CHAPTER 10
"Hey wait up a sec!"
I turned around to see Dennis chasing after me. I stopped and waited for him to catch up to me. "Hey what's up?" I asked.
"I need to talk to you about something," he said.
"Okay what is it?"
"You might not want to talk about it, but I think we need to."
I shifted, worried a little. "Okay..."
"We need to talk about us."
"Us?" I asked, shaking a little. "What do you mean talk about us? There hasn't been an us in over five years."
"Exactly, I need to tell you how I feel. I know you think that I didn't remember you when we met again at the beginning of the summer, but I did. I just didn't want to get involved in your life again. You had built up a whole new life since the last time I had seen you and I didn't want to mess it all up for you. But I miss you Allison. God, I never stopped missing you. You've been on my mind for all these years, you're the reason I made all the decisions I've made since I left."
"Dennis," I said.
"No, please let me finish. I wanted to come back for you, but I was scared. Scared of hurting you, scared of getting hurt, and I was scared of what would happen if I did come back. I didn't want to have to face you."
"Dennis," I said, a bit louder than last time.
He came closer to me, and I backed away slowly. "I don't want to hurt you again. We could make it work this time."
"Dennis. Trust me on this I've missed you, and I've thought about what it would be like if something like this happened. But I just can't do that. I'm with Ben now, Ben the guy who fixed me when I was broken. The guys who I would never want to hurt. We could always be friends again, but I'm not going to throw a relationship that I've been in for two years, and everything else that I've worked to get just for you. It just doesn't work that way."
"You can't just come back into my life after I rebuild it and expect me to give up everything to be with you again," I watched as his face fell.
"Allison please give me another chance," he said quietly.
"Like I said, as a friend I will, but not as a boyfriend. I can't do that to Ben, and I can't do that to myself." And with that, I took off running towards the bus. I didn't want to hear anymore.
