POV: Jess
The vent cover was pushed to the side and we all lowered ourselves silently to the floor. Everyone had a grave, serious look in their eyes, as we carefully crept around a corner. Margot, who had gone ahead to check for possible obstacles, came back and motioned for us to follow her down the corridor, showing to us that it was safe. As we did so, a door with the words EMERGENCY EXIT printed on the sign above it came into to view in a bright neon red color.
Sarah. You have to short circuit the alarms on this door.
Following Margot's orders, Sarah stepped forward and placed her hand on the metal door. A sigh of relief escaped her mouth as if she was finally gaining some of her strength back. Then Margot turned to Sammy.
Sammy. Can you tell us if the coast is clear out there?
Yes.
He put his ear up to the emergency exit door.
There's two stationed at the door.
"Alright. I got this." claimed Aqua, ignoring the link and turning invisible.
The door softly opened, appearing to have done this on its own and then we heard a thud from outside followed by the door closing and Aqua reappearing.
"Clear." she said.
Quietly we walked against the cool walls of the facility in the shadows through the high growing grass, sneaking around the ominously glowing lights on the side of the building and the occasional boulder that would lay in our path. Every time we heard a voice call out that belonged to a distant guard, I froze in terror. From all that I had been put through, my mind was in psychological tatters and could not control itself from making my body panic. However, a summery, gentle breeze cooled my sticky, sweaty face and neck calmed me down a little as I heard it rustle the leaves on the trees as if it was just another regular September night. Or maybe it was an October night or a night in May. I had not the slightest idea how long we had been held captive here. Anyway back to my leaf thing. The leaves rustled like any other night as if no blood would be shed and all would be calm as usual.
However, this feeling soon deteriorated when the once gentle breeze became a wiping wind that violently tore the leaves off their branches, causing them to fall to the ground. The wind blew my hair out of my face and into Aqua's behind me as I realized the calm was gone. Our ride had arrived.
A massive black helicopter landed swiftly onto the ground causing dust, leaves and bugs to be whirled around the open field of knee high grass and animals in the dark deep jungle to howl and squawk in terror. Three men in the same uniforms as the guards in the building leaped out of the aircraft as its blades spun slower and slower. When the three men got closer to Sharm, who was standing in front of his army, they abruptly stood still and saluted him.
Sammy what's he saying?
He said 'At ease.' Then one of the guards said, 'Target L is unconscious and ready to be taken in.' Followed by Sharm saying, 'Excellent! Bring her in at once' And the guard said, 'Just give us five minutes.'
Is that it?
Yeah.
Okay. Well you guys stay here for a minute. I'll be be right back. Don't let anyone see you.
As Margot was saying this in the link she began creeping back towards the door.
Wait! Where are you going?
I have to get something. I promise I'll be back. Stay put.
Then she disappeared back into the facility.
Well this blows.
"She's probably returning to the facility to obtain some sort of weapon to destroy us or alert some guards that we have escaped. How do we know this isn't another test?" asked Emma, who was now speaking out loud because since Margot was farther away the link would be distorted.
We all fell silent.
"Rebellion!" Billy whispered dorkingly (I declare that that is a word now. Deal with it), raising his hand in a fist slightly.
"What?" asked Emma.
"Screw Margot. We can come up with our own plant and kick all of these guy's asses. We just have to work..."
"Don't you dare say together, because I. Work. Alone." growled Emma.
"I wasn't going to say that." Billy replied clearly lying.
"What were you going to say?" Emma asked glaring at him.
Billy continued to stare back at her until he finally said, "I. I was going to say work together." he said shamefully looking down at the the ground.
"What if Margot is coming back and actually is helping us." Sammy asked, now chiming in.
"What have I told you before?" asked Emma.
"Don't trust anyone." he replied softly bowing his head.
"You're the one who left him with us." I exclaimed.
"That's because it was the most logical decision." she retorted.
"My god." Sarah said narrowing her eyes at Emma.
"Alright guys, obviously Margot didn't realize that this was a sucky hiding spot, so let's just go hide somewhere before we get caught." said Aqua trying to calm us down.
"Where do we go?" cried Crystal.
"We should go into the forest. It will give us enough cover to come up with a plan." Jack suggested.
"We can't possibly go back into that death trap. Let's head for the bushes near the back of the helicopter." Sarah suggested.
"The bushes? No. That's too risky." Jade argued.
"Well, where do you suggest we go?" Sarah asked frustratedly.
"Your butt."
"Shut up Billy!" we all shouted way too loudly.
"Did you hear something?" a guard shouted off in the distance as our faces paled with fear.
"I think it came from over there." another one responded.
"To the bushes?" I asked.
We all nodded in agreement for the first time that day and began crawling over the damp grass towards the nearest plant for cover. After doing this a couple of times, successfully not being seen, we made it right behind the chopper. Both side doors were left open and I could see just the slightest wisp of brown hair. The vehicle didn't look as if it could fit all of us, but it was worth a shot. Gingerly, we all peeked through the brush to observe the scene. Fifty guards at least stood at attention, surrounding the front side of the helicopter. Each guard was equipped with his or her own mk47 from what it looked like.
"On my count we take out all of the guards and take the helicopter." said Jack"
"What? No! Not yet!" I whispered speaking for everybody because we were not in any condition to fight.
"One. Two." Jack continued.
"Stop right there." said a voice from behind.
We spun around to see twenty guards pointing their guns straight at us.
"Put your hands where I can see them and no messing around!" yelled the guard who said stop.
We all readied ourselves to disobey her orders. As if she had read our minds she grabbed Ruby by the arm and placed the barrel on her forehead.
"Put her down!" shrieked Jade lunging at her.
The woman didn't even flinch as she easily knocked Jade to the ground with a kick to Jade's stomach.
To teach us even more about discipline the guard barked, "Obey my orders or I'll blow your little sister's tiny brains out."
Ashamed, we placed our hands on our heads and let them put the life draining collars back on us with the power inhibitors turned on.
"Well. Well. Well. Look who's here. It's Mission Impossible." Sharm coed, trying to sound cool but failing because halfway to us his wheelchair got caught in the overgrown brush.
"Do you require some assistance?" Crystal asked genuinely concerned about his well being.
"NO I DO NOT!" he shrieked finally reaching us, "Anyways." he said now calmer, "I'm going to have to kill you now, you realize that don't you? Gotta' teach Ivy over there what happens when someone disobeys me.
Aqua's head shot up.
"Yes. Yes. Your sister is here. She snuck out of our grasp for a bit but we retrieved her. Unfortunately, you won't be seeing her ever again, though." he chuckled, "Rocko! Line em' up!" he shouted.
"Wait." said Sarah putting her hands in the stop position.
"Ugh. What now? Are you going to bore us with some meaningful speech about how it's been great knowing all of your new friends." Sharm groaned.
"What? No! I was going to say how it seems like there should have been an evil laugh there." she said stalling time.
"Yeah." we all chimed in.
"Oh for the love of God! Can you just hold your annoying comments and shut up and let me execute you! This isn't some stupid comedy movie or book."
"Book? If this were to be a book I would prefer it to be turned into a movie." said Sarah.
"Really? But the books are so much better." argued Aqua.
"I know but there would be so much action in this book that I feel like it would be better as a movie. Plus, there's no reading in a movie. Except for subtitles. Damn those subtitles." Sarah said shaking her head.
"But in Austin Powers 3 they had hilarious subtitles." I pointed out.
"Alright while you have your pointless conversation Rocko here is going to be putting bullets in your heads." said Sharm exasperatedly.
That stopped all chatter. The guards behind us herded our reluctant bodies from behind the bush to the center of the clearing where there was a gravel path that led directly to the aircraft. We were then told to kneel in a horizontal line and be quiet. The massive, muscular Rocko pulled out a pistol from his belt and cocked it.
"Wait! Rocko, I would like to do it myself." said Sharm snatching the gun from Rocko.
He calmly rode up and down our line of misfits as if he was not sure on who to kill first. Sometimes he would turn around midway through the line, making a grinding noise beneath his wheels.
"Wha...what is that?" asked Crystal observing the gun as if it were an undiscovered flower.
Sharm did a full three sixty and rode ride up to her face.
"Well Crystal," he said pointing the gun at her head, "this is a pistol or to be more general, a gun. Once I pull this," he explained pointing at the trigger, "a piece of metal called a bullet will come out of this hole right here and be shot into your brain and kill you. Would you like a demonstration?"
"No...no. Please." she quivered looking away, her eyes brimming with tears.
"Save your breath." he growled forcing her head to face the barrel, "You have all failed and now you are going to have to pay the price."
Crystal's eyes turned to look at me one last time, praying for mercy, but mercy was never given to her. I looked away sharply as I heard the bang rupture my eardrums.
