Chapter Fourteen

'They're good actors, I'll give 'em that.' I said, nudging the woman with the toe of my poison green Chuck Taylors.

'We better go find the other one.' Jensen said, and Grace followed him out.

Crouching next to the slit-throat version of the woman, I saw the blood over her neck had gone gunky and started clumping together, which was weird, as it was supposedly fresh... and the skin around it looked like it was peeling off...

She suddenly brought her fist forward, smashing into my mouth and throwing me back with enough force to make me hit the wall.

Spitting blood (and thankfully not teeth) I stood just as the Shifter pissbolted out the door down the white-washed halls.

'Son of a bitch.' I muttered, leaving the unconscious, innocent woman on the floor and running after the disguised disfigured freak.

Turning corners and checking offices, I swore in exasperation as I was led back to the marble and glass staircase with no clue where the Shifter was.

Wiping the trickle of blood from the corner of my mouth, I dialed Jensen's number and waited for him to pick up.

'Hello?'

'Hey!' I yelled, too loudly. 'It wasn't the bitchy woman- the Shifter was pretending to be dead. If only huh?'

'Well that's convenient.' Jensen muttered sarcastically.

'Tell me about it.' I sighed. 'If you see anybody outside the vault who shouldn't be there, shoot on sight.'

'With what, my spidey sense?' He said.

'Do you want me to come down there?' I snapped.

'I'm not in the mood for your empty threats.' He sighed, bored.

'I'll come down there right now and-'

'Alex!'

'Fine!' I said. 'I dunno, just go all spastic vampire on the bastard.'

When vampires got pissed, or were fighting, or were about to bite someone, or whatever else, their eyes went crimson and fangs grew out over all their teeth, not just the standard fangs over their eye teeth.

'But they taste funny.' He whined.

'I will come down there and kick your fairy princess ass...' I warned.

He hung up laughing.

***

Going through each floor seemed to go on forever, even though there was only seven floors and I was already on the fifth.

Jensen called me once more to say they'd lost the second ShapeShifter- after how well his first assumption had gone down, he didn't trust himself with the younger kids.

Oh! And to say that the old dude, a bank teller, was beginning to have a claustrophobic panic attack.

'Great.' I sighed, shaking my head. 'What else could go wrong?'

'They've started asking of our demands.' Jensen said as I heard Grace say in the background, 'Liam! Don't talk to the cops! Get off the phone!!'

'I gathered.' I hung my head. 'This is getting worse by the minute.'

'We need to end this, now.' Jensen said.

'Thankyou, Captain Obvious!' I cried. 'What do you want, a medal?'

'It would be nice, yes.' He sniffed.

'Well you can go- whoa!' I ducked just as the dagger stuck in the wall behind me where my head had just been.

'Alex? What happened?' Jensen asked as I saw the Shifter run off, now Shifted in a new body.

'I'll call you back.' I said and ran after him.
