As the days passed I saw how Dylan gradually changed. Every day he turned more and more into the boy he once was. It was a struggle for him, I could see that. I saw how he tried not to get angry at stupid things, I noticed when he had to bite down his lip to prevent himself from yelling or swearing. His behaviour became better, great even, but he still wasn't really talking to me. He avoided every subject that was related to his past and my curiosity was eating me alive. I knew pushing him into telling me something wasn't the way to work with him. I needed to have patience and eventually he would open up to me.
Dylan had kept his promise. He saw Alex every other day and three days after Christmas we went on a date. It was nice, perfect even. Dylan took me out of town and after a two hour drive we ended up at a lake. It was frozen, the grass was snowed under and the trees were bare. He had parked the car there and walked with me along side the lake. After what seemed like an hour long walk in the cold Dylan stopped me, covered my eyes and guided me further down the snowy path. When I could open my eyes again I met with a tiny little wooden cabin in the middle of the woods.
"It was my grandfather's." He had told me and he had taken me inside. He told of how he had been spending the past week cleaning the place up and making it cosy and warm for me. We spent the day there, like fairytale lovers, baking waffles and sitting by the fire. It had been amazing and I had never felt more in love. But like all things also that day had to come to an end.
It was the 31st of December or in other words: New Years Eve. It was a living hell in the bar. Doors opened at 9 p.m and at 9:30 most of the people inside were drunk off their asses. This particular day of the year was one most people wouldn't remember. While 99% of the costumers were filling their bodies with poisoned liquids - the other 1% probably had to drive - I was working my ass off. But it was alright. It kept my mind off of Dylan. He didn't want to come to the bar to celebrate New Year. He said it was probably for the better, seeing as his reputation usually arrived before he did. He didn't feel like making a fuzz. Tyler was at the bar as well with a couple of his friends. He came to talk to me now and then but he mostly kept to himself.
"Excuse me!" A ginger girl in a bee costume screamed in my ear. Oh yeah, it was costume party. I myself was wearing a unicorn outfit. Rainbow tutu and a shiny horn on my head. I lifted my head to look at her and she drunkly smiled at me. "Can I have another Cosmopolitan pleaseeeeee." I nodded my head and started making her drink. The night went on like that. I mostly stayed behind the bar and tried to keep myself busy. Around 11 p.m the doors flew open and a tall, handsome guy in a disco suit entered the room. Alex. He hurried to the bar and smiled when he saw me.
"Okay listen up sweetie." He started. I glared at him. I was kinda, sort of, still mad at him. "I'm so sorry for what happened last week. Can you please forgive me?" He smiled the kindest smile he possibly could.
"Are you gonna stop talking shit about Dylan?" I asked. He nodded his head and placed a hand over his heart.
"I swear."
"Alright then." Alex squealed, hugged me over the counter and disappeared in the crowd. At 11:59 p.m. Mike dimmed the lights, the countdown was about to start. I hurried from the bar to stand between the people and just like all the others my eyes were fixated on the screen.
"20! 19! 18...!" All of us shouted. I noticed how guys were holding onto their girlfriends, a group of girls were holding hands and a couple of guys had their arms thrown over each others shoulder. "10! 9! 8! 7!" Out of nowhere I felt a hand wrap around my wrist, spinning me around. When I looked up at the person I met with a face covered up by a black mask but those eyes were all too familiar. "3! 2!" I wasn't counting anymore. "1! Happy New Year!" As the crowd screamed he pulled me towards him, lips locking and eyes closing. We stood there, Dylan and I and for a moment it felt like we were all alone in the world.
