POV: Jade
My eyes fluttered open as the sun playfully shined on them. As I looked around, all I could see was a dense forest of lush, tropical trees everywhere. I looked down at my waist, legs and arms which were bound to a large, sturdy palm tree by steel bars. Instinctively, I tried to free myself, but of course that was useless. No civilization was in sight therefore, calling for help was irrelevant. Although I was trapped, the scenery was actually quite peaceful and tranquil. The sound of the birds chirping and the rustling of leaves from a gentle breeze blowing through. A sweet aroma of ripe bananas hung in the heavy, humid air. Suddenly I realized that Ruby was not next to me.
"Ruby. Ruby? Ruby where are you?" I shrieked.
"Hello?" called a voice from behind me.
However this voice did not in the slightest bit sound like Ruby's, it was much too boy-going-through-puberty to match her sweet five year old pitch.
Instantaneously, I turned my head around to see the source of the noise, which was in fact a boy in his early adolescence. Unlike me, the boy had no bruises or scratches on his sunburned skin. What he did have was a thick, stainless steel collar with a blinking red light tightly fastened around his neck. His blue eyes had yet to discover this article of clothing however as he observed every detail of the rainforest and me.
"Who are you? he asked timidly.
"Calm down. I'm not going to hurt you. I'm Jade." I answered in my best soothing voice.
"Where are we?"
"I don't know. But let's not panic right now." I said now treating him like my little sister, "Who are you?"
"Billy." he said reluctantly.
"All right Billy, just calm down. Everything is going to be fine." I spoke smoothly, mainly trying to calm myself down.
Suddenly, a voice startled us in the trees above.
"I like the attitude Jade. We haven't gotten a chance to fully meet yet, but if you survive this test we will. Now, moving on, your test is to make it through this dense rainforest. In order to survive, I suggest you try and find a hidden bunker on the southern tip of this island. Have fun." the hidden intercom suggested.
Billy and I looked at each other, "You know who that was?" Billy asked.
I shook my head. Suddenly, Billy's collar stopped blinking. Following that, I felt a rush of energy flow through my veins. Apparently, the collar that I was wearing had stopped blinking as well. Following this the metal bonds around my body retracted into the tree behind me.
Why are we here? How did I get here? Where's Ruby? What is going to prevent us from surviving in this forest?
My troubling questions were then interrupted by the howling of something off in the distance. I then realized what the kinds of obstacles we would be facing here were.
"What was that?" Billy asked, his eyes now widening with fear.
"Let's find that bunker." I said pushing him in the opposite direction.
We fast walked silently through the dense jungle side by side for at least a half an hour. After this I decided we were safe enough away from that creature that it would be okay to break the awkward silence.
"So Billy, how old are you?" I asked not knowing what else to say.
"Fourteen."
"I'm seventeen. Where are you from?"
"Grover Beach, California."
"I'm from Juneau, Alaska."
"Alaska wow. Is it cold up there?"
"You have no idea." I shuttered now being more appreciative of the temperature of the environment we were in now.
"Do you remember anything that happened before you woke up attached to a tree?" I asked.
"I remember being in a car with my brother and flashing lights I think and then I fell asleep. You?"
"I remember this woman with..." my voice drifted off.
Before I could fully answer Billy's question, I heard a rustling sound. I stopped dead in my tracks and did a full head spin to observe the area, but saw nothing. Shrugging my shoulders, I quickened my pace to catch up with Billy who had gone ahead. Quickly, I weaved around tree after tree, but I still couldn't catch up to Billy.
Oh my God! Did I lose him already? Where is he?
Suddenly, I felt something grasp my shoulders and I was thrust upwards before I could even comprehend what was happening. Leaves and twigs brushed past my face as I was launched up a thick tree. Then, I found myself sitting upon a moss covered branch. Across from me was Billy. He motioned for me to be quiet and then pointed towards a large figure prowling through the jungle towards the area that I was just standing in.
Oh God. What is that?
As the creature neared the tree we were in, it became clearer and clearer. My eyes widened as I realized I was looking at a massive, black, leathery gorilla.
"Oh God. It's Harambe." Billy whispered.
"Shut up." I whisper scolded.
We held our breath as it strolled beneath us. The gorilla observed the tree careful not to miss a single detail. It sniffed around for what felt like ages, but eventually gave up and walked away. I breathed out a heavy sigh of relief and leaned against one of the nearby thick branches, adjusting my sitting position. Suddenly, I heard a slight snap and the branch I was leaning on split off from the trunk and plummeted to ground. The loud crash made the gorilla's head spin around, causing him to comb the area even more carefully. Finally, after we sat frozen in time for at least ten minutes, the gorilla continued on it's way through the forest. We watched it disappear through a bush and then we gingerly descended down the trunk.
"How did you get me up there so fa-" I faltered as I felt the heavy, warm breath of something behind us.
We slowly turned around to see a massive, wrinkled, ebony chest. Above this car sized animal rested a watermelon sized head with an enraged frown engraved upon its ape face.
The much larger gorilla bared it's ferocious teeth at us and let out a monstrous roar.
"We should run right?" Billy wavered.
"Yeah." I whispered.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey guys! Sorry for the Harambe thing. I just put that in there for a friend.
Why didn't Billy have any scratches or bruises like the rest of them?
What's Billy's tragic backstory?
Will we know more about Jade's?
How did Billy get Jade up the tree so fast?
None of these questions will be answered in the next chapter, but still tune in for next time.
