John's POV
I heard the door open and light flooded the room. My eyes widened, realizing that Dave didn't have his glasses on.
"Bro !" I heard Dave yell. He closed eyes and covered them with his arm to block out the light. I wondered if the light had caused him to be in pain, even if only for a second. I wasn't exactly sure how light sensitivity with eyes worked. I felt kind of bad honestly, I mean, I was the one who asked him to take off his glasses.
"Dave, why didn't you have your glasses on ?"
"Because we were sitting in the dark, so I didn't need them." His brother looked confused for a second, then his faced relaxed as if he understood. Did he forget about the light sensitivity thing ? No, they were talking about him not having his sunglasses on. Then why did he seem confused ? Ah, whatever.
"Well, I'll be in my room."
"Bye," Dave said as he felt around for his glasses. I grabbed them and handed them to him.
"Here," I said.
"Oh, thanks." He took the glasses and had his eyes squeezed shut while he put them on.
"Does light hurt, or what exactly happens ?"
"Um, well depending on the amount of light, it can make my eyes feel like they're burning and stinging. If it's not that much it, uh, just makes my eyes water..." he said, sounding almost unsure.
"Are you okay right now ?"
"Yeah I'm good. I covered my eyes fast enough so they're fine."
"Good." I wondered how he took a shower with his glasses on, or maybe he just showered in the dark. I didn't want to ask because that would probably be really weird.

On Halloween, we watched movies like The Corpse Bride and other not-scary but Halloween-ish movies, since I couldn't handle horror movies or anything too scary. When it started getting dark, we got dressed into our costumes and laughed at each others lameness. Dave literally just draped a white sheet over himself and made holes near the ears so he could wear his sunglasses on the outside.
"That's so lame," I laughed.
"I'm being ironic."
"Suuure."
"You're dressed up as a character from Ghostbusters. That's pretty lame."
"Watch it, I have a machine that traps ghosts, and I don't think you want to end up in there."
"You're such a nerd."
"I know," I smiled. "Wait, did we coincidentally wear somewhat corresponding outfits ?"
"Oh look, more irony has joined the party. Fantastic."
"Whatever. Let's go get candy !" I opened the door, and we walked off into the neighborhood.

After trick-or-treating, we dumped our candy onto the floor and looked at what we got. We picked through, grabbing the ones we liked and laughed at the ones left in the middle. Things like bags of pretzels, some sort of off-brand sour fruit gummies, and even some sort of Bible story booklet. The pretzels weren't that bad but the other two were just sad. We stayed up way past the time I liked to be asleep, but I didn't care because I was here with Dave, and that seemed much more appealing.

Monday morning, my alarm clock woke me me, screaming at me to get up. I got out of bed and did what I had to do in the bathroom, and as I walked out into the living room/kitchen area, I almost had a heart attack. I had completely forgotten that Dave was sleeping on my couch. Since I usually get up really early, I decided to let him sleep a bit more. I made some cereal for breakfast and sat at the dining table while I ate. I heard some sort of alarm going off, and then it shut off after a few seconds. Dave walked into the kitchen with his shades on and his hair ruffled from sleeping. He turned around to face me.
"Yo, where are the bowls ?"
"The bowls are in the cabinet to the left of the fridge, and there's cereal in the pantry."
"Thanks, bro."
"Mhm." I finished eating my cereal and put my bowl and spoon in the dishwasher. I sat with Dave at the dining table and then waited for him to get ready to leave. We walked out of my house and headed off to school.

After school, I met Dave at our regular meeting place and we walked to his house together. My day consisted of learning, taking a quiz and a test, Rose wiggling her eyebrows at me at lunch when Dave wasn't paying attention, and doing a ton of work. When we got to Dave's house, we started working immediately and when we were done for the day, we decided to just talk instead of playing video games like we usually do.
"So what's new in your life, Egbert ?" Dave questioned.
"Meh, nothing much. I've just been going to school and hanging out with you."
"How interesting."
"Ah shut up, I'm sure your life is boring, too."
"Of course it is." I rolled my eyes at him.
"How's school treating you ?"
"Like shit. There's only three classes I really like."
"Which ones ?"
"Lunch, free period, and history."
"You like history ?"
"Shit man, yeah. It's the only class I'm actually good at."
"My best class is science."
"I'm terrible at science. Honestly, why do we have to know how many fucking valence electrons Rhodium has ? It's pointless."
"Why do we have to learn about dead people ?" I countered.
"Well we gotta know what's happened in our past and see what led to things being as fucked up as they are."
"But it's confusing ! There's so many people and dates and wars and battles. How the heck do you remember everything ?"
"See, for me, everything makes up a story that just sucks me right in. It all lays out as if it's a bedtime story and I find everything fascinating. I don't know, it just makes sense to me."
"Well geez. I wish I could say science does that for me, but honestly, I just find it interesting."
We continued talking about this and that until I had to go home for dinner. As I tried to fall asleep, my mind was flooded with thoughts of Dave and I noticed just how stuck I was over him.

> Author's Note
Hello Brotatoes. I'm sorry this is over a week late, but I got sick as heck and haven't been doing much of anything. I'm about to fall asleep on my keyboard thanks to the cold medicine I'm taking, so I'm sorry if there are any typos; I'll fix them when I can actually keep my eyes open xD Anyway, I hope you're enjoying this story and I'll talk to you in the next chapter !
