Chapter Thirteen
I pinched the bridge of my nose. 'As soon as this is over, remind me NEVER to speak to you...EVER again.'
Jensen laughed, walking around the people. 'You're just jealous.'
'What's that freak doing?' Grace stood on her tiptoes and whispered in my ear.
'I don't really know him.' I said, loud enough for everyone to hear. 'He just followed me home one day.'
Eventually Jensen came back, and I shut the vault.
He had gone around, trying to be inconspicuous as he tried to SNIFF OUT the Shifter.
'You're like a bloodhound.' Grace said, crossing her arms.
'Like you can talk, mutt.' Jensen growled.
'Stop it!' I cried. 'This is not the time nor the place!' I sighed. 'So did you find out who it is?'
'I'm a little confused.' He admitted. 'I've never been wrong before, but-'
'Full of yourself much?' Grace cut through.
'If you don't stop fighting I swear I will bang both your heads together and throw you through the wall.' I warned.
Jensen continued. 'It kinda seems like...there's more than one.'
You had to be kidding.
I laughed, slightly hysterically. 'Oh, you're funny! Now seriously, who is it?'
He didn't say anything.
'Uh...Alex?' Grace waved her hand in front of my face, and for a second it didn't register.
'Is, uh, is that homicidal look normal for her?' Jensen asked, taking a step back.
My fingers itched to wrap around his neck and squeeze the life out of him- but then again, that wouldn't do me any good.
And you couldn't kill a vampire by strangling them.
'Which ones?' I choked out.
'Hey, you should see this!' Liam cried, breaking the tension, but only slightly.
We looked over at him, looking through the blinds at all the cop cars down below, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SPOTLIGHT.
'Liam,' I hissed, 'Get out of the light!'
'Oh.' He smiled. 'Right.' And went away again.
'Why are humans made so stupid?' I sighed to myself.
'You know, you used to be human too.' Jensen pointed out.
'What are you, my stalker?' I snapped. 'And not for long, I wasn't.'
'Don't flatter yourself, love.' Jensen waved a hand. 'Anyway, the ShapeShifters, remember?'
'Of course I do.' I scoffed. 'Which ones are they?'
'That chick that told you off.' Grace said. I didn't bother asking how she knew- frankly I didn't care.
'And...well... one of the little kids.' Jensen rubbed the back of his head nervoulsy. 'I dunno which one.'
'Oh, yeah, well that helps plenty!' I was yelling at the end.
'Don't get mad at me!' He yelled. 'This is your job that went to Hell, not mine.'
'As if you're lucky enough to get jobs.' I scoffed.
'I do!'
'Whatever!'
'Stop!' Grace yelled, jumping between us. Good thing too, because I was getting ready to punch him out. 'You can kill each other later, but there's innocent people in there now. Don't you remember the massacre last time?'
Only three Shifters had been the cause, yet hundreds of people had died within eight days.
There was two now, in a far smaller space, surrounded by about eighteen unsuspecting, weak humans.
You do the math.
'OK, OK fine.' I said, taking a deep breath and feeling my anger wash away. 'I've got a penknife and envelope opener- but they've all been here awhile...the skin'd be coming off easily soon.'
'That's SO gross.' Grace said, and I narrowed my eyes.
'You're not helping.'
'Can't you just call up your weaponry?' Jensen asked.
I shook my head. 'Hanging around you has dampened whatever it is that summons my weaponry- even my tattoo's stopped burning.'
It had, and the lack of pain had been nice, for awhile. Now I kinda wished I still had it, to find the Shifter easier.
'Do you know which kid it is?' I asked, walking over the long strip of lino and marble to the heavy silver and iron vault.
Jensen shook his head. 'Sorry.'
I sighed again, spinning the massive turn thing that unlocked the many locks and bolts that kept the money safe. There wasn't any in there- just eighteen freaked people and two pain-in-the-ass ShapeShifters.
Sliding the envelope down my sleeve into my hand but keeping it on the side they couldn't see, I said, 'Hey you, blonde lady.'
She looked up aprehensively. 'What?'
'You can go. Come with us.'
She looked down, then back up fearfully. 'Uh...no...I think I might stay here with the others.'
'No, I'm serious. You can leave. Just come with us. Right now.'
She shook her head. 'I-I'm not sure...'
'No. You're coming with us. RIGHT NOW.' I snapped.
Taking a deep breath the woman came out, and Grace shut the vault with a massive bang behind us.
I walked behind the woman as Jensen led us up a flight of stairs, seen as the elevators were down.
He led us into a storage kinda room, and the lady faced me as Grace leant against the doorframe behind me.
'I don't know what you want, but please, don't hurt me!' She cried, close to tears.
'You're sick, you know that?' I spat, crossing my arms and flashing the silver.
'I-I don't know what you're talking about.' She almost sobbed.
'Really? Then explain this.' Jensen opened a cupboard door and an identical version of the woman toppled out, wearing a white nightdress, her throat slit.
The woman shrieked and fell back, unconscious.
'What the Hell?' Grace said, pushing herself off the doorway.
