Quick in and out. That's how it always was. Truthfully, Percy had never done this before, but there was just something off about his neighbors. They seemed a little too caring and talked about kids way too much for a couple who never had any. Talked about a certain kid like it was their own. The only issue was that Percy had never seen a child come out of that house. He'd never even seen the shadow of one in the window. Not to mention that the way they talked about it was just...off.He pried open the window and slipped inside. About an hour until the couple would return. Percy intended to find answers before they did.
Fredrick Chase and his wife, Percy didn't really know her name, he found pictures of them everywhere. But not one picture of a child. Curious.
Wondering room to room he found more pictures along with everyday items that would be in anyone's house until Percy reached the kitchen.
Opening the fridge there were the normal items, various fruits and veggies, leftovers, and a few dairy products. The first few cabinets were normal, chips and cereal along with a few packs of cookies. However, the last cabinet was packed with baby food of various brands and flavors.
Percy opened one the the cabinets under the counter to find the trash can, filled with opened but full and sloppy baby food jars along with paper towels blotted with, was that blood?
More than anything, this made Percy want to find out what was going on. He checked the rest of the rooms eventually making his way to the basement door. He opened it and crept down the steps, only to stop when he heard rattling and shuffling coming from the dark basement. He closed the door behind him and felt the wall, unable to find a light switch, he switched on the flashlight on his phone. It was better than nothing.
He made his way down the rest of the steps, keeping the light aimed on the steps in front of him to avoid tripping. Percy paused at each step as each creaked, causing more shuffling to come from the other end of the basement. Reaching the bottom, Percy aimed the light at the far wall.
The beam resulted in the clattering of chains as a body tried to move away. Percy rushed forward and removed the fabric from the blonde girl's mouth, allowing her to speak.
"Please, help me." She spoke in a raspy voice. The girl was dressed in tattered, dirty clothes and was covered in dried blood. Despite this, Percy was drawn to her stormy gray eyes that sparkled with hope.
"What's your name?" Percy asked, starting to undo the chains and rope holding the girl to the wall behind her. He felt like he needed to keep her talking and awake.
"Annabeth. Yours?" She spoke, conserving words.
"Percy."
"Nice...name." Annabeth choked out. By this time, Percy had finished untieing her and she was free. He helped her to her feet only to catch the frail girl.
"How 'bout I just carry you." Percy mustered a chuckle as she practically fell into his arms.
"Hurry, they'll be back soon." Annabeth told him, her voice stronger and urgent.
Percy nodded and raced up the stairs, flung open the door and raced down the hall to the kitchen, only to be confronted by Mr. and Mrs. Chase.
"Who are you, and why do you have our daughter?" Mr. Chase roared.
Percy carefully sat Annabeth on her feet to lean against the wall of the kitchen. The couple in front of him were too focused on his face to notice Annabeth slip a large butcher knife into his hand while she took the phone off the hook and started to dial the familiar three digit number that was drilled into every child's head.
"911 what is your emergency?" A woman's voice came through the receiver.
Annabeth brought the phone to her ear. The whole scene seemed to happen in slow motion. "I need help, my parents are trying to kill me." She spoke into the phone. Her voice shook but was strong.
After the sentence registered with Mr. Chase, he screamed and charged Percy to get to the phone. In his distraction, Mrs. Chase lunged for Annabeth who was still too weak to keep her balance and collapsed onto the floor, dropping the phone.
"984 Limestone Road!" Annabeth screamed into the phone before Mrs. Chase viciously grabbed it and slammed it into the wall, breaking it into millions of pieces.
"Bad children get punished. Fredrick, get rid of the boy we have to leave." She growled, pulling Annabeth by her feet towards the basement door.
Percy, however, was nothing if not a survivor. He swung the knife, cutting into the stomach of the older man. Mr. Chase fell to the ground, holding his stomach. Percy plowed into Mrs. Chase and sent her rolling into the bedroom which he locked her inside of.
Annabeth was in worse shape. Her cuts and wounds had reopened from the dragging and in the process of knocking her to the floor, Mrs. Chase has made a sickly looking bruise that was creeping up her left side. Percy dropped to the floor beside her and leaned his back against the wall, pulling her onto his lap.
"You are gonna be okay. I'm not letting you die on me." He told her, because if Percy Jackson was anything other than a survivor, he was stubborn.
They rested there for a moment before the police broke open the door and their shouts rang through the halls and rooms. Sirens were blaring outside as two officers, guns in hand, walked through the home. The first found Mr. Chase, unconscious from the blood loss and called in paramedics. The second rounded the corner to find Percy holding Annabeth in his arms. Both of them caked in blood.
Annabeth was taken out on a stretcher and Percy walked beside her. No one tried to stop him as he hopped up into the ambulance with her and went to the hospital.
The police arrested the Chases and returned to the hospital to question both Percy and Annabeth who hadn't left each other's side. After they left and Percy's mother insisted that she would let Annabeth stay with them, Annabeth turned to get a good look at Percy.
"Your eyes look like seaweed." She said softly.
"Well aren't you a little wise girl?" He laughed. Suddenly Annabeth launched herself up to kiss him and let's just say they never let eachother go after that.
