Nervously I looked at the gold three and four, nailed against the pale green wood. I was ready to knock and yet I wasn't. I had played the whole scenario out in my head about a billion times and this time I was pulling the strings. Dylan had no say about our date. And still I was scared, terrified even, that something would go horribly wrong. Because I had obeyed him not to take any pills. I needed him to be him, whoever that may be. I scanned the door, took a deep breath and then told myself to stop being a little bitch and just knock. So I did. I took a step back, allowing more space between me and the door. And then I waited. For the handle to be pulled down and for the safe space, the barrier between me and Dylan, to be pulled away. When the door did eventually open, it revealed a stunning Dylan, smirking at me. He wore a white shirt and a pair of dark jeans, a long winter coat thrown over. His eyes scanned my body, from the top of my head all the way down my light grey dress.
"I know I have to tell you you look beautiful in that dress, but honestly I've already pictured you without it and that image is far more pleasant." He chuckled and I could feel the heat rising to my cheeks. So this was what it was going to be like? Him making sexual comments and me feeling more than uncomfortable about it? Well I was here now, might as well give it a shot.
"You don't look too bad yourself." I replied. He winked at me and then closed the door.
"So where are we heading?"
"You'll see."
We took a cab into the city. Dylan sat next to me on the backseat and we barely said a word. Now and then he'd place his hand on my thigh and I would push it off, leaving him in utter amusement, apparently. The driver stopped right in front of the restaurant in which I had reserved a table for us and I paid the kind man. Dylan was not being the gentleman he was supposed to be, but I didn't expect him too. He didn't offer to pay, he didn't hold the door open for me. Let me tell you this, dating is not like the movies and especially not when the man you're dating is an animal.
"So a public place, hu?" He asked, looking up at the shiny letters on the front of the building. "You know this is gonna give some serious problems."
"Well I took my chances. You'll have to behave." I walked towards the front door and into the restaurant. The man behind the reception looked up at me, a kind smile on his face.
"Good evening Miss, how can I-" He was cut off by the door which opened again when Dylan walked in. "Excuse me Miss." The man said to me and then faced Dylan. His kind eyes shifted into a pair of angry and stern ones. "Mr. O'Brien. I'm gonna have to ask you to leave right now." He growled.
"I'm with her." Dylan said, pointing to me. The man looked at me, not fully understanding what was going on and I just smiled.
"Yes. So we would like to have our table. Miss Jessica Whitmore please." I said.
"I'm sorry Miss Whitmore, you are more than welcome to come in, your date not so much."
"Excuse me?" I snapped, feeling indignant about what he had just told me. I knew that something was gonna happen tonight, Dylan warned me about the problems.
"Mr. O'Brien here is on a blacklist, I'm sure he's aware of that. We have the right to refuse him into the restaurant." I scoffed with that. And Dylan? He just stood there, patiently waiting. I let out a deep and angry sigh and then leant over the reception desk.
"I'd like to see the regulations which state that he's not allowed in." I hissed. I had hoped that the man would say that there were none, but of course I had no luck with that. He pulled out a stack of papers from under the desk and handed them to me. On the top of the page stood in tick, bold letters BLACKLIST. A series of names followed, all people who were not allowed into the restaurant. I searched for the part were the regulations were explained. Any person on this list can and will be denied entering the building as they have caused harm to the place in the past. The owner is in it's right to refuse the customer without the need for legal action to take place. And so on and so on. On every single page was a signature from the mayor, the president and the restaurant owner himself. "Oh come on. Is this really a thing?" I asked, handing the man his document back.
"I'm afraid so Miss. Now I'm gonna ask you two to leave." Angry I turned around, grabbing Dylan's hand and pulling him with me. Once outside I let out a scream of frustration.
"I warned you." Dylan said, it was his version of 'I told you so'. I scoffed. I was really fucking pissed. Here we stood, in the freezing cold, with nowhere to go because we wouldn't be allowed inside any restaurant. I could almost cry. This was absolute fucking bullshit. "Jess. Let's go home." Dylan said, grabbing my hand.
"No fucking way." I snapped. "I want a date and I'm gonna get one." I looked up at the building, the wall of stone we were not allowed in. And then a thought popped up in my head. "Dylan you've been here before right?"
"Yeah."
"Is there a terrace?"
"Yeah." A smile crept onto my face and I grabbed Dylan's hand again. I was gonna get myself a nice date and no one was going to stop me. I almost kicked the door open, stomping inside. I placed my hands on the reception desk and looked up at the man, a mean smile plastered on my face.
"We'd like to sit at the terrace please." I said, feeling really proud of myself that I had thought of that.
"Excuse me?" The man replied, raising an eyebrow.
"We are not allowed inside the building, that's what the regulation states. Technically the terrace is not inside the building. So you can't refuse us. We'd like to have a table outside." The man stared down at me, not believing what I had just said. I knew there was no way he could get around this.
"It's freezing outside." The man tried. "It would be inhumane to sit there."
"So you better make it nice and warm then." I said. The smirk stayed constant on my face. I had played it dirty but I was in my right. He simply could not refuse us. The man sighed and came from behind the desk.
"Wait here... I'll get your table ready."
