Connecting with readers could be the most important thing you could do. I personally like it when i can say ( in a teen-fiction or something ), 'oh yeah, that might happen to me' or ' i love that Tv show as well!' its really simple yet effective. Having a character that is interested in the same things the reader is, is good be because it shows the reader the character isn't ALL made up and it just makes the reader feel nice inside really.
