“Gosh, I hate take-outs…” Nate groans as he stuffs his mouth with the last slice of pizza.

“You used to crave take-outs! Especially when we were in Cambridge!” I chuckle, dusting the crumbs off my hands.

“Yeah… Well, I didn’t know how to appreciate Blake then…” Nate mutters.

“You could always learn to cook!” I rib him.

Nate gives me the stink eye while muttering under his breath – something about being too lazy. That was for sure. He wouldn’t even heat up pre-cooked meals!

I’ve been staying in NYC for the last three months. I started at EY two days after New Year and officially moved in with Nate at The Biltmore on West 47th Street. Arianna was staying with the rest of the pack back in our pack lands. We couldn’t risk her exposed alone in NYC while I work.

There was only one other incident after the first inner border breach. This time we caught the rogue fifteen miles from the pack house. It was a female who said she was trying to escape from other rogues and risked entering our pack lands to cross our lands quicker.

After a twenty-four hour hold, my dad and the pack elders unanimously agreed that she was no threat and released her, escorted, to the ends of our pack lands.

My dad, Beta Dean, Gamma Mark, Arianna and I analyzed the situation and decided that it was highly unlikely the two incidences were related. It was too far in between so we decided Arianna wasn’t a target but we still kept vigilant, watching for any unusual movements. So far it was still quiet.

I had somewhat managed to get a hang of the Wolven language. Ok, so maybe I only recognized three words so far – prophecy, red and wolf. I couldn’t even read the words, only recognized how it’s written.

The last four months had been a struggle. I remember the look of horror creeping over my face as I turned the book for the first time, the day after thanksgiving. The Wolven language was not written in alphabets. They had a unique script of their own. So all I saw as I turned the pages were squiggly lines.

I almost gave up then and there but I flipped the next book Nate brought back and that was the Wolven-English dictionary. Thank God!

So I committed myself to memorizing the three scripts for prophecy, red and wolf but it was still too hard. The words were all awfully similar and it took me a month to painstakingly go through one 50-page book.

The sound of my ringing phone broke me out of my reverie. Groping around, I smile when I see Arianna’s name flash across the screen.

“Hi baby, how was your day? I miss you…” I say, ignoring Nate’s toothy grin. He always makes the same toothy grin whenever I’m with Arianna or talking to her. I think he’s jealous somewhat but I’m not too sure. I usually either roll my eyes or ignore him. Today I’m going the eye roll route.

“Caleb! Hi! It was good. Spent an hour running with Anna – my mother. Then I trained for another hour with Beta Dean. He’s a tough cookie! Then I had my lessons with Scott – she was still studying hard for her SATs. I just finished dinner and now I’m calling you! I miss you too, babe. How was your day?”

“Argh… Horrid. Only because you’re so far away from me. I wish you were here…” I pout. I wish the same thing every day for the last three months.

“Oh.. Caleb…” I can imagine Arianna blushing.

“Baby, are you still coming this Friday?” I ask, keeping my fingers crossed. Every Friday, I drive home right after work to see Arianna and only leave early Monday morning and go straight to work.
