Mornings like these tended to make a calm sort of feeling in everyone. A closeness that lingered in the shared anticipation of rain soon to fall. And Annabeth kinda liked it. She sat outside on a metal chair attached to a table made of the same black painted metal, cold from the previous night's air and the mist that clung to the world. Soft sounds of keyboard clicks were muted even more by the mist as she typed.
The weekend for most was a time to catch up on work, or just relax, Annabeth was working ahead. Three weeks ahead that is. On an essay due right before midterms, which were four weeks away.
Percy saw her as he got closer to the building, one of the residence halls on campus. She always seemed to be out here in the mornings. Always typing, ignoring the world. He could never ignore her though. Everyday he took a walk, hoping to catch an opening to talk to her. Or catch her eye as he walked past. Today was his chance.
On the pavement next to her chair, a set of keys lay on the ground; Annabeth's keys, forgotten in her concentration.
Percy smiled, walking up and picking up the keys, handing them to her. Annabeth's attention reluctantly broke away from the computer screen and she gave him a vaguely dazed look before realizing it was her keys he was handing her.
"Oh, thank you." she smiled, taking the keys.
"Yeah, no problem." Percy said, returning her smile. He brushed his hands nervously on his jeans then asked, "So you're out here every morning, why is that?"
Annabeth stopped typing and looked up at him skeptically. "Typing out essays, getting ahead at work. Trying to pass all my college classes online." Her hand fiddled with her mask on the table next to her, uncertain if she should put it on. He was standing closer than six feet, but he also didn't have a mask on so it didn't seem like he cared too much if she did.
Percy saw her fiddling, "Oh, sorry! Do you want me to put mine on?" he reached into his pocket and pulled his mask out.
Annabeth paused. "Uh, no that's ok. We've already kinda broken the six feet thing."
"Yeah," Percy chuckled nervously, "I guess so." He motioned towards the seat across from Annabeth. "Do you mind if I sit?"
She shook her head, "Not at all."
"I'm Percy by the way," he said, sitting down.
"Annabeth," She responded, closing her laptop. Company was a little more interesting than an essay. "What's your major?"
"Marine Bio and Ocean Science." Percy answered. "I really like the water."
Annabeth smiled. "That sounds cool. Mine is Architectural Engineering."
"They have engineering here?"
"Yeah, it's not the best program but I'm planning on getting a lot of transfer credits from here, to keep things a little cheaper." Annabeth answered. "The bio department seems big though."
Percy smiled, "Yeah it is, good too." He paused. "Hey, so, this might sound a little forward, but do you want to maybe grab a milkshake with me sometime? This one place on campus has pretty good ones."
Annabeth slipped her laptop into her bag, "How about now?"
Percy smiled, "sounds good."
They carried on in conversation as they walked. The sun rising but not burning off the mist. Annabeth found a nicer use of her morning than writing, talking to Percy made her smile more than she had in awhile. Percy just couldn't believe that she had agreed to come with him. The smart girl he had seen working every morning looked amazing when she smiled, and he found himself falling for her over a misty morning milkshake.
