The ocean beat against the shore, the light fading quickly from the sky. They sat on the sand, just out of reach of the water, close enough to feel the heat off of each other. She sat there smiling and watching the water. He did too, and they could both feel each other watching them out of the corners of their eyes. Both waiting for someone to speak.
"It's nice out here." Annabeth finally said, the smile playing on her voice. Her heart was nearly beating out of her chest as she thought of the thing she wanted so much to happen.
"Yeah, but it was hot today." Percy responded. He was calm, watching the water and the moon rise, enjoying her company. She envied him for being so calm.
She gave a light laugh and he smiled wider at making her happy. They leaned towards each other and their shoulders bumped, the contact making them both want to be closer. Until Annabeth leaned her head on his shoulder. "Is this okay?" she asked.
"Yeah." Percy answered and moved his arm around her shoulders. "Is this?" He wasn't quite sure where she was going with this. But he trusted her, they were basically best friends at this point. Him, her, and Grover; the Three Amigos.
She nodded. They sat that way for a while, watching the waves roll and the moon rise.
"Anything you want to do?" she asked, hoping for a certain answer.
"Stay here forever." he answered. "With you." Percy smiled at her, squeezing her shoulders.
Annabeth's heart ached. The answer wasn't what she was hoping for but something she knew she would get and it made her love him even more each time.
"I love you." she said, hoping he would understand what she meant. What those words actually meant for her.
"I love you, too." He answered.
"No," Annabeth said. "I mean it. I love you, more than anything and I need to know if you feel the same way."
Percy stayed silent for a while. He looked at her but in the low light some features blended in and neither could get a good look at the other's face. He wished he could, she was almost glad he couldn't. "I love you," Percy said. "I mean it."
Annabeth looked back at the water. "Do you?" her voice was small. "We've avoided labeling everything for so long, used excuses."
He didn't respond.
"I know that it's a lot, and you might not know, but I need to." she told him.
They watched the water for a while, both thinking about what was said and wondering who would be brave enough to suggest what they were both thinking. It's what Annabeth wanted to happen so bad, and now Percy wanted it too.
"Kiss me."
"What?"
"Kiss me. Then we will know."
