It was a dark night on Olympus. The gods were angry. Thunder boomed, rain pounded, the sea raged and shook the earth, and the moon didn't even cast its light. Zeus against Poseidon, Athena, and Artemis. At the center of the fight was Percy, Annabeth, and the late Thalia.
It was an accident. No one was meant to be hurt. And no one was meant to die. It was a simple thing. Just lunch with friends to catch up. Annabeth had planned it. Percy had invited Thalia. No one expected the monsters. A dozen arai.
The trio fled. Killing three of the monsters, they sported the effects. Fatigue affected Percy, extreme hunger ripped apart Annabeth's stomach, and, unknown to her, Thalia's arrows and bow waited to betray her. A curse from a monster Thalia sent to Tartarus three days before.
They ran towards the boundary of camp. The arai moved to block them. Percy and Annabeth made it through, their weapons sending two of three back to the dark depths. They crossed the border. Only ending up with a kick me sign, and a chipped dagger blade.
Thalia notched an arrow. She aimed but she missed. The arrow embedded itself in the tree. Purposely missing the monster. The other arrows disappeared, her bow melting in her grip.
Annabeth screamed Thalia's name. Percy held her back. Thalia just screamed. The rest was ugly.
Percy and Annabeth cried for days. As did the hunters and Artemis herself. Zeus didn't cry. He bowed his head while on his throne. He harbored his anger. He let it fester and grow.
It grew as he watched Poseidon and Athena go about their immortal lives. Not even caring. In his eyes this only confirmed his thoughts. Percy and Annabeth were responsible. Without them, Thalia would still be alive. Without them, he would be happy.
Angered, Zeus commanded Poseidon and Athena to punish their children. They refused. His anger grew. When Artemis heard of his anger, she spoke to him. Attempting to explain the accident. Her plan failed. Instead, Zeus' anger grew. He waged war against the three other gods.
Tonight was one of the battles in the war. The sky raged with the sea over a frightened camp. Even the camps protection from the weather couldn't stop the storm.
Percy and Annabeth huddled together in Cabin 3. Muffling each other's sobbs brought on by the prolonged reminder from the war raging above them.
"Percy, do you think it's our fault?" Annabeth asked, her throat burning from crying.
"No it was an accident. Artemis said so herself. So did your mom. Athena is never wrong." Percy comforted. Although, the storm outside seemed to argue his words.
Annabeth stood and walked towards the window. She looked past the rain beating against the glass and up to the sky. Closing her eyes she silently pleaded for Zeus to see reason. To stop this war and end the storm.
As if in answer, the storm relaxed. Easing as the gods at war started to tire. But Zeus was not going to quite that easily. He had a dastardly plan. As a last act of vengeance he sent his bolt down on the camp below. It struck its mark. The cabin housing two demigods. The two demigods who he held responsible.
The normally calm, salty scented, cabin went up in flames. The rest of the camp woke at the sound of crackling fire. Annabeth launched herself towards the door. But she was too late. Percy wasn't. He dived outside. Looking back he wouldn't have dreamed of saving himself had he known where Annabeth was. As for her, she was trapped. There was no hope of escape as she lay on the burning floor of the cabin, her eyes closed by the smoke. Her body smoldering.
The Ares campers had to hold him back. When Percy realized where she was. His screams woke those that the fire did not. They continued. A terrible sound of love nearly lost.
The screams didn't stop until a nettle made it. Percy slumped in the grass, but not from the medication, from defeat. It shocked the campers holding him back.
In the sky Zeus scowled, his plan only half finished. But Athena carried a storm of her own. By killing her prized daughter, Zeus had insulted the goddess. And she did not take insults lightly. But something stopped her, a reaction far greater than her own.
Percy regained his strength. In a desperate act, he surged forward out of the grip of the other campers. He charged into the cabin.
The campers held their breath. Praying for him to emerge. The prayers ended when they had to run in fear of the swelling water. A wave that towered over the cabins, crashed into the blaze. The destruction was devastating.
The two demigods were never found.
