POV: Aqua
Finally, we reached the last hallway that would connect us to Warehouse Four. The door was the same as the others. The kind of door you would find on a submarine, in which you have to crank the wheel thing to open it. This gave the whole feeling of this place an even more claustrophobic feel that made me even more anxious to get out of here...or at least to my phone.
Jesus! I'm missing so much on Buzzfeed. Oh all those quizzes I won't be able to take, and the filters I won't get to try out on Snapchat. And I'll have to spend hours going through my feed in Instagram. Oh right. I've been kidnapped...and so has my sister. I have to save Ivy first. Not the phone. Well, she is kind of a bitch and if I had my phone then I could call 911. No. Get the sister. Not the phone. God! I gotta' get my priorities straight.
To be worrying about what I was missing on social media would be a luxury. Now, what I worried about was whether my sister or I was going to be dissected or not. These thoughts were soon interrupted by Jess observing the map.
"Okay guys. Now past this door are the next two cells holding prisoners." Jess said.
"I suggest we open the door quickly and quietly." whispered Emma.
"Yeah. Duh." Sarah said.
"Duh?" Emma asked now confused.
"Forget it." Sarah said her voice revealing that she was beginning to get annoyed once again with Emma .
I then tried to use the key from the past warehouse that we stole, but it didn't fit into the keyhole.
"How do we get in?" I asked.
"Unfortunately, using my telekinesis would create too much noise, but I do know an alternative way to open this door, though I will require some lock picking tools. Mine got confiscated along with the rest of my belongings when I was kidnapped, but I'm assuming at least one of you is carrying a lock pick kit, yes?" Emma asked completely serious.
"What?" we asked her in unison.
"Oh sorry. I must have left it in our cell." Sarah said sarcastically.
"Why would leave such a valuable item behind?" Emma asked.
"What? No. I was being sarcastic. Do you not know what sarcasm is?" Sarah asked dumbfoundedly.
"I have heard of it." Emma responded.
"Why would we be carrying around a lock pick kit? What do you just carry one around everywhere you go?" Jack asked joining in on the dumbfoundedness of this situation.
"As a matter of fact, I do because I am prepared." Emma replied.
"Oh okay then." Sarah said now phissed.
While they were bickering, I decided to take matters into my own hands. Unlike anyone else, I decided to see if the door was even locked. To our surprise it wasn't, and after a good rubbing in the face to everyone, we all filed in, taking out security cameras as we went through. Weirdly, there were no guards in this one. When we got to the cell containing two more prisoners as marked on our map, I shapeshifted into the previous guard we encountered and pressed my/his thumb onto the finger scanner.
"Alright. I've gotta ask. Do you have a penis Aqua?" asked Jack.
"Jesus Christ!" I shouted.
"Shhhh." Emma said.
"Oh right, sorry Emma. My bad for swearing in front of Sammy." I apologized.
"I was shushing you because you were being loud and you do not need to be sorry. Sammy is much too mature and evolved as a human being to partake in such barbaric language."
"Oh, okay then." I said now wanting to slap her, "And why do you need to know this information?" I asked Jack.
"I'm sorry it's bugging me." he said sheepishly.
"We would also like to know the answer to this question." Jess said speaking for herself and Sarah.
"OKAY THEN! FINE! I've got balls and a dick right now. Alright? Happy?" I whisper shouted.
"A simple yes or no would have worked fine. No need for that barbaric language, Aqua." Jack said grinning.
"Oh my God!" I whispered.
Our conversation was interrupted by the sound of a loud beep and the light on the scanner blinking green. The wall began shaking. I held my breath, hoping that my sister was behind this door, but it wasn't my sister. It wasn't anybody. The cell was completely vacant as was the other one after I opened it as well.
"Give me the map." Emma asked politely.
"It states that there should be a prisoner in each of these cells." Emma said.
"Well obviously there's no one in either one. So where are they?" asked Sarah.
We all started talking at once.
"Maybe they escaped."
"How did they get out?"
"Where did they go?"
Everyone gathered around the map and began pointing out possible places they could have gone to when Sammy spoke for the first time in forever.
"Silence." he shouted and then returned to sticking his ear against the wall.
"Uhh. Emma, what is your brother doing?" Sarah asked.
"Shush." she answered.
"Don't you shush me." said Sarah angrily.
"Shush." Emma replied.
"Shush." Sarah mocked.
"Shush."
"Shush."
"Shush."
"Shush."
"I said be quiet." Sammy repeated.
"Yeah, Emma." Sarah said.
After a few minutes of silently watching Sammy stick his head against a wall, he finally turned towards us.
"I heard seven heartbeats." he said in the same montone as Emma.
"Wait. What do you mean you heard this?" Jess asked quizzically.
"I have enhanced hearing." he replied.
A chorus of "Oh cools" followed this.
"So, did you hear anything else?" I asked.
"Yes, I heard two young male adults yelling and screaming and then only silence."
Horrified expressions emerged on everyone's faces (except for Emma and Sammy's) as we thought about what could have caused this silence.
"Well, what do we do?" I asked.
"Sammy and I will be leaving now." Emma said ushering her brother towards the way we came in.
"Are you kidding me Emma?" asked Sarah.
"You can't just leave. We have to help everybody else get out of here." Jess cried.
"I am no hero." Emma stated firmly.
"Well guess what? Now you will be." Jack said trying to pull Emma back towards us, but Emma shook him off.
"Look, we need you, and whether you like it or not, you need us to get out of here." I said.
Emma looked around at all of us, no doubt trying to determine if what I said was true. Finally her eyes fell onto me. Her poker face showed no emotion whatsoever to reveal what her thoughts were, so I just held her gaze until she was the first to look away.
"Very well then." she sighed, "What is your plan for rescuing the remaining captives?"
The only plan any of us could come up with at the moment was, "Uhhhhhhh."
Our makeshift team had no leader. We all started looking around at each other, waiting for someone to save us. Jess made eye contact with me and raised her eyebrows a bit, asking me if I was going to volunteer. I let out a little scoff at that bad idea. Someone would have to step up to be our leader and that someone would have to be anyone but me. I returned the eyebrows to Jess and she gave me a similar response. It seemed as if everyone was feeling this way. Finally, we all came to an unspoken decision to look at Jack, for he was the oldest or at least looked that way. Jack glared at us, but finally gave in.
"All right. Just stop doing you're eyebrow thing." he pleaded.
"So what do we do?" I repeated.
"Ummm. We split up." he said trying his best to sound confident in his suggestion, "Half of us go to the rest of the cells and the other half go save those two guys who are about to become guinea pigs. It's the only way we'll be able to save them and everyone else."
A cloud of anxiety hovered over us as we realized that Jack was right, and that this might be the last time we all were together alive. I didn't know these people very well, but it was painful to think that any of them could be dead within seconds of our separation. They were too young. We were too young to have to go through any of this. It just wasn't fair. Jess pulled the conversation away from these thoughts.
"Who gets the map?" she asked.
"Is there another one around?" I asked.
From a quick look around we came to the conclusion that there was no security room; therefore, no map in this warehouse. Because none of us wanted to risk going back to a previous warehouse just to look for a piece of paper, we decided that one group would have to go without the map.
"But how will we know where to go?" asked Jess.
"With my enhanced hearing I think I will be able to hear where they went." Sammy proposed.
Because we were desperate we agreed to this.
"So what are the teams?" Sarah bugged.
"Based on my observations, Jess and Sarah work well together because they know each other; therefore, they should be together and I think Sammy should also join them." Emma suggested.
"Are you sure, Emma?" Jack asked.
"Yes."
No one disagreed with her. Suddenly, the same feeling of uneasiness returned to us as we awkwardly stood there not knowing what to say. Finally, someone broke the silence.
"Hey, there's an air duct around the next corner that will take us to the next warehouse a whole lot quicker." Jess said brightening the mood a bit.
"Well that's good. Whose gonna go on that mission?" I asked.
"We'll take the cell rescue mission. You guys take the lab rescue one." Jack said finally following through with his position as our leader.
We walked to the air duct in silence except for Emma who pulled Jess and Sarah to the side. Without trying I ended up eavesdropping on their conversation.
"I expect you to take the best care of my brother. If you do not, I will be forced to come after you and destroy you." Emma threatened.
"If you don't trust us then why didn't you want him on your team?" Sarah asked.
"Because I do not want him to see what I am going to do." Emma answered.
It took me only a minute to figure out what Emma meant. She was going to kill Sharm, and based on what I saw on Stranger Things with Eleven's telekinesis, it was not going to be pretty.
"Guys come on!" Jack shouted.
We joined Jack and Sammy at the air duct. When we reached the vent, we soon realized why it was a short cut. The vent was more of a slide into darkness than the kind you see in movies. Not being fazed by this, Jack had already removed the container and was now sitting on the edge, ready to slide down at any moment. It was then that we said our goodbyes to each other. Sarah, Jess, Jack and I hugged awkwardly while Sammy and Emma talked privately.
"You will be safer with them." Emma said.
"But why can't I go with you?" Sammy cried.
"Because I said so. Now, do not worry. As long as you don't feel then you won't be vulnerable." Emma assured him.
All of the sudden a tear slid down Emma's cheek. She quickly wiped it away and gave him a quick hug. After a few seconds, Emma separated them, even though it seemed that Sammy did not want to.
"Remember. Emotions are weaknesses." she said trying to hold it together and set an example for him, "You will be fine." she said once again in her robot tone.
Emma walked over to the vent and sat down on the edge after Jack slid down. Before disappearing she gave Sammy once last look as if she was trying to memorize every detail of him. His scrawny figure. How his hair was standing up in some spots. His bright green eyes that were similar to her's, surrounded by several freckles. And lastly, his missing two front teeth. She gave one last nod to him and then disappeared. It was just me left. I positioned myself on the duct, similar to what they did. My palms were sweaty and my stomach was in knots. The knuckles on my hands became white from gripping the sides of the vent as I sat on the edge of it uncomfortably. I always hated anything with a drop. I also hated goodbyes. Moving around so much I was forced to say a lot of them, but I didn't want to think about that right now.
Should probably say something meaningful and uplifting.
However, I was never a very uplifting person.
"Good luck." was all I could say before I too got swallowed up by emotion and the blackness of the vent.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
