*Emma's POV

Lunch went really well. Regina, Mary Margaret and the rest of our group were very nice and welcoming to Killian. Thankfully, Ruby was on her best behavior. I'm sure she guessed I'd give her my right hook if she teased Killian. Smart girl.

They made him feel comfortable and accepted, something that he didn't seem to be used to. Mary Margaret even invited Killian to the next football game, but I quickly fibbed that Killian had other plans, figuring that would be the last place he wanted to be.

Every time Regina tried to make a smart ass remark about my newfound obsession with Killian, Robin silenced her with a kiss. And every time, I threw him a grateful glance. Robin was the best. Him and David had become such close friends to me just as much as Regina and Mary Margaret were.

The rest of the day dragged on sluggishly. But finally the bell rang. Killian was waiting for me outside of my last period class. We smiled at each other.

"Ready to go Swan?" He asked.

"Yep, I just need to stop at my locker real quick to grab my Algebra textbook and then we're good to go."

After I got my textbook, Killian and I walked out to the parking lot towards my yellow bug.

"This is quite the vessel you captain, Swan," he said with a smirk. "How old is this thing? It looks like it belonged to your mother's mother."

I chuckled as we hopped in. "I'm not sure exactly. All I know is that it belonged to my foster mother's niece."

"Foster mother?" Killian asked, cocking his head to the side.

Crap. I can't believe I just let that slip out. I didn't particularly like broadcasting my home life to just anybody. But Killian wasn't some stranger who would judge me.

"Uh, yeah," I answered, my voice came out in a weak whisper. "Her name's Ingrid. She owns the local ice cream shop down on Main Street."

"I had no idea," he said softly. "I'm sorry."

"I don't want your pity, and I don't need it either," I snapped. "My parents didn't want me, and neither did the half a dozen foster parents I had. I've accepted it, and I'm over it."

His eyes went wide, he was thrown off guard by my defensive reaction. "E-Emma, I'm sorry. I-I didn't mean to upset you. I wasn't trying to take p-pity on you."

I sighed, feeling extremely guilty. "Killian, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have yelled at you like that. I know you didn't mean any harm. It's just that, I want my past to stay in my past. Before I came to Storybrooke I didn't exactly have an easy start. I don't want anyone to judge me for something that was outside of my control."

He gently, but hesitantly, placed his hand over mine. He didn't want to push me too far. "Hey, I would never judge you. You've only known me for less than two days and already you've been nicer to me than anyone ever has. You're the first real friend I've ever had. I know what it's like to want a fresh start and to want to keep your past buried."

"Thank you,"' I half-smiled, softly giving him a peck on the cheek. "You're one of the very few people that's ever been truly nice to me and has wanted to be my friend. So I guess we're in the same boat."

"What are you talking about?" He asked baffled, still overwhelmed by my kiss. I loved that he did that. "You're one of the most popular girls in school. I met some of your friends today, and I'm sure you have tons more."
