THE CAR HORN brings me out of my daydream.
I stop staring pointlessly staring at myself in the mirror and apply my lipstick before grabbing my handbag and rushing downstairs and after telling my parents I was going out with Felipe.
He told me he'd be here at 6 p.m.
It was exactly 6 p.m.
Inside the car he reached over and opened the door, I sit inside and put my hands in my lap after fastening my seatbelt.
"You look beautiful," Felipe says and I smile.
"Thank you," I reply.
Felipe and I had been going out for three months. He was on time, he never let me down, we never fought, he always complimented me, he was handsome. All my friends were jealous of my catch, and I couldn't blame them, Felipe really was something.
He was secure, comfortable. I knew that nothing could go wrong with Felipe, he wasn't the person who would ever betray me. Felipe was everything that my parents wanted for me, he treated me right and I really did like him. He helped my mother whenever he was here, and talked sports with my father. They loved him.
"I just hope it doesn't rain," Felipe says, looking up at the sky through the windscreen.
The word rain never fails to bring memory back to me.
"Fuck Lud, I'm so sorry," Federico apologises stumbling into the now empty cafe.
His hair was wet from the rain that was pouring down outside. His clothes clung to his skin -which was a plain striped shirt and jeans- which only made his muscles stand out. He was biting his bottom lip hard as he waited for my reply. I simply wrap my hands around the warm to-go cup of cappuccino on the wooden table.
Did I yell at him? He was two hours late, it was two a.m and my eyelids felt heavy.
Did I forgive him and run into his soaking wet arms and let him hug me and whisper that its okay?
I take another sip of my drink staying silent.
"Say something," Federico urges.
"What do you want me to say?" I ask, my voice thin. He winces.
"That its okay? That you forgive me?" Federico asks.
"Is it okay?" I ask him trying very hard to keep my voice steady.
It wasn't the first time he'd done this. The amount of times I've had to forgive him for being late is countless. I wish I was more important to him more important to him that he'd remember that he had a date with me.
"No, not really," Federico says in defeat, and I nod.
Federico glanced at me, and instantly looked away. It was probably because I was glaring at him, but at the same time i was talking with my eyes, i wanted him to give me a good reason to forgive him and act like this never happened, like I always did.
Sometimes when he was late, i was just really scared to find out his reason for being late. Was he with somebody more important? A girl?
The reason I usually forgave him is because of the times when he was on time and we'd have a lovely date and I would get a warm feeling and just feel like I was floating. Because on the other hand, Federico was such a romantic. He gave me this weird feeling.
"So, you're not going to say anything?" I ask him, and he keeps looking at the table like it was talking to him.
"Well then, i better be going," I get up, my chair scraping the floor extremely loudly.
