POV: Crystal
I put the remaining things into my pack. My goggles to see in blizzards, a canteen of water, some leftover biscuits from lunch, a picture of Pip, my mom and I and the black box my uncle gave me which he called Iphone (I don't know why he thought Iphone was a good name or that naming a box was normal, but I guess that's what it's like in the outside world). As I was grabbing my fur cloak my ice bedroom door opened. It was Pip, my servant.
"My lady, it is time to do your makeup and hair." she frowned as she looked down at my pack, "My lady, I don't mean to get into your private business, but what are you doing?"
I sighed, "I'm running away Pip. I'm going to live with my uncle in the outside world."
"But my lady, what about your father. He needs a successor to the throne."
"I can't do that Pip!"
"But my lady, what about marrying Pahu? He's very handsome and he's the best hunter in our village and he too possess the power of the White Frost."
"I know but...I don't love him. Girls in the outside world don't have to be forced to marry someone they don't love. I have to make my own choices Pip. "
"But the wedding is at sunset. Can't we deal with this later?" she wailed.
"If I stay and marry him, I won't be able to do anything I want to do! I won't be free" I sobbed.
Pip looked at me sadly."You're just like your mother," she said as she stroked my hair and brushed my tears away. "I can't bear to see you caged up here like an animal. I'll help you leave." sighed Pip.
"You will!" I squealed as I wrapped my arms around her for a hug. "Thank you so much." I whispered into her ear.
"You're quite welcome my lady."
"Pip you don't have to call me that."
"You're quite welcome... Princess Crystal," she whispered as a tear slid down her cheek.
"I'm going to miss you so much, even more than father. Oh god! Father! He will be furious! Oh no he'll probably blame it on you." I said running a hand through my hair, "Wait! You can come with me!" I squealed with delight.
"But." stammered Pip.
"Oh, I'm sure my uncle will love you. This is so exciting! Wait. How do we escape without being seen?" I asked.
Pip smiled, "Let me show you something." she walked over to my bookshelf and pulled out a book. She tore out the pages and pulled something out of the spine. It was a map and a key.
"Here is the map of the castle. It shows all the underground tunnels underneath."
"Underground tunnels?" I asked.
"Yes and they will get you far enough away from the castle to escape safely and get to the outside world." said Pip.
"What is the key for and how do we get to these tunnels?" I asked, eyeing the map and key.
Pip walked over to my dresser and pushed one of the knobs in. Suddenly, the sounds of gears turning creaked to life underneath me and the floor next to my dresser slid open to reveal a tiny spiral staircase. I just stood there for a while trying to process the things that had just happened. It was just so unreal and it was all happening so fast. My mind just couldn't comprehend it.
"Are you ready...Princess Crystal?"
"Just call me Crystal, Pip."
"Yes my lady. Oh I did it again didn't I?"
"It's okay Pip, and yes, I am ready to leave my home." I said sadly.
"I'll give you five minutes to take one last look."
"Thanks Pip." I said as I watched her decline down the staircase.
When I couldn't see her anymore, I rushed over to my desk and picked up my quill, tipped it in the dark ink and started writing a letter to my father. After I finished I left it on my desk, I observed my room one last time, taking in the last bits of my childhood of loneliness That occurred here. Like everything in our castle my entire room was composed of ice, which caused it to lack a certain warmth and welcoming feeling. There was my desk, bed, closet, dresser and mirror (all ice except for my fur mattress). No toys, or decorations except for the lanterns hanging from the bear high ceiling. However, the lanterns brought creepy shadows onto my plain, solid walls from their cold light sources of crystals, so there was really no touch of joy in my room. As I was scanning my room I locked eyes on my tiara. Without thinking, I went over to my mirror and placed my tiara on my head. I stood up straight in my ceremonial dress. It was a plain gray dress that poofed out at the bottom a little with a hideous veil that covered my entire face. Like everything else I had no choice and was being forced to wear it. Though, I was pleased with the flowers they had chosen for me. Unlike everything else, my flowers were pretty with dark blue petals and sky blue centers. As I looked at myself in the mirror, I fashioned one of the flowers into my hair.
This is Princess Crystal of North Antarctica. She is quiet, polite, obedient and plain. But not anymore.
And with that I threw my tiara on the ground and it shattered into a million pieces. I tore off my ugly dress and slipped on some leggings and boots and a fur tunic, grabbed my pack and cloak and descended down the stairs to freedom.
The stairs you guessed were ice. Just kidding we're not idiots. They were made out of metal. As we went farther down the staircase it got darker. Pip pulled something out of her pocket. It was some sort of wax thing called a candle. Silence grew between us in the erie underground place, making me feel even more uneasy about my entire decision. Finally, I could not bear the quietness anymore. I had to keep my mind off of things.
"Why aren't you using one of our lanterns?"
"If I took one they would notice. You're father sees everything that happens in the entire village." she answered.
"Oh." I said, thinking back to embarrassing things my father could possibly have heard or seen, "Well, where did you find a candle? We don't allow fire in the castle. Are you trying to melt it?" she didn't respond so I continued asking her questions, "Why would one need a candle here in the castle anyway? We have lanterns for light and no one here needs heat because everyone possesses the power of the white frost."
"This part of the castle won't melt and I don't posses the power of the white frost." Pip replied.
"How do you survive here Pip?" I asked her dumbfoundedly.
"Because of this," she said as a flame appeared in her palm, "The power of fire runs in my family." she said as we continued down the stairs.
I looked at her confused, "Why would my father let your family live here if you possessed the power that is his sole weakness?"
"We didn't live here. We lived in the outside world."
"You're from the outside?" I asked dumbfounded, "Did you have any family there?" I asked.
"I had a husband and two sons."
"Why did you leave them?"
"One day a man came to our house when I was alone with my two boys. He said that by the order of his emperor, I had to come with him. At first I refused, but he told me he would take my oldest son if I didn't go. So I left my family and went with the man. I didn't even have time to tell them why I had to leave."
"Who was the terrible emperor who took you away from your family?" I asked.
"He was...your father."
My jaw dropped as I stood there staring at her.
"Your kingdom didn't have fire and the people of it were dying from the cold. These people were your father's slaves. Your father could not have his slaves dying. Then there wouldn't be anybody to collect the ice for him to sell. So he needed someone to be able to provide them with warmth and light."
"I've never seen him do any of this!" I protested.
"Why do you think he kept you in this castle and never allowed you to leave it?" Pip asked raising an eyebrow.
"To protect me from the dangers outside the castle!" I stammered.
"To protect you from the truth." Pip corrected.
I sank down to my knees against the cold metal wall and buried my face in my hands. She was right.
"Hey, it will be better now. You'll be free living with your uncle." Pip said reassuringly.
"You're right." I said wiping away my tears. I stood up and we continued descending down the stairs.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
