Percy sat on a chair he had pulled over next to Annabeth. His chin rested on his hands and his brows were knit in concentration. Until Cass returned, the only thing he could do is keep Annabeth's wounds from picking up any more dirt. So he held bandages made of water on her wounds. They also helped with the bleeding, but that only worked if Percy was completely focused.
Out of all the scrapes on her body, the one on her head worried Percy. It looked like a cross between a bite mark and a knife. Whatever did it must have been pretty big.
"Percy, I need to tell you something." Cass spoke, walking into the cave chamber.
"Where were you? That trip was longer than it should have been." Percy responded, not breaking his focus.
Cass fingers the strap on her bag nervously. Percy was always opposed to everything that connected him to that camp. She had no idea how he would react to seeing Clarisse and Will.
"That was our fault." Clarisse spoke.
Percy froze. His water bandages dropped, his task completely forgotten at the sound of the familiar voice. He stood, slightly shaking. But Cass realized it wasn't just him that was shaking. Earthquake. She guessed he could do this earlier, after all his father is called Earthshaker. But Cass had never seen him do it. She took a step back out of fear. Clarisse and Will did as well. Although, Will kept looking at Annabeth, almost like he wanted to help but knew Percy wouldn't let him close right now.
"Why are you here?" Percy finally spoke. His voice was low but threatening. "I owe you nothing."
"Percy," Will started, "we need your help. The gods have promised their return if we can make this world livable again."
"What you never killed Kronos?" He sneered.
"No, Kronos was destroyed by the rage of Hades. The one we face now is Gaea." Clarisse answers.
"Percy, just hear them out." Cass calmed.
"You brought them here."
"Percy, they followed me-" Cass cut herself off at the sudden contact. Percy wrapped her arms around her. She froze, not really knowing how to react.
"Thank you." He whispered and pulled away.
Will took the invitation to surge forward and start treating Annabeth.
"What's wrong with her?" Percy asked after a moment.
"Just a little undernourished. She'll be fine in about a day." He answered, dripping some nectar down Annabeth's throat.
Percy turned back to Clarisse, "why did you come to find me?"
"We told you." She answered.
"What you told me was vague, even by the gods standards. You would have to be pretty desperate to come find me."
"After the camp was destroyed, we moved to an old military base about three miles away." She paused.
"And? I knew all of this and it doesn't explain why you are here."
"The monsters found us. They chased us out. But before they did, we received a message from the gods. They promised their return if we could retake Camp Half-Blood. To do that, we need you. You are our last hope." Clarisse answered.
"Why do you need me? You have plenty of demigods."
"You are the most powerful demigod we have ever seen."
"What about that son of Zeus from the Roman camp. Didn't you guys combine the camps? Ask him to help."
"Jason was killed. All of the Romans were. We were too late to save them. The monsters killed them when they took our camp." Will answered.
"Percy, please come back with us." Clarisse begged.
Cass eyed Percy, waiting for his answer. After a moment a single word slipped past his clenched jaw, "no."
