fast, causing me to stumble. I shuffled out of my room and towards the kitchen to find paper towels when my alarm sounded again. I realised I'd hit snooze and the time between alarms was only 5 minutes.

"Turn that off right now!" My brother Austin shouted through his closed door from upstairs. I'd rather hear my alarm downstairs then his snoring up there, I thought to myself as I grabbed the paper towels and once again shuffled back to my room to turn the piercing sound off.

Realising that I would not get any extra time for sleep, I quickly cleaned up the spillage, dumped the soaked paper towels in my bin and made my way to the kitchen for breakfast. I rummaged through the cereal cupboard to only find bran flakes and Shreddies. Great, only plain cereals left.

Austin walked through the kitchen door – well, when I say walked, I mean dragged his feet – rubbing his eyes and headed towards the fridge. He grabbed the orange juice and drank straight from the carton. Eugh.

"Ugh, can you not? Some of us like to drink that. In a glass, may I add." I said, rolling my eyes.

"It's all yours," Austin replied, screwing the lid back on. "Here, catch!" He threw the carton in my direction and just before it hit my head I caught it. Empty. Of course.

I threw it back at him as he walked out the kitchen with a smug smile on his face.

So with no juice and only plain cereals, I left the kitchen and ventured for my shower towel. I grabbed it, ran into the bathroom before Austin could and switched on the water. I took off my pyjamas and jumped in the shower.

It was to be my first day at a new school – my first day as a high school sophomore to be exact. Well, not exactly a sophomore, as I don't live in America anymore. I'll never get that full high school experience over here in England, but I as I applied shampoo to my hair, I wondered if 'secondary school' would be at all similar. Freshman year back in the USA was plain and simple, nothing like the movies. But then again, that's the exact description of me.

I rinsed my hair, turned off the shower and stepped out, wrapping my towel around me. As I got dressed into my assigned uniform, I thought of all my friends back in Florida who would already be back at school, though they wouldn't have to wear such hideous uniforms. I grabbed my hairdryer, dried my hair and decided to apply a small layer on makeup. There wasn't a rule against it like I'd heard there was in English schools – but I wasn't going to overdo it on my first day.

I ventured out into the hallways of my house as Austin came stomping down the stairs in a similar uniform to mine.

"Ready?" He asked as he straightened his tie, dramatically may I add.

"Ready!" I replied, though I could tell my voice showed how nervous I was.

What if I don't make friends? What if they make fun of me for having an American accent? Are British people really as posh as their stereotypical citizen is represented? Do I have to drink tea? I don't like tea. My thoughts rushed around my mind, bouncing from side to side, making me slightly dizzy.

As I focused back on reality, I saw my mum coming down the stairs.

"C'mon, we don't want to be late!" She said with a supportive smile spreading across her face. I picked up my bag and walked out the front door.

How bad could school be?
