"Life is an awful, ugly place to not have a best friend."

-Sarah Dessen, Someone Like You

Chapter 8

"What are you doing?" I asked Tyler. I just handed someone his muffin and he was sitting in a table next to Tyler and I saw that he was staring at a blank page on his laptop.

He groaned and placed his face in his hands "Gramps is forcing me to make a letter to one of his business partners"

"Businessman in the making" I teased as I went back to the counter.

He looked at me with a lazy smile "I could use some help"

I chuckled at him "I would love to help you but we have customers" I said motioning to a bunch of people who just entered. I doubt I can help him either, I wouldn't even know what to put in it.

He pouted before continuing to pout at the screen. I decided to focus on work. Tyler is a smart guy, I'm sure he could do it.

I gave Tyler a quick glance after handing a customer a piece of cake, I saw that he was already typing away on his laptop.

I don't know what it is about today but there were a lot of people out, which is why we hardly got any breaks. Dina was in the counter while Steve and I were making drinks as fast as we could.

By four in the afternoon, the crowd lessened. Thank God.

"I'm drained" Steve complained, leaning on the counter.

Dina and I just nodded our heads in agreement. Today was probably the busiest that I've experienced. Well, at least I've made it through without any accidents. No spilled coffee, no broken plates. Phew!

"I'm also done!" Tyler announced coming up to us on the counter.

"How'd the letter go?" I washed my hands since I got some whipped cream on it earlier.

"I think it went well. And if Gramps doesn't like it, he can just write another letter himself"

His phone rang before I could respond. He answered it and his eyebrows scrunched together "Dude, I can't understand you. Talk slower"

After a few seconds, his eyes widen "What?! What happened?" I don't even know who he was talking to or what they were talking about, but I'm beginning to worry to.

"Alright, we'll be there" he ended the call and grabbed my hand.

"Hey! Where are we going?" I demanded. I still had a few hours of work.

"Hospital. Joey and Cole got into an accident" He said as he dragged me to his car.

I think my heart stopped for a second. I know I don't know what happened or how severe it was but I tend to think about the worst case scenario. I freed my hand form Tyler's grip and ran to the passenger side of his car.

The drive to the hospital was quite. I wasn't in the mood to talk. I was worried sick about Joey. Tyler seemed to notice because he tried to assure me Joey and Cole are alright. But I wasn't having it, not until I see them in one piece.

We went straight to a receptionist and she told us that they just moved Joey to a room. She gave us the room number and we ran there.

I didn't bother knocking and just went in. Joey was unconscious and Cole was speaking to a doctor.

"What happened?" I asked going to Joey's side. She had a bandage on her forehead and a sling on her right arm.

"It was a T-bone accident. The guy was on his fucking phone" Cole explained to me and Tyler as the doctor left. Cole had a bandage on his forehead too, but other than that he seemed okay.
