I woke up at 4:45 and hopped in the shower. When I got out I blow dried my hair and put it in a pony tail. I put on my Adidas joggers, the sweatshirt Lucas gave me, and a nike hat. I couldn't find my basketball shoes so I just put on my nike's. I kept my makeup simple, I had to look more like a boy than a girl. I sent Lucas a picture of what I was wearing and he sent me one of his outfit. He was wearing a scarf from his mom. He looked so funny.
I finished getting ready and went downstairs. Haley made pancakes this morning. My mom already left for work and Adam was sitting at the island drinking coffee.
"How's the house hunting going?" I ask.
"We found a few places to look at, but we're taking a break." She said.
"So does this mean you guys will get married?" I ask.
Haley widened her eyes.
"Someday after we graduate." Adam nods and sips his coffee.
"Right, someday." Haley went back to cooking.
She put down my plate and I thanked her. I ate my pancakes and went on my phone. I had about five minutes until Tay got here.
"So, I saw you and Lucas in the back yard pretty close, you were both leaning in. Did you kiss?" Haley asked.
"No, I backed away." I said.
"That dropped his confidence by at least twenty percent." Adam said.
"He seemed fine." I say.
"I was also a seventeen year old guy, too. A girl backing away from a kiss hurts, unless you've already kissed then it's not too bad." Adam said.
"It couldn't have been so bad, right? I told him that we would be friends at least until after homecoming." I said.
"You are breaking his confidence. I don't think he'll have any left by the time homecoming comes around." Adam said.
"He's the star football player, he has loads of confidence." I say.
"I was a star baseball player, trust me we have feelings too." He said.
"Right, I'll apologize later." I say.
"Then he'll think you're giving him permission to kiss you and he'll do it again!" Adam said.
"I'll figure something out." I said and saw Tay pull up.
"Bye." Haley said.
"Bye, I'll see you later." I say and walk out.
I got in the car and buckled up.
"Guess who came over yesterday?" I ask.
"Lucas?" Tay asked and pulled out.
"Yeah, guess what almost happened?" I ask.
"You almost kissed while he was teaching you how to throw a football but you backed away." Tay said.
"How'd you know?" I ask.
"Lucas told Gavin and then Gavin told me." Taylor said.
"Oh." I say.
"Nice sweatshirt by the way." She winked.
"Oh my god." I roll my eyes.
"You gave him the sweater, Gavin told me that too." Tay laughed.
"Well, why couldn't you come over?" I asked.
"I went to Gavin's to pick up clothes for today. I'll have you know we kissed and I didn't back away." She said.
"What else do you know?" I ask.
"It really hurt Lucas and he really wanted to kiss you but he respects that you don't want to date." She said.
"Then maybe I'll give him a makeup kiss." I smirk.
"Really?" She asked.
"Probably not." I sigh.
We pulled into the parking lot and waited. We were ten minutes early.
"I think you two should kiss." Taylor said.
"I'm not all about that peer pressure life." I say.
"It's not peer pressure, it best friend pressure. There's a difference." She said.
"Then talk to me as my best friend, not those people who ship everyone." I say.
"Alright, so not as a fan girl, as your best friend I will tell you what I think. I honestly think that you two are both very nice and attractive people. You're both smart and athletic. I think that you two would, not only be cute, but perfect for each other. Once you two started talking as friends is when I really saw it. Ever since then I've been trying to get you two together as soon as possible." She said.
"So mentally and emotionally you think we'd be good together?" I ask.
"Of course, not to mention y'all are too cute." She laughed.
"Alright well we should go in." I say and grab my bags.
We were walking up.
"Gavin and I were talking and we think that once you two start dating then you should drive to school together." Taylor said.
"We could get married and I'd still want to drive to work with you." I say.
"That's unlikely." She said.
"Yeah, I'd drive myself. Anyways, I would still drive with you." I say.
"I figured as much." Taylor said and held the door open for me.
We opened our lockers and I put my stuff in it. I grabbed my phone and we began walking around. Everyone looked super funny wearing the opposite gender's clothes. I saw Lucas talking to all of his friends. If any of his friends had longer hair they were in a small braid. Tay and I were laughing at their group of friends. Someone patted Lucas's chest to get his attention. The guy pointed in our direction and Lucas waved to me. Tay and I walked over. Gavin and Taylor grabbed each other's hand and I awkwardly stood there.
"I'll hold your hand." A boy said, he apparently noticed that I was looking at their hands.
"I'm fine." I awkwardly said.
"Then hold Lucas's." He smirked.
"I'll pass on that too. I actually need to talk to Lucas, alone." I say.
I guided Lucas over to an empty corner of the commons.
"You look handsome." Lucas laughed.
"Thanks, bro." I jokingly reply.
"Don't call me bro, I am a women." He said.
"You sound like a feminist." I giggle.
"Ok, but really what is it?" He asked.
"I wanted to apologize." I whisper.
"For what?" He asked.
I looked around to make sure no one was listening, "For backing away."
"Oh, right." Lucas frowned.
"It's just that my mind was going a thousand beats per second and I've never kissed someone before and my mind traveled to volleyball." I said.
"It's fine, don't sweat it." He said.
"I also wanted to tell you something that might make up for backing away." I smile.
"What's that?" He chuckled.
"I would be dating you right now if it wasn't for volleyball. I really like you and I'm truly thinking about it." I sigh and look down.
"Hey," He lifted up my chin, "It's fine. I really like you, too. That's all we need to know, right? I like you, you like me. We can just stay friends and ignore our feelings until you're ready because when you are, I'll be ready."
"Awe, thanks." I smile.
"Anything for you." Lucas smiled.
"So that sweater fits you nice." I laugh.
"Yeah, it's a little snug. This scarf is really itchy." He said.
"Beauty hurts." I nod.
"No kidding." He rolled his eyes.
"This sweatshirt is comfy." I laugh.
"Yeah, it's more comfortable than this scarf." Lucas laughed.
"We should go back before they start getting suspicious." I point my thumb behind me.
We walked back to everyone and they looked at us.
"We were all watching you, by the way." Jason said coolly.
Cassie walked up and grabbed Jason's hand.
"Hey." He smiled.
"Hi." She smiled back.
"You went from smug to a sweetheart for Cassie." Gavin said.
"Yeah, we were all watching that." Lucas mocked.
Jason rolled his eyes.
First bell rang and we all went to our first hours.
"Good morning class." Ms. Penn smiled.
Everyone repeated good morning in a dull tone.
"Every hour your teachers were given a subject to talk about homecoming." She said.
There was silence.
"I, as the health teacher, am talking about being safe." She smiled.
Everyone groaned.
"As you all know there are after parties. At your age there are males and females at these said parties. I do not want one of you girls coming into school pregnant and said it was at an after party. I will still support you, but I will be disappointed. Now, I was each of you to take one of these." She said and passed around a box.
Condoms, who didn't see that coming?
There was a series of 'boos' and 'gross' across the room.
"Now, as for health. You all should not be participating in drugs or alcohol." She said.
I picked up a condom and set it on my desk, giving it a gross look as if it could see me . I handed the box to Lucas and he casually sat it down. Casually. Had he used one before? Were condoms just a normal and casual appearance in his life? Had his parents giving him some after they gave him the talk? After I got the talk I got a box of pads and a box of tampons and my mom told me to pick which ones I preferred.
Ms. Penn continued to talk and no one was listening. I leaned over to Lucas.
"Do you want mine?" I whispered and held up the condom.
"I don't even want mine." He whispered.
"Well, I don't plan on booking up with someone and if they do I'm not supplying the protection so here." I whisper and try and hand him the package.
He silently fought back and forth until I had the condoms.
"Let's give them to Gavin and Taylor, it's likely to happen soon." I whisper to him.
Lucas nodded and I wrote on a sticky note 'you'll need it ;)' I set the note on their desks, which were behind Lucas and I, then placed the condoms next to the notes. Next to our notes were Cassie and Jason's.
"Everyone thinks it will, apparently." I whisper.
"Shut up." She whispered.
The day went by fast and volleyball was even quicker. We won all three games, as always. I couldn't wait to get home, though.
