POV: Jess
I shut my eyes and waited for my demise to follow Crystal's, but it never did. When I sneaked a little peek, I saw shock plastered onto Sharm's once cocky and merciless face. Slowly, I turned to look in the direction he was looking in. It was Crystal, in the flesh, breathing and alive. The bullet that was shot at her head was now frozen in mid air, its metal body barely brushing the surface of her flawless forehead.
"But...but...how did you?" Sharm's eyes narrowed and his head turned around to see Margot with an unfamiliar adolescent boy leaning on her shoulder for support.
He had a short, tamed Mohawk and was roughly six feet tall with tremendous muscles that even caused Rocko to become a bit anxious. What drew my attention was his dark hand that for some reason was outstretched towards Crystal as if he was causing the bullet to be frozen in place. When he let his arm fall to his side, I heard the slightest clink and looked back at Crystal. The bullet was now lost in the overgrown grass.
"Margot! A...are you betraying me?" He asked clenching his hands into fists.
"No. I'm just giving these kids a grand tour of our wonderful and perfectly legal science facility." she replied sarcastically.
"How could you. You even tried to kiss me."
"I was leaning past you to get a drink from the water fountain."
"What? No. That's not what happened. You know what I think. I think that you're just upset because I didn't want to kiss you and so you pretended that the reason that you leaned in was to get a drink from the water fountain."
"What?" Margot said outraged by his reasoning.
"Umm. What do we do? Do we try to escape" I whispered to Sarah.
"I don't know. This is pretty funny." she chuckled.
"Oh don't go thinking I am some sort of perv. I was going to report you for that because that is just not appropriate for the workplace." shrieked Sharm.
"That's not appropriate! You put me in a uniform that was two sizes too tight in some places!" Margot fired back, "You know what? I am done with this conversation." she screamed frustratedly.
"Fine. how did you get them out of their cells?" he asked changing the subject.
"You granted me full access."
"Damn. Well, live and learn."
"It's all right. We all make mistakes sometimes." said Ruby, completely unaware of the entire situation we were in.
"Thank you small person. Well, I guess it's time to kill you all then...again." he sighed, his annoyed attitude returning.
He then snapped his fingers and his army unleashed their deadly arsenal of bullets onto us. I threw myself to the ground, burying my face in the tall vegetation, yet I still felt no pain.
How could they keep missing us?
Then, my eyes drifted towards the strange guy standing next to Margot, who had fallen deep into conversation, changing the bullets courses.
I sat there helplessly flinching and covering our faces with our hands.
"Come on!" said Jack pulling me out of my state of fright.
He hustled us out of harm's way behind the helicopter. Half of the guards began pursuing us while the other half continued to fire at Margot and her new friend. Jack thrust open the sliding door of our shelter and grabbed the first weapon he could find. Luckily, he had a great shot and managed to thin the enemy out a bit, while Emma flung herself into the cockpit and attempted to start it. Instead of hearing the sounds of an engine whirring to life, we just saw Emma for the first time ever appearing to be confused.
"What are you doing?" Sarah shouted.
"The helicopter requires a specific key card to start it, which I do not have." she replied.
"Shit!" Aqua cursed.
"We have to get Margot." I concluded.
We began moving around the nose of the helicopter to return back to Margot when another stream of bullets whizzed by our heads, causing us to drop to the ground again.
"Margot will have to wait. We have to get to safety first." Jack yelled.
Another loud chain of ammo came in contact with the helicopter, making a horrible metallic scraping sound.
"Get the girl and let's run for the forest." Jack said.
"I am not taking orders from you." Emma said.
"You will if I'm the one holding the gun!" he responded.
This for the moment silenced Emma.
"I can't hold them off for much longer so we're going to have to make a run for it." Jack went on.
"Or, you could just shoot better." Sarah yelled back.
"Are you always this bitchy?" he asked her.
"Pretty much." she yelled back.
"Good to know. When I count to three, run for the woods."
"One. Two..."
The word "Three" didn't even leave his mouth before I took off running. The whole gang followed out of peer pressure. I glanced back to see Jack running backwards yelling barbarically as he fired randomly into the horde of guards we had attracted. When I turned forward, Aqua, who was holding Ivy, Jade, Ruby, Sammy, Emma, Sarah, Crystal had all flung themselves over a rock for protection. Billy, before leaping over the rock, suddenly stopped in his tracks. My eyes followed his hollow gaze to see Jack fall to the grass. I met his eyes to make sure that he wasn't about to do what I thought he was going to do. For a second everything blurred. The countless rounds of bullets faded off and so did the tree line and even my sister. All that was left was Billy who with his eyes said a final goodbye to me. When everything finally came back into focus I tried to reach for Billy, but he slipped past me and ran towards his fallen brother. The enemy was nearly upon him when he reached Jack. With great difficulty he was able to get Jack to his feet, however; by that time they were surrounded. I stood in horror, forgetting how to move. Just as the guards released their fingers from the triggers, a loud screech erupted from Billy's mouth. Instinctively, I pulled my hands to my ears and collapsed to the ground into a ball. My freak out moment was later interrupted by Sarah pulling me to my feet and guiding me over the rock as Billy helped Jack stumble towards us. We were now on the other side of our protective barrier facing the rainforest of doom. The air was heavy with humidity as usual and you could hear the wild shrieks of the inhabitants of it panicking to one another about the loud commotion and Billy's scream that had awoken them from their slumber. Cautiously, we all peaked above the moss covered, slippery rock that was the only thing protecting us from being impaled by a bullet. The oh so brave protectors of Sharm were now lying on the floor covering their ears as I had previously done. Gradually, our attention was drawn away from the pile of pansies towards Jack's now rosewood red colored leg.
"What do we do?" asked Jade.
"We have to keep moving." groaned Jack.
"You're not in the best condition to be moving around right now." stated Crystal.
"Then you're going to have to..." Jack started but was interrupted by Billy.
"We aren't leaving you behind." he shouted tears brimming in his eyes, "You're going to be fine."
"What!? I wasn't going to say leave me. I am perfectly capable of running with a hole in my leg." he said taking his shirt off.
In reaction to this Jade and Emma rolled their eyes and Crystal seemed to be much more interested in the exotic bird a few branches above her head. Unlike these three and Ruby who was cuddling against her sister, Aqua, Sarah and I stared at Jack's caramel, perfect tan and his brawny abs and biceps. Billy, catching my drool, then removed his shirt to reveal his pale and scrawny belly.
"Here you can use my shirt." he said flexing his "muscles" and handing it to Jack who had already begun turning his own shirt into a makeshift bandage.
"Thanks." he said using it to wipe the sweat off of his forehead and then handing it back to Billy, who then defeated, picked up his shirt with the tips of his fingers to avoid touching the disgusting sweat of Jack and dropped it onto the ground next to himself.
"What are we going to do?" Jade cried snapping my attention away from the hotness, "Our only way to get out of this hell hole is back over there. Also Margot and that kid can't hold out much longer and they saved us. We have to go back for them."
None of us said anything for a while. We knew we couldn't leave them behind, but it seemed just about impossible to save them, let alone save ourselves.
"Ummm is no one addressing the fact that Billy just ruptured everyone's eardrums?" asked Aqua.
"But how could that even be possible?" asked Emma You're wearing your power inhibitor collar. Unless... It's not functioning!" she said talking to herself and doing some mental math from what it looked like in her head, "Billy, can you produce that screech at the same decibel or a higher one again?"
"You mean yell louder?" he asked.
"Yes, I mean yelling louder." she said in a mocking tone.
"No. I can't. It takes a lot of energy to do that. I'm pretty surprised I was able to do in the first place with all the tests those scientists did to me."
"Maybe you could try your other thing." Jack suggested.
Billy narrowed his eyes at Jack.
"What other thing?" Aqua asked.
"This is life or death Billy. There's no time to be shy." Jack argued pressuring his brother.
Billy let out a sigh and then grabbed at the bandage on his back. He then started peeling it off; however he started making little whimpering noises as he was doing so, therefore causing himself even more pain.
Jack, who had had enough, ripped the band-aid off, making Billy let out a normal human yelp.
"Why did you make us watch this..." I drifted off as I saw what the rest of us saw underneath Billy's bandage.
Attached to his back were two extraordinary hazel brown, feathery wings. They drooped to his sides in the midnight darkness.
"Oh this feels so good." he sighed with relief, "They put that giant band air over my wings when I was in my cell so I couldn't use them. That's why I have the bandage." he explained as if that was the most confusing part of this situation.
This soon dawned on to him that we were still very startled by his show and tell item.
"Oh come on! Margot can talk to us with her mind and you guys can't get over the fact that I have wings?" he said, raising an eyebrow.
Aqua was the first to recover after a grueling long silence. "I swear to God if you change your name to Fang I will kill you." she threatened.
"Why the name Fang?" he asked.
"We are not talking about that!" Aqua cried.
"Are you similar to Angel from X-men?" questioned Emma.
"I guess?" Billy said, a bit uncertain.
"Never mind that. Can you fly or not?" Jade asked getting to the point.
"Hang on." he said stretching his wings out.
He began taking deep breathes and bounced on his feet, until finally he took a leap and shot up towards the trees. It was incredible. Until he fell right back down to the ground, covering himself in leaves and dirt.
"The collar must be numbing your wings." Emma concluded as if she was an expert on knowing everything about us and our kidnappers as well.
"Uhh. Just a slight heads up. The guards are slowly getting up now." warned Jack from his spot against the rock.
"This sucks!" Sarah complained as she thrust her hands to her sides.
Suddenly, a bit of color returned to her sickly pale face as she stood up a bit taller. The collars, in addition to inhibiting our powers, also weakened us in general, but for a glimpse, Sarah seemed a bit better. I must have imagined it because after I blinked, her face was as pale as before and her shoulders were still hunched over from exhaustion like the rest of us.
"We should keep moving." suggested Emma.
"I'm not going any farther into that forest. Who knows what traps he's got hidden in there waiting to jump out at us. Not to mention that the only way we were successful enough to beat those obstacles was because we had our powers and in this case we don't even have those. Plus...it's dark." I added sheepishly.
"You're afraid of the dark?" Aqua asked grinning.
"Shut up!" I retorted.
This conversation eventually got drowned out by the sound of something crackling. I turned to see Sarah thrusting her hand to the ground. Each time I could hear the slightest crack of electric energy until after several tries she was able to muster a small bolt of good ole electric love.
That sounded weird but I wanted to make a reference in that sentence and that song just happened to pop into my head so I'm just going to take this shit to my grave and go with it. Pretty soon Sarah was clenching a marble sized ball of...galvanism which is a synonym for electricity (Your welcome I didn't use electric love.) Did I even use that correctly? Whatever. Continuing...
She held the brilliant ball of energy up for everybody to see.
"Hey! Look at that !" she yelped in amazement.
"Holy shit." said Aqua.
"Does this mean all of them are inactive?" Emma inquired to herself.
The rest of us tried this and had some luck. Crystal could freeze the grass she was standing upon. I could create a force field the size of a football. Aqua could move water droplets around on a leaf. Sarah could create tiny balls of electricity. Emma was able to move a pebble. Jade and Ruby remained powerless; however, I wasn't even sure if they had powers to begin with. Billy was useless. Jack and his hot abs had the energy to hold a small flame on his palm. Sammy also was still powerless and could hear like an average human. My attention returned back to my sister. When the electric ball in Sarah's hand grew to become the size of a golf ball, that's when I saw a puff of smoke erupt from her collar and then her collar split in half, clattering to the rainforest floor.
"Dope." said Billy nodding his head ever so slightly.
"What just happened?" asked Jade.
"Her collar fell off." I said in disbelief.
"No shit Sherlock." Sarah said.
"What did you do to make the collar fall off?" Jade asked.
"She had to grow some balls." said Billy.
"Shut up Billy!" we all shouted in unison.
"How did you do that?" Jade repeated.
"I don't know? I just kept trying to make a bigger ball of energy." Sarah answered shrugging my shoulders.
"Does this mean you can turn off our collars." asked Jess.
"Perhaps if she produces a big enough electrical current into the collar it will destroy the collar." Emma said now understanding that she needed to put her explanations into simplest terms for us to understand.
"Here. Try it on mine." volunteered Aqua, who desperately wanted to remove her collar like the rest of us.
Sarah rested her hand on the shitty piece of metal wrapped around Aqua's neck.
"I'm not sure if I'll shock you." Sarah said.
"Just do it." pressured Aqua.
Sarah took a deep breathe in and then let all of her air flow out of her lungs. There was a loud pop like the kind you would hear when a circuit blew and then Aqua was on the floor unconscious.
"Oh shit!" we said in unison.
Suddenly, I heard something stirring behind me. I turned around to see a girl slowly standing up while rubbing her head. She had brown eyes and dark brown wavy hair that reached the middle of her back unlike her blue eyed, dirty blonde haired sister. Ivy, I assumed, seemed to be a couple years younger than I and had no recollection of how she had gotten here. I deduced this fact with my special detective skills.
"Where am I?" she asked.
My great detective skills as you can see.
"Who are you?" she asked, "Where's my fami..." she didn't even finish her sentence before she saw Aqua laying on the ground, her body alive but very still.
"Aqua? Aqua!" cried Ivy pushing past us to get to her sister.
Jade kneeled down and checked for her pulse on her wrist.
"She's fine. Just knocked out. On the plus side, it worked." she said holding up the collar triumphantly for everyone to see.
"What did you do to my sister?" she cried, pulling her sister's motionless body away from us.
"Look we don't have a lot of time before they find us, so I will just summarize it for you. We all have been kidnapped and brought to this strange and evil island by a guy in a wheelchair named Dr. Sharm. We have been here for months being studied and tortured and forced to wear these collars that prevent us from using our powers, but you just arrived today because Sharm said that you escaped or something when one of his goons was kidnapping you. One of the guards at this place, though, is a double agent and came here to help us escape, which is currently what we are in the middle of." I explained.
She looked around at us all with a massive amount of confusion on her face, "You're telling me that you guys are freaks like her?" she asked.
"Freaks?" Sarah asked now offended, speaking for all of us.
"Do you not have any abilities?" asked Crystal.
"Of course not." Ivy quickly responded, now disgusted at the idea of having powers.
"Whatever. So Sarah," I said pointing to Sarah, "can produce electricity and we have just discovered that she is able to overcome her power inhibitor collar and deactivate it. So we thought that she could do it to other people and Aqua was the first to test this." I finished.
"Yeah sorry about that. Maybe I should try a little less voltage." Sarah said.
"You electrocuted my sister?" Ivy asked angrily.
"Electrocuted is a strong word." Sarah said, "Speaking of which, who would like to try next?"
"Billy wants to try it next." Jack said volunteering his brother.
"What?! No!" Billy objected.
"You'll get your collar off?" mocked Jack.
"Alright fine." Billy said changing his mind and walking over towards Sarah, "On the count of three. One," he said closing his eyes and biting his lower lip, "Two..."
In a lighting speed second (I know another bad pun.) Sarah had released a smaller current into his body. He immediately collapsed onto the ground.
"Ughhhhhh. I'm gonna feel that one tomorrow." he groaned rolling onto his side, Did it work?" he moaned while sitting up, "Is it weird that I can't feel my left arm right now and why is my leg wet?"
I scrunched up my face after his last question.
"It worked." Jack breathed, still in shock like the rest of us that at least one of us was able to overpower our collars
"Awesome." Billy said letting his muscles go dead, causing himself to fall back over.
Sarah turned back to everyone, "Who's next?"
