We arrived home, still slightly wet and muddy, and Ezra was just as energetic. He ran through to the kitchen to attempt to drink his water, whilst no doubted lay managing to spill most of it on the nearby floor. I kicked my shoes off and motioned for Sam to do the same.
"Did you want anything? A drink or something?" I ask, yawning. Sam shakes his head.
"No thanks." He whispers. I motion for him to follow me upstairs and into my room. I sit cross-legged in the middle of my bed and nod to the space opposite me. Sam copies me gingerly as if not wanting to disturb something. He looks at the walls which are covered in band posters. He nods at my music choice. "You like Bring Me The Horizon?"
"Yep." I nod. An idea strikes my mind. "Let's play 20 questions." I'm met with a confused expression from Sam. "I ask you a question, and you answer it. Then vice versa. Or is that too boring?" Sam shakes his head. "Ok good because I uh... I wanted to get to know you." I mumbled, almost embarrassed. But it was true. Something about Sam was intriguing. I wanted to get to know him, but to know the smaller, simple things and not the big, exciting things. "Favourite band?"
"Avenged Sevenfold." He said after some thought. "Favourite Doctor?"
"David Tennant." I said without thought; it was a given.
"Really, Tennant? Not Eccleston?"
"How could you not like Tennant?"
"How could you like Tennant?" He argued. I placed a hand on my heart.
"I'm heartbroken. You don't like David." I looked away, feigning tears. "I can't deal with this news." Sam giggled. "Favourite TV show as a kid?" I ask, returning to normal.
"I didn't really watch TV as a kid."
"What kind of deranged childhood did you have?" Sam blinks. "Oh. Sorry."
"My turn. What's your favourite.... Toy you had as a kid?" He smiled.
"Had? Had?" I laugh. "Oh, you think I got rid of Joshua?"
"Who the fuck is Joshua?" I reached under my bed and pulled out a box full of memories from when I was growing up. I dug through it and pulled out my old, battered toy dog.
"This," I say, presenting the lifeless and rag-like toy, "is Joshua. You laugh, but Joshua was from the height of society." I placed Joshua back in the box. "Ok then. Birthday?"
"August 17th. Although it hasn't been celebrated in the last few years. Yours?"
"April 12th. Favourite book?"
"Which series?"
"No, in general."
"Which genre?"
"Just in general." Sam stared at me blankly.
"You can't just ask someone that." He whispered. "That's like asking which Beyoncé song is the best. It's impossible to say because they're all the best." I laughed at his answer. "Ok, favourite film." Oh.
"Oh." I thought for a while. "I feel your pain." Sam nodded. I lay down at the edge of my bed to think. "This is so tough." I whined. "What kind of horrible person would make me choose?" I turned to face the ceiling. I felt Sam lay next to me, although he left space between us so it seemed somewhat less awkward. I blinked a a few times, my eyelids becoming heavy. I let them close but soon felt the tug of sleep drag me in to darkness.
---
I woke to the sound of knocking on my door.
"Hey lil' bro." Damon whispered. "Who's that?" He asked, nodding towards Sam. I turned my head, and realised that, during my sleep, I had somewhat cuddled him, and still lay with his back to me and my arm around his waist.
