The next morning, I take the customary early morning drive into NYC and straight to work.

I maneuver my way to my desk albeit a little distractedly. Last night’s conversation with Arianna still weighing heavily on my mind.

“Hey Cal… What’s wrong, buddy?” I faintly register a voice speaking to me.

“Caleb?? Caleb! What’s wrong??” I feel firm hands grasping onto my upper arms and shaking me forcefully.

Shaken out of my thoughts, I look up to see a concerned Nate staring back at me. “Huh?” I ask.

“You were spacing out, man. What’s wrong?” Concern still lacing his tone.

“Oh… Nothing” I say, flipping my hand carelessly, as if I could flip the problem away.

 “Come on, Cal. Tell me…”

I sigh heavily before I spoke. “I spoke to Arianna last night. Found out she still has a brother, Trevor. She claims he doesn’t care about her and she doesn’t want to find him.”

“Unless his heart is made of stone, or if he’s not a pure shifter, I doubt that.” Nate frowns.

“I know… That’s what I was thinking. It’s in our nature to look after what’s ours – mates or family or pack. So I highly doubt that her abduction was taken lightly by Trevor. But she’s so convinced that he doesn’t care about her and hadn’t bothered to find her.” I add.

“And you’re thinking if you should help her find him and unite them?”

“He’s her only family left. They should be in each other’s lives. And I know it hurt her to think that he’s not concerned about her. Plus, I can only imagine what he’s going through if he’s been looking for her. I mean, would you stop looking for Josh if he was taken?”

 Nate purses his lips. “Never.”

“But she’d never agree to let me find Trevor for her. I don’t know what to do, Nate.” I ask.

I really don’t want her to feel that her only family abandoned her. If I could help find Trevor and clear that up, it would sooth her pain. But at the same time, if I went ahead and looked for Trevor, Arianna would be upset that I didn’t listen to her.

I groan in frustration. Damn it!

“Nate, can you help me find Trevor? See if you can find out where he is. We’ll deal with everything else later. I’m sorry I can’t get Arianna to tell us her last name or which pack she’s from. It would make things much easier.”

“Alright. No worries, it just takes some creative sleuthing then. When I find him, I’ll go talk to him, find out what he feels about his missing sister. If he’s a selfish bastard, we’ll never let him near Arianna again. How’s that?”

“Sounds like a plan.” I nod.

Pulling out my phone, I send a quick text to Arianna.

Missing you already. Can’t wait to see you this weekend. Mondays suck =[

The rest of the week was uneventful. I still go to the Council library but moved away from the Wolven language section to the Shifter history section.

I’ll admit my last encounter with Melissa Brewer dampened my spirits but it won’t stop me from continuing my research. In Nate’s words, “it just takes some creative sleuthing.”

Each day after work I poured over book after book of Shifter history. I caught a glimpse of Melissa Brewer a couple of times but she made no attempt to come over so I ignored her.
