“Look what I found!” Louis announced as he scurried into the room holding up a set of blue scrubs. I couldn’t help but laugh.
“Who did you steal those from?” Harry asked as Louis pulled them on over his clothing. My mom had left to go chat with the nurses. All of the boys were looking around the room and getting into things.
“I told you. I found them.” He grabbed a set of rubber gloves and a face mask and put them on too.
“Louis looks like a doctor!” Ella laughed. I smiled. She’s usually very shy and quiet around people.
“Time for your surgery!” he announced, picking her up as she giggled insanely.
“When a doctor comes in, pretend to have a strange accent,” Zayn suggested, smirking. “It’ll confuse them for sure.”
“Yes! That’s brilliant!” Aria laughed, trying out her best Australian voice.
“Is this your wheelchair?” Niall asked curiously, taking a seat and wheeling himself around the room.
“Yes,” she chuckled.
“These things are so cool. You don’t even have to walk. You just get to ride around. How cool is that?” He was utterly amazed.
“I have an idea!” Liam declared. “But it’s dangerous.”
“Dangerous is fun,” Harry reasoned. I rolled my eyes.
“How dangerous are we talking here?”
“Wheelchair races.”
“Dangerous and entertaining are two different things. What are we waiting for?” I asked, jumping up and helping Aria from her bed. Once she was settled in the wheelchair, I went into the closet and pulled out three more. I never knew why they stored the extras in there. It really wasn’t smart on their part.
“Come here, Ella,” I said, smiling as I plopped her down in the second chair. “Who else wants to race?”
“You can,” Liam said. “Ill drive.” I grinned and took a seat in the third chair. Niall plopped down in the fourth chair with Zayn right behind him. Harry peeked out the door to make sure the halls were clear, and then ushered us out like we were troops on a mission. Louis was steering Ella, Harry was steering Aria, Zayn was steering Niall, and Liam was steering me.
“Whoever makes it all the way around and back to the room first wins!” Harry declared.
“Ready?” Zayn called out.
“Set!” Niall added.
“Go!” Louis shouted, and the wheelchairs were off.
“You better not steer me into anything!” I squeaked as Liam ran full speed behind me.
“Trust me.” And I did.
I gripped the arm rests for dear life as we wreaked havoc on the hospital corridors. So far Louis and Ella were in first, Harry and Aria were in second, Liam and I were in third, and Zayn and Niall were trailing behind in fourth. Eventually, we came across a road block. As we turned a corner, we nearly rammed right into Harry and Aria. Louis was stopped right in front of a very unhappy doctor.
“Reverse!” Louis shouted, backing up as quickly as possible with Ella. Harry followed his lead, and Liam did the same with me. We began speeding the opposite direction. I was sure we would get in endless amounts of trouble, but I didn’t even care. It was the most exciting thing I’d done in weeks. Maybe even years.
We passed my mother who looked completely appalled by the chaos her children were causing. I’m sure the fact that Aria was moving around the hospital at high speeds when she should’ve been lying in bed didn’t help much either.
Eventually we got lost. Louis, the leader, didn’t know which way took us back to the room apparently. So we ended up in the cafeteria. Liam, Harry, and Louis were all out of breath as we slowed to a stop. All eight of us looked at each other and burst into fits of laughter.
“That…was…so fun,” I said through my amusement.
“We’re gonna get in so much trouble,” Liam remembered. As if on cue, the angry doctor from before came running up.
“Shit,” I muttered, pushing Aria in the direction of the room. We ditched the rest of the wheelchairs behind us. The boys were close behind me, and we actually managed to move petty fast. We lost the pissed off medic and safely made it to the comfortingly familiar hospital bed.
“That was so close,” Niall said, out of breath as he leaned over.
“That was so fun!” Ella squealed. “Let’s do it again!”
“Oh, I don’t think so,” I said, helping Aria back into bed. I fell back into a chair by the corner, exhausted.
Soon enough a nurse came in giving us disapproving looks. “Were you the crazies parading around the hospital halls in a bunch of wheelchairs?” she asked knowingly. She was a nice lady, someone who had worked with Aria in the past. I couldn’t help but let out a giggle. Everyone in the room looked guilty.
“It wasn’t us!” Aria assured in a terrible, terrible Irish impersonation. The nurse gave her a funny look while I laughed. Niall was beaming with Irish pride of course.
I guess the boys were right about one thing. They don’t do bored.
