They opened fire. But not at me. Some walkers. Daryl quickly shoved me across with my bag to the next house’s garden. We stopped and I held the wall. I held my breath, then turned and looked cautiously to the sides of me. I breathed in hard afterwards and laughed a bit. I stopped then wiped my forehead from sweat.
“Sorry. Next time I’ll tell you when I plan to give myself up.”
“That way I can stop you from doin’ something stupid?”
“I don’t do this very often.”
“No shi**. Come on.” He jerked his chin forwards and I went along. If I was gonna be a part of this group, I’d have to get over being scared all the time. We stopped at the edge and saw the Governor go across the street to a house further away from us.
“Any ideas?” I asked.
“Yeah. Live.”
I smiled. “I meant how.”
“We wait a bit until they either cool down or just leave.”
“But, what if that doesn’t happen?”
Daryl looked at me. “You got somethin’ in mind Wonder girl?”
“Look at that truck. It has a bag on the end, unguarded. That’s obviously ammunition. Unguarded. If worse comes to worse, and the bags still unguarded, I could make a run for it and you could go to the motorcycle. If they catch me, at least you’ll get away.”
“Sounds even more desperate than you’re other plan. Stupider too.”
I looked at him and then away. “Saving your life isn’t stupid.”
“Whatever.” He said in a bit of an angry tone.
I waited for a second while Daryl was planning what to do. Then I saw the Governor get out of the bar with cases of liquor. “Whenever I get the chance, I’m gonna kill that jerk.”
“Not if I get to him first.” Daryl replied. “You never told us why you’re not with him and his little group a soldiers.”
I smiled. “And give up living in a tree house?”
We both shared a scoff and I looked at him. “Cuz he’s a freak and a murderer. The bad kind.” I waited a second. “Why aren’t you with him?”
“Not where I belong.”
“Not where, you wanna be.”
Daryl just looked to the ground, then out to the street again.
“You never answered my question. Because you’re a good person, or because you don’t trust me?”
Daryl was silent for a second, then shrugged a bit. “Didn’t trust you I guess.”
“You still don’t think I belong?”
“You belong wherever you feel right. No use lookin’ to others to make you feel welcome.”
I nodded to his logic and he just looked at me. He squinted back to the truck and I sighed. “It’s now or never.”
