I wasn't expecting him to be so good at hating me. The way he looked at me broke my heart in ways I never knew it could.
"She's going to talk. It wasn't easy though." Andrew stared at me like I was nothing. He looked at me like trash on the freeway.
"As I suspected. That's her mother in her." Mrs. Genevieve paraded around in a slick sleeveless red dress and a diamond choker. Her hair pulled back tightly into a bun.
"So you're the one my son has been running around with." Rominoff looked down on me from across the table. I refused to look into his eyes, in fear of feeling the same thing I felt when catching the look Andrew gave me.
Rominoff wore a fancy expensive suit, like Andrew. He looked to be in his forties, like Mrs Genevieve. He had the same hair as Andrew, only his was starting to turn gray in certain places.
"Why did you have me run around with her anyway? It was a waste of my time." Andrew's words stung.
"Easy my son, it was what we needed." His mother joined him by his side.
"Why pity her mother? She's not worth it. Easy to trick, but not easy to love."
I knew he was faking. I knew he really did love me. But everything he said felt too real.
I fought back the tears to show my bravery.
"Oh, don't fight them. Cry if you must, just don't show your face doing it." Rominoff chuckled.
I bit the inside of my cheeks. My face flushed. My fists clenched.
"What do you know about your parents?" Rominoff pulled an armchair from the corner of the room and set it in front of the table across from me.
"Less than you, I'm guessing." I finally looked him in the eye. My body clenched. His eyes were a deep brown almost black.
"Amusing, isn't she." Mrs Genevieve spoke sarcastically.
"Where are your parents?" Rominoff ignored his wife's remark and continued his questions.
"How should I know? They stopped sending me letters, probably hoping they wouldn't lead you to me." I folded my hands.
"Ironic." Andrew scoffed.
"You think this is a game don't you? You think your parents will come and save you then put us all in jail, just like the fairytales told you. News flash, this is no fairytale. You're sitting on a couch bought with money I make by killing spies children. Your hands are bound and a couple of guns are behind your back. Your parents just happen to be my worst enemies, and you're still trying to sound clever. Not such a good idea, don't you think?"
My body froze. My brave smile vanished. And any ounce of power I had left was now hiding in the corner with my dignity and hope.
He smiled noticing my change in character.
"There is one thing my wife didn't tell you about this operation." He leaned back in his seat.
"What's that?" My voice had become smaller and less cunning.
"Your parents disappeared off our maps, our trackers, and our records about two weeks ago. And we have reason to believe you know exactly where they are." Rominoff finished.
"I don't." I shook my head.
"I figured you wouldn't tell the truth." He motioned for his guards while standing up and walking towards the doors he came through.
The guards walked quickly towards me. The first one removed the gun from its pocket and pointed it at me.
"Wait no!" I screamed and the tears I had been holding in came all at once. I ducked my head and squeezed my eyes shut.
"Father wait!" Andrew called for his father.
"What? You want to watch?" Rominoff smiled.
"You're right, she probably does know where they are. And killing her kills any lead we have on them. Why not keep her around, she would make good bait, and I bet with a bit of persuasion, I could get it out of her." Andrew spoke to the back of his fathers head.
I slowly opened my eyes as Rominoff slowly turned around.
"That's my son. Take her to the Guest room, the small one. Franklin, let my son take her up. He knows what to do." He left with Mrs. Genevieve and the rest of the guards. Franklin, the one that was with Andrew when I got out of the truck, went with them.
Andrew and I were left alone.
I sobbed limply on the couch as Andrew tried to calm me down.
"Lucy it's okay, it's me again. I love you, I'm here calm down." He shushed me and pulled me off the couch. Forcing me to stand. I leaned all of my weight on him, too in shock to really stand on my own.
I didn't speak. I didn't move. I wouldn't even have breathed if I could do without it. I just sobbed into his shoulder.
"Shhhh. You're going to have to walk now okay? We're going to the guest room downstairs next to the maids room and cooks room. You'll be okay there." He lead me out of the room and down a spiral staircase.
It was only when we got to the bottom that I had finished crying into my hands. On the hidden first floor, their were three rooms and a basement. The maids room, the cooks room, and one guest room that I guessed was supposed to belong to a second maid. I'm just glad he didn't put me in the basement.
"I don't know what's going to happen tomorrow. But I will make sure you're never alone with them. I'm going to protect you." He pulled me into the small room with one single bed and a nightstand.
"You promise to do everything I say, right?" Andrew asked while sitting me on the edge of the bed.
"Yes..." I whispered with the remaining strength I had left.
"Okay. I'm going to have to cuff you to the bed, okay?" He stared at me.
I nodded.
He pulled a silver key out of his pocket and removed the cuff from my left hand. He then cuffed it to the head board of the bed.
He swung my legs on to the bed and covered them with the thin blanket.
"Try to get some sleep. I know this is hard, but I'll get you and your family out alive. That's my promise." He stroked my forehead slowly.
I didn't respond.
"Goodnight Lucy. May the force be with you." He whispered and kissed my head softly.
I heard the door close and lock behind me just after he flicked the lights off.
A single tear rolled down my cheek as I clutched the art necklace from my parents dangling loosely around my neck.
