POV: Emma
The first thing I saw when I walked into the classroom sized space was darkness. Some automatic lights flickered on and I saw a stainless steel table on the far side of the windowless bunker with water, food and medical supplies. On the other side next to the doors were some cots pushed against the concrete wall. Immediately, I grabbed a bottle of water and settled down onto a cot. Even though it was uncomfortable it was still satisfactory to be off my scraped and blistered feet. Of course, my injuries were not nearly as bad as Jack's. In addition to his original wounds he received from our encounter with the Russian Lady, as he referred to her as, he now had shrapnel in his left arm which was from him idiotically protecting me from the countless grenades that had been thrown at us. I had never known one could feel so much hatred for someone else until I met him. His actions made me feel like I was helpless. I didn't need someone to protect me, in fact, I've never needed someone to protect me. To make it worse Jack had even had the audacity to treat me like a damsel in distress afterwards as well: holding branches out of the way for me and standing in front of me so he could guard me from danger. He was the most arrogant person I'd ever met.
I was on the verge of imploding with anger when suddenly the door began to vibrate. Startled, I jolted off up from me seat and concentrated hard on the cot. It lifted off the ground as I readied myself to thrust it at whoever or whatever was outside the door, while Jack ignited his hand on fire. The door finally gave and I hurtled the cot. After which, I realized it was Jess and some other person at the door. They both fell to the floor and missed the cot, which wouldn't have happened if Jess didn't have her enhanced speed. What was more interesting was how Jack's fireball had somehow been extinguished before it had reached them. The answer came to me when I saw the stranger lying on the floor with her hand raised as if she was blocking the fire ball. Instantly, she pulled her hand down and got to her feet, her cheeks changing to a light pink.
"Aqua we got the door opened." Jess yelled out the door, not even fazed by whatever the strange female had done.
Soon after, Aqua trudged in with a small child sleeping on her back. She placed the little girl on a cot and collapsed on the one next to it.
"Thank God!" she sighed, "I don't know how much longer I could have carried her for."
"The point of which you came from is no longer than about ten yards, therefore I do not think that is considered a long distance." I stated.
"That's more than nine isn't it?" she argued, "But also how come in the five minutes I'm not watching her, she manages to go and get a sleeping dart in her shoulder? How do kids do that?"
"Well, we are in forest filled with booby traps." said Jess, "You should be glad it wasn't a bullet that hit her shoulder." she added.
"It's not that, that I'm mainly mad about. I'm mad because that could have been me? I could have been the one who got to be carried. I could have had Mr. Hot Stuff over here carry me. Man! The luck I'm having these past few days." she abruptly stopped talking and sat up from her laying-down position on the bed, "Did I just say all of that out loud?"
Jess nodded while Jack's cheeks turned red for no apparent reason; meanwhile, I was very confused with Aqua's complaints.
"You know what? I don't care. I'm tired as...as...as something that's tired." Aqua mumbled and then collapsed back onto the bed.
"This is Crystal. The one from Antarctica who lives in a castle." Jess said, turning our attention away from Aqua.
"I'm Jack." Jack said as he sat down on his cot with a bottle of water.
"That's Aqua over there and this is Emma." Jess said gesturing to me.
"It's very nice to meet all of you." she said too happily.
"That's Ruby." Aqua said pointing to the unconscious girl with the head of matted hair.
Suddenly, seeing this small child made my heart ache. I had yet to find Sammy and for all I knew, he could be in serious danger or worse. All I was doing was just sitting here. I needed to do something. I rose up and walked over to the door and pulled it open. When I stepped forward something stopped my foot. Frowning, I kicked the open space between the doorway. Some sort of resistance was preventing me from leaving the bunker. The others eventually joined me in attempting to pass through, but none of us succeeded.
In defeat we all took a seat on a cot in silence letting the fact that we couldn't leave sink in. Jess and Jack distributed water and some food to everyone. Crystal doused her bottle of water the minute she got it and was on her third one when Jack broke the peaceful silence we were having.
"Sooooo. What now?"
"I guess we just wait for everybody to arrive." Jess stated as her shoulders sunk and she looked at shoes.
The room went silent again except for the squeaking sound of people adjusting their position on their cots, the crinkling sound of one of Crystal's water bottles and Jess biting into her apple. I was going mad sitting here knowing my only family was still in danger. One of these simpletons needed to distract me. Thankfully, Jack volunteered to once again break the silence.
"I think everyone is a bit curious to know uhh...what it's like up there in Antarctica. How'd you survive from the cold?"
Crystal took a bite from the unpeeled orange in her hand and immediately spit the peel out in disgust. She then answered his question "Since I have the power of the white frost the cold doesn't bother me."
Everybody else grinned, while Crystal and I remained confused about the sudden rise in moral.
"What?" Crystal asked.
"You just said the most famous line in the movie Frozen." Aqua clarified.
"Movie?" Crystal's brow furrowed into even more confusion.
Everyone else stared at her in shock with their mouths hanging open like a bunch of idiots.
"I guess you are from Antarctica." concluded Jess.
"What's the white frost thing you were talking about before?" asked Jack.
"Oh well. My family and some noble's in my tribe have the ability to create and control snow and ice. When I was born I received it from my father..." she faltered.
"Do you really live in a castle like a Disney princess? Oh wait, you don't know what Disney is yet. Oh my God! I will show you Disney and then you and I can become Disney nerd friends and oh my God I'm so excited. You are going to love Disney." Jess exclaimed way to excited to be talking about that putrid company.
"Yes. I did live in a castle." Crystal said now a bit startled by Jess.
Suddenly, after the sound of Princess, castle and Disney, Ruby awakened with a surprising amount of energy.
"Are you really a princess? Was it fun being a princess. Did you have a crown and beautiful dresses?" Ruby asked.
"Uhh. Yes. I am a princess. Yes I had a crown. My dresses were not that beautiful. And no it wasn't fun being a princess." Ruby's smile faded, "I wasn't ever free to do what I wanted to do. I could only speak when spoken to. I couldn't leave my palace. In fact, I couldn't even pick my wedding dress, let alone my husband. So I ran away."
All eyes were on her as the once intrigued mood of the room became replaced with dead silence.
"Well then." said Jack stunned.
"A sloth. I'm as tired as a sloth." Aqua declared.
Just then there was a loud bang at the door.
"Open the door now please!" screamed a voice that was all too familiar.
Jess rushed over to the door, "Sarah is that you?" she asked.
"OPEN THE GODDAMN DOOR! THERE'S AND FREAKING GORILLA OUT HERE!"
"All right." Jess said as she opened the door.
Sarah, a boy who appeared to be about my age, the taller teenage girl we had attempted and failed to save yesterday and Sammy all quickly filed into the now crowded bunker. A loud roar erupted outside the door.
"Harambee is really mad." said the boy I did not recognize.
"Enough with the Harambee stuff!" the taller girl shrieked as they shut the door.
With all the gorilla's might he banged his fists at the building. We could see the imprints he made on the walls. Then, his roaring went silent. All of us sat there as still as statues waiting for something to happen.
"Hello there! No need to worry about the gorilla. He has been taken care of." said Sharm over the intercom, "Congratulations! You have all survived your field test. You will now be brought back to your cells and we will continue our testing there. Have a nice nap." he said as gas began seeping in through the ceiling.
