"Immortality isn't living forever, it's watching everyone you've ever loved grow old and die."
As he sat on the window ledge, gazing out over the bright neon lights of a city far below, Oscar gazed up at the moon. It had taken a lot to find an area untouched by urbanisation in this century, but he needed it. The harsh lights always bothered him; the sounds, smells, they were all magnified by his heightened senses and drove the vampire mad. He snapped his fingers and the simple sound system he'd rigged here began to play a familiar and mournful tune from his childhood, from hundreds of years ago; Castlevania's Bloody Tears. As the piano chords drifted through the small and sparsely furnished room, his fingers moved with the notes, he still remembered. A sad chuckle, he'd never forget, he knew that. There were some skills you never lost, some things that were ingrained in your muscle memory for life... no matter how long that life was to be.
How long had it been exactly? How many centuries had it been since he'd given up on relationships?
He remembered each funeral, every grave. Graves long since built over. Graves he could no longer visit
His parents.
Jon.
Adam.
So many sweethearts
More loved ones than he could list, it'd take him another century to try.
As he gazed up at the moon, hanging silent and serenely in the inky sky, silent tears began to slide down his face. The pain never went away, he didn't expect it ever would. A slender hand went to his chest, he still breathed out of habit, to make himself feel more human, but the lack of pulse... he hated it. He despised it. He was an idiot, helping that man, he should've just called an ambulance or just kept moving. If he'd only been more heartless none of this would've happened. He'd be with them again by now.
He wouldn't be so alone...
Immortality isn't living forever, it's watching everyone you've ever loved grow old and die.
