Chapter 15:
Melody's P.O.V.
I sat on the kitchen stool and watched Veronica lift the hot cookie tray from the oven, without gloves.
"Are your hands not burning?" I asked, a little shocked.
"No, I don't need gloves." She replied.
"B-but, isnt it hot?"
"Yes, very hot."
"Well then...?" I scratched the back of my head. "Are you a vampire too?" I asked shyly.
She laughed softly, "Not quite. You see, during my 'change', as you could call it, the substance that changes one into a vampire from a human stopped spreading resulting in me becoming a hybrid, not a full vampire. Its very rare but of course something like that would happen to me, it was just my luck! It does have its pros and cons. I eat, having working organs and have average human speed like you do. However I don't sleep, don't drink blood, temperature doesn't affect me but I do have better than average smell and sight."
I sat, taking in the information like a sponge in water.
She smiled at me. "Do you want to change?"
"No." I answered quickly. "Well I haven't thought about it at all..."
"I see. Well I'm just saying considering your uh... situation, but if you ever end up marrying a Vampire changing will be necessary, its law. And of course it'd be advised if your life was in severe danger, I doubt Gray would chance losing you."
I nodded, "I suppose if it were life or death I wouldn't mind so much. Except for the blood consuming part."
She laughed loudly, setting down the tray and placing her hands on her stomach as she put her head back. I was worried she might pop if she kept laughing like that.
She kept her eyes on the ceiling after she stopped laughing. "That's the part everyone complains about, even now my Sylvester complains about it and he's been like this his whole life, he's known no different. He's convinced that in a past life he was a vegan." She smiled widely. She looked back at me and put the warm soft cookies on a plate, setting them in front of me and taking a cushioned seat beside me.
"So, you and Matthew, ay?" She winked at me and nudged me with her elbow.
"What?" I laughed.
"You'd be cute together, I've never seen him act like that in front of any other girl before."
"Act like what?"
"Well I had my two niece's over a long time ago, Matthew and the two girls were in the living room. They were clearly interested in him. They were twirling their hair, pouting their lips and all that and he was completely ignoring them, reading a book, barely answering when they spoke to him. He even went as far as to pretend to be in a bisexual relationship with Raven just to get away from them!"
"And Raven played along?"
"He had no idea what was going on." She erupted into laughter again.
I shrugged. "Maybe he just wasn't interested."
"Obviously he wasn't but ask anyone, before you came along he was the quiet mysterious type. Very stubborn, very arrogant and didn't seem to hold interest in girls that wished to go out with him. He was always smiley but it seems since he met you he' like a whole new confident person now." She said seriously.
"He's crazy about you." She grinned. "Would you go out with him?"
I blinked, a little shocked by her question. "Well, I do like him a little... I suppose I'll give it a think."
Did I like Matt? I thought of him mainly as a brother, he was very sweet and kind to me.
"So, when are you due?" I nodded at her stomach.
"Ah, sometime around December 12th. And just between you and me, I'm having twins." Excitement was clear in her voice.
"Sylvester doesn't know!?"
"No!" She squealed. "He hasn't gone to any of the scans, so it'll be a surprise for him."
I smiled and shook my head. I picked up a cookie and bit off a piece. "Ohmygod." Was all I could say, for words couldn't explain the heavenly taste of the cookie.
"Good, huh?" She smiled triumphantly.
I nodded. The kitchen door burst open and Angel and Matthew gravitated towards the cookies. My eyes widened. Matthew and Angel were dressed, if you could even call it dressed, in baggy swimming shorts with plaid designs and no t-shirts with a towel hanging around their necks each. I wasn't surprised to see perfect, toned stomachs everywhere. I didn't know how but every male Vampire seemed to look like the perfect male model. Maybe it was a part of the whole luring humans to their death thing.
"Going swimming boys?" Veronica asked them.
"Yeah." They replied, digging into the cookies.
"I wish I could swim." I mumbled.
Veronica spoke. up "Matthew will teach you, won't you Matt?"
I narrowed my eyes at her.
He shrugged. "If you're up for it."
"Of course she is!" She answered for me.
Matthew narrowed his eyes suspiciously at her. "...Okay then..." He said, a little unsure.
I walked through the hall upstairs, to my temporary room. I pushed open the door and a scream left my mouth. Ryan was sitting on my bed, waiting for me. I placed my hand over my heart.
"Mel, are you alright?" Veronica's concerned, motherly voice called up from downstairs.
"Yes, I just got a fright." I called down to her.
Ryan chuckled and beckoned me over. I closed the door behind me and sat down onto the duvet beside him.
"Yes?" I asked.
"What, can I not talk to you or something?" He asked, raising an eyebrow.
"No you can. Its just a bit weird in my room." I said truthfully.
"Yeah. Let's go to my room instead. I don't like this room, it feels weird." He said quickly getting up and leaving.
Well that wasn't what I meant but whatever.
I followed him across the hall. We entered a dark blue painted room with cream coloured carpet and black and silver furniture.
"So take a seat wherever, make yourself at home."
I sat on the edge of his bed. "So what do you want to talk about?"
"Well, I'm not really sure. Sylvester just said to keep you upstairs for 10 minutes." He chuckled.
"Oh?" I glanced at the wall where a picture of a forest of cherry blossom trees framed in a chrome frame hung. "You painted this?"
I noticed how suddenly close he was, his knee was touching off mine and I could feel his breath on my cheek. My heart was thudding and it felt sore.
"Yes." He breathed.
I turned my face. I was more than a little shocked when Ryan's lips caught mine. Thankfully this time he kissed a lot softer. His hand snaked around my back and pulled me closer to him, I couldn't resist him. He broke the kiss and trailed kisses down my jaw and onto my neck. One of his teeth softly grazed against my skin. It wasn't a fang but it still brought back bad memories.
"Stop." I ordered, panicking and roughly pushing him away from me.
He lifted his head, "What's wrong?" He frowned.
"Bad memories." I shuddered.
"Oh, of course." He nodded a guilty tone in his voice.
"I think they should be done by now." He continued. "Let's go."
