Going into the plot TOO fast..

This is a capital NO for many people including me. First of all, I'm going to talk about going into the plot..

1) Readers want to get into the juicy details and want to be interested in a story. But it's impossible when your introduction is five chapters long. No one wants a prolonged chapter describing everyone and everything for a few chapters without even the START of the plot. It's good to have description but if your explaining everything you do without even putting something juicy in the middle, it turns people off.

Like I said before, people like to get into the juicy details, to be engaged in a book quickly. But they also want to connect with the character. So if your writing a book and the introduction is 1 paragraph saying..

'Hi, my name is Claire Park. I have blonde hair and green eyes and I'm afraid of spiders and the dark. My dads a teacher and my mum is dead, but she died when I was born. My fathers re-marrying and I hate the step-devil named 'Sarah Linguini'. She has these two daughters called 'Mary' and 'Madeline' and this really hot son called ' Marcus ' I think im falling in love with him which is bad because soon he'll be my brother!'

It's an okay plot line (I'm okay with you stealing it) but you ruin it when you say it all in once. What will the story be, just a description of the story summary you did. AS A INTRODUCTION!?

It's stupid and one of my biggest pet peeves.

Tip.

Don't add everything all at once. You want to REVEAL this information THROUGHOUT the book, not just at the start. Instead of giving facts about the characters appearance, try and use sentences like..

My blonde hair flapped around my face as I did my best, in my unfit shape, to speed walk to school because the monster I have to call my step-mum couldn't be bothered to drive me to school this morning.

It reveals information slow enough, and also gives description. I can admit my writing isn't that good, but I thought that up in two seconds whilst normally I'd write it up with more time and thought.
