It was Monday and the last bell had rang. I rushed to my locker and unlocked it. Right as it opened someone slammed it shut.
"What do you want?" I ask angrily at the person who slammed it.
"Lunch with you." Lucas says.
"Look, it's still no. I don't know if you've noticed but it's still volleyball season, so no. Besides, if you want to get a girl don't slam her locker shut when she's rushing somewhere." I say and open it again.
"Shark week?" Lucas asked.
I knew he meant period, but I wouldn't admit he was true.
"That is my personal business, and I just got told that coach won't be here today and that Olive won't be there to set up nets, so I have to hurry up and get there. I also have to run practice because I'm team captain." I say and grab the binders I need tonight.
"Ooh, I'm team captain for football." Lucas said.
"Does it look like I care right now?" I say and close my locker.
"Not really, actually." He said and started to follow me into the gym.
"Don't you have somewhere to be?" I ask and open the door.
"It's pouring and thundering outside so football is indoors today." Lucas says.
"How can you even practice indoors?" I ask.
"Conditioning." Lucas says.
"Fun." I say sarcastically.
"Anyways, because of the rain only volleyball and football are practicing. Also, the principle told me to give you this." He handed me a letter.
"Dear Samantha Holmes, due to rain the football coach will also not be attending practice. You are to work with Lucas Clark on conditioning in the gymnasium. Have fun!" I read the letter out loud.
"He means that the football and volleyball team will be conditioning together." He said with a cocky smile.
"Haha, no." I say in a sarcastic tone.
"We have to work together to plan a practice and stuff. So, you meet out in the gym with your team in ten minutes." Lucas says and walks away.
I rolled my eyes and walked into the locker room.
"As you all know, coach won't be here today. Also, to make matters worse, there will be no actual volleyball today. The football team is practicing indoors, they're conditioning. The principle told us to condition with them. Trust me, I have a note, this was not my decision." I said and everyone groaned.
I put on my black spandex with a pink band and my black sports bra with a pink band. Everyone was wearing sports bras, spandex, and tennis shoes. My hair was in a high ponytail with a black headband. I grabbed my water bottle and headed out with the rest of the team.
"Girls, go start doing dynamics. I'll meet up with you guys in a second." I called out and walked up to Lucas.
The rest of the football team was staring at all the girls stretching. I waved to catch their attention then made a movement as to say 'Go back to work'
"Why are you all wearing sports bra's and spandex in front of a football team?" Lucas asked.
"This is what we always wear to conditioning you idiot." I say.
"It'll distract the boys." Lucas says.
"Yeah? Well it might come surprising but shirtless guys with abs can be quite distracting." I say.
"Well, still..." Lucas mumbled.
"Whatever. What are you guys doing first?" I ask and roll my eyes.
"We stretch then run ten laps around the gym." Lucas said.
"Alright we'll do it with you guys." I say and walk back to the girls to do dynamics.
"So when the guys are done scratching we're doing ten laps." I say.
Everyone nodded and went to sit down. We do conditioning every Thursday, so this is easy for us.
Lucas gave me a thumbs up and I guided the team over to the football team. Everyone started running but eventually it turned into a race between Lucas and I. I was jogging next to Lucas and we both started speeding up. Now I'm sprinting as fast as I could around the gym, Lucas was right next to me. I was on the ninth lap and I finished five feet before him.
"I win." I say in between breaths.
"I let you." Lucas said.
"Then why are you breathing so hard and just chugged a whole water?" I ask.
He didn't answer and we waited to the rest of the people to be done.
"Half of the football team follow Jason to the North gym at the other side of the school please." Lucas said.
Jason was the 'vice president' of team captains. It's just in case Lucas was absent.
"Girls 30 squats, please." I say, which Lucas had his team do as well.
When I finished and so did everyone else I told everyone to do a two minute plank.
"Does anyone need water?" Lucas asked.
Everyone nodded and went to get a drink of water.
We conditioned for another hour and then told everyone that we would call it early. Taylor, Lucas, Jason, and I waited to make sure all the sophomores had a ride. I was standing by the door waiting for one last sophomore to leave.
"Are you two dating?" Jason asked.
I spun around.
"Of course not, that'd be terrible. Do you know how distracted I'd be in games?" I said in a 'duh' tone.
"So you like him you just don't want to have a boyfriend during the season?" Jason asked.
"What, did he set you up to ask me these questions? Anyways, if I had never talked to him I'd say that it'd be ok dating him. Not now, though. Besides, I'm not a cheerleader." I say and turned back around.
"That's only Gavin and Jackson that go by the cheerleader law." Jason said.
"I've been going on dates with Gavin." Taylor said.
"I figured he didn't care. You have to make sure that Jackson doesn't know you're dating someone other that a cheerleader during the season." Lucas said.
"Hannah, do you want us to drop you off at home?" Taylor asked Hannah, who was the last girl without a ride.
"No, this is entertaining." Hannah said.
"It's also awkward." I say.
Taylor, Hannah, and I decided to leave. Lucas opened the door for everyone and I was the last one out.
"If not lunch, then a movie?" Lucas asked.
"That actually sounds great. Only if, we were sitting in different seats, watching a different movie, and on a different day. You would pay, though." I say sarcastically and run out into the rain.
