"Luke," I mumbled walking into our bedroom as tears ran down my cheeks.
Luke motioned for me to come over to the bed. He pulled me into his arms and rubbed my arm soothingly. "What's wrong Darlin'," he instantly asked in his normal sleepy morning voice again.
"I got my period," I bawled into his bare chest. "We're never gonna be able to have a baby."
Luke sighed and held me tighter. "It's okay baby. We can try again next month. I promise we'll have a baby. I know we will." I could hear the hurt in his voice, it made me cry harder.
"Do-do you think I'm infertile," I asked as I looked up at him with red puffy eyes.
"I-I don't know Care... But... Both you and I can get tested to see. If one of us are... Then... In Vitro Fertilization it is. We'll find a way," Luke reassured and held me tighter.
Both of us were quiet... I sniffled and looked up to see tears running down Luke's cheeks. "Are... Are you okay Babe?"
Luke slowly nodded, "Yeah... I just thought that you'd be pregnant sooner. I have so many regrets in life. Like... I wish I could've been able to meet you and marry you earlier. I'll be 39 this year... By the time... We have a baby... I'll be 40 and already half done with life." He sniffled and shook his head.
Tears began rolling down my cheeks again. "I'm sorry, Luke. I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have pushed you way. I'm- I'm so stupid. We-we should try In Vitro as soon as I'm done with my period. I feel like such a bad person. I'm so sorry."
The two of us just spent the rest of that day crying our eyes out in each other's arms.
Luke and I ended up waiting another three months to see if anything would happen. Nothing did. By July we had already been having In Vitro done for two months. I was extremely overjoyed when I woke up throwing up three days before Luke's birthday. I instantly took a pregnancy test, anxiously waiting for the results.
At the time Luke was away finishing up the latest round of his tour. My timer went off and I instantly jumped up to look at the test. I was in pure shock as I looked at both tests sitting on the sink. "OH MY GOD," I screamed to myself and jumped up and down. "Finally!" Tears ran down my face. We finally did it. Luke is going to be so happy.
I quickly picked my phone up and dialed Luke...I instantly regretted it. I should make this a birthday gift.
"Good morning Baby," Luke answered after about three rings. "How are you this morning?"
I calmed myself and replied, "I'm tired... I just... I really wanted to hear your voice. I'm so glad you'll be home tomorrow. I've missed you so much."
"I've missed you too. I can't wait to be home. I can't wait to have you in my arms again, Darlin'," he told me and sighed. I knew what he was going to bring up, "Did it work this month..."
I let out a fake, sad sigh. "No... I uh... I... Got my period last night. We... We can try again next month," I mumbled into my phone and looked down at my feet with a big goofy smile on my face.
"Of course we can. I'll be home for a whole month! We'll have plenty of time... And... If nothing works... We could always try adoption," Luke said with hurt soaking in his voice.
My stomach began to gurgle and I felt like I was going to throw up again... "Hey Luke. I'm gonna go... I love you," I whispered into my phone as I closed my eyes, taking a deep breath.
"Okay Baby. I'll see you tomorrow. I love you," Luke's disappointed voice came from the other end of the line.
"You too," I said and quickly hung up, flinging my phone to the bed and running to the bathroom covering my mouth.
As soon as I was done with my antics I called the doctor to see if I could make an appointment. His receptionist instantly squeezed me in for 3:30... Just an hour. I quickly got ready and went straight to the doctors.
When I got there the doctor was ready for me and was ready to do an ultrasound. "Hello Mrs. Bryan! You said over the phone you took a home pregnancy test and it came up positive," Dr. Tonia greeted me with his usual smile.
"Yes! I woke up throwing up and not feeling well... I took two tests and they both came up positive," I replied happily as I kicked my feet like a little girl.
"Well let's check," he exclaimed and pulled out some gel and a machine. "Can you please lay back for me, roll up your shirt, and slide down your waist band for me?"
I nodded and did as asked. Once he put the cold gel on my stomach and spread it with the wand thing he turned the monitor toward me. "Well, if you look here... You can see both fetuses," The doctor said with a smile.
I looked at him with wide eyes... "Both!? Are... Are we having twins," I asked in both shock and excitement.
"You sure are Mrs. Bryan! Congratulations! They're both very healthy thus far," he informed.
This day couldn't get any better.
The next day when Luke came home I instantly jumped into his arms. "I've missed you so much babe! Oh my goodness," I cried and stuffed my head into his shoulder.
"I've missed you too baby. That blanket may keep me warm... But you keep me warmer," He whispered and kissed at my neck. "Let's go baby! Let's get started on the festivities... Let's make a baby."
I shook my head at him. "I can't... I just got my period," I told him. Disappointment spread on his face. "Next week." Luke nodded slowly.
The whole baby thing was really bothering him as the night went on.
"Luke babe, what do you want for dinner," I asked as I walked into the living room and stood behind the couch, wrapping my arms around his neck and placing my hands on his chest.
Luke sighed and moved his head to kiss me on the cheek. His scruff tickled me. I giggled. "How about that salmon that I brought home from our fishing trip," he asked as he placed his scruffy cheek on mine.
"Sure! I'll make it... But I thought you were waiting until you could make jerky out of it," I replied and pulled away with an eyebrow raised.
Luke quickly got up and followed me to the kitchen. "I was," Luke trailed off, "But, I was reading that the omega three in it... Can help you conceive!"
I giggled, "Of course Mr. Bryan! I knew there was a catch!"
The next morning I woke up with a pain in my stomach. I instantly pulled out of Luke's arms and darted for the bathroom. Once I was done letting the contents in my stomach go brushed my teeth and walked back into our bedroom.
Luke was luckily still passed out. I leaned over and kissed him hard. "Mm" was the sound he made as he opened his eyes wide and then relaxed into the kiss.
"Good morning Baby," he mumbled as I pulled away with a smile on my face.
"Happy Birthday Luke! I thought I'd wake you up that way," I told him with the smile plastered on my face.
"Well that was a nice way to wake up," he replied with a smile growing on his face.
"I have a birthday present for you," I told him all anxious like.
"Already!? It's pretty early," Luke asked as he raised an eyebrow.
I rapidly nodded and rolled over to grab the envelope from my bedside table drawer. Once I had it I rolled back over and handed it to Luke.
He gave me a questionable look and tore it opened. Then he pulled the picture out of it. His face went from confusion, to shock, to happiness as he looked at it. He dropped the picture on the sheets and looked at me. "You're pregnant," He asked in shock as his eyes began to glaze over with tears.
I nodded. "Yeah, babe, with Twins... You see the two little dots?" Full on tears fell from his eyes as he launched forward and placed kisses all over my face.
"This is the best birthday ever."
