Chapter 14

The feeling of unease gnawed at me. I’m plagued by the knowledge that Nate’s found Trevor for almost four weeks now. I never actually got Nate to divulge the information to me. I just kept telling him to sit on it.

I didn’t want to have the burden of keeping things for Arianna. Although, I’m already feeling the weight of this teeny bit of information. Imagine how bad I’d actually feel if I had the low down on Trevor and Arianna’s background.

Damnit! I silently cursed as I made my way towards my car. I was to pick up the rest of the Council members flying in today to JFK. Over the last few days, as the wedding date drew closer, invited guests were flying in from all over the world.

All of Reiko’s family from Japan had arrived a couple of days ago. Now two days to the wedding, the majority of the guests are due to arrive. Most of the younger pack members have had to vacate their rooms to guests and share to fully accommodate everyone.

Security was also a big concern as we have thirty of the world’s most prominent Alphas attending the wedding. Most of them came with entourages – security personnel – of their own but we still needed to ensure their safety.

Patrols were run consistently without breaks these last few days. That’s also the reason why the rooms could be vacated since most of them would be out patrolling throughout the day and night.

Other than all these serious concerns, I also had to make sure Arianna was comfortable being in close proximity with the Council of Twelve, whose members were here in full attendance. My father, being the most revered Alpha in the east coast is held in high esteem by the Council.

We also agreed that since Arianna can’t shift, there was little danger to her secret being exposed. Nobody would know she was the prophesized red wolf. Sighing deeply, I turn into JFK, putting on my game face and steering my thoughts away from Arianna, the prophecy and Trevor. I wouldn’t want to risk Sir David reading my thoughts.

“Ohh… This is so much fun!!” Blake squeals as he skips around in his ceremonial black and white kimono.

I roll my eyes, which was pretty mild as a reaction since the petite Japanese ladies who just finish dressing him were politely hissing at him in Japanese. I doubt we actually need a translator to know what they were saying. But apparently Blake needed one as Reiko’s brother, Yoichiro rushes through the door, pleading with him to behave. The garments were painstakingly put onto him and they couldn’t afford for it to be creased or even fractionally out of place.

I look down at the kimono they were wrapping around my torso and I try not to fidget. Ceremonial garbs, especially those that resemble gowns do not sit well with me. I know there’s a painful scowl on my face, but I could do nothing to remove it. Believe me, I’ve been trying for the past thirty minutes.

I feel like a rag doll. I was being pushed around, twirled back and forth and made to hold my limbs up at odd intervals. The polite Japanese lady who was dressing me seemed unperturbed by my grunts of acknowledgement whenever she asked me to do something. I don’t understand Japanese but I do understand universal gestures.

I slide my left foot into the wooden clog and cringe, knowing that walking was going to be painfully awkward for now. Bowing slightly, I thank the lady for her assistance. There’s just something about Japanese culture and manners that captivates you. They’re all so humbly polite that you feel obliged to return the politeness – not that it’s a bad thing.

I step away from the lady, giving way to Nate who is only dressed in his boxers like I was, a mere forty minutes ago. Stifling a yawn, I carefully made my way towards the dining hall. I’m almost tempted to drag my feet because the clogs were making too much noise against our wooden flooring.
