I didn't sleep at all that night. Not at all. Sam is lying next to me. He is staring at the ceiling. He probably didn't sleep either. We silently clothe ourselves, after which we walk downstairs, where the next heart attack is waiting for us.
When we come in, I see my parents sitting in the living room, drinking a cup of tea with... McKinley! What is he doing here? Why is he here?
"Good morning boys!" My mother says. "We have a guest!"
"I noticed." I say, as neutral as possible.
"Didn't sleep, did you?" McKinley says, in his emotionless voice.
"How'd you figure?" Sam says.
"Crow's feet next to your eyes, and red lines inside of them. That combined with the bags under your eyes, tells me enough." McKinley sighs and my father laughs.
"Isn't that amazing? Can you tell me what I ate for breakfast?" He asks.
"Cornflakes." McKinley says. My father nods enthusiastically.
"How did you know? Did you smell the wheat? Did you see the cornflakes crumbs on my fingers?" On his fingers? Who eats cornflakes with his fingers.
"You still have some on your shirt." McKinley says, pointing at a half-eaten cornflake that is sticking to dad's shirt.
"Oh blimey! You're right!" Dad says, as he grabs the cornflakes and eats it. McKinley sighs again.
"I think I discussed all that I needed to discuss with you." He says as he stands up. "I will show myself out. Have a good day." He walks away, passing me and Sam, and walks out of the front door.
"Creep." I hear a familiar voice say. I turn around and see Claire and Damon standing in the kitchen.
"Who is that weirdo?"Claire asks.
"It's the detective that is trying to solve the murder of Sam's father." I say. Sam nervously nods. Claire smiles.
"Oh, but that's great! Then someone will finally be arrested for doing such a horrible thing!"
"Can I talk to the two of you?" Sam asks. Claire and Damon look at each other and nod.
"Sure. Anything for you, future brother in law." Damon says.
Sam blushes and leads me, Claire and Damon to my room. Claire and Damon sit down on my bed, I take a chair and Sam remains standing.
"So, let me tell you, that I don't want McKinley to solve my father's murder." He says.Claire looks at him confused and Damon shakes his head.
"Why not? Don't you want the one who did it to go to jail?" He asks.
"No. I don't want to go to jail." Sam says, after which he sighs in relief, finally being able to tell someone what he did.
Damon instantly gets what he is saying, and turns pale. For Claire it takes a little longer, but then she shrieks.
"That would mean... you killed him?!" Sam explains them everything that happened that night in the alleyway. He explains what his father did, how he met me like that, and that the murder weapon, the knife, is still in the house.
Damon still looks shocked, but Claire nods.
"Killing is unforgivable, and there were better ways of dealing with you father, but what's done is done. You were just defending yourself. Your biggest mistake was to run away and keep this a secret for this long. Now people will not believe your story anymore."
Sam nods and he looks at his feet. I see tears rolling down his cheeks.
"We need your help." I say. "Sam and I need to get into the house to get the knife out of there, but for that we need someone to distract him. First, we need you two to meet McKinley and Thornes, so we will go to the house. I will explain the rest on the way there.
---
Once again, we stand in front of the house. This time it's the four of us. We walk inside, where people are still searching. McKinley and Thornes are standing in the hallway. They look at us when we come in.
"Look what the cat dragged in." Thornes says. "Our favourite boys and their fans."
McKinley seems to scan Claire and Damon for a second, before shooting out another deduction.
"Boyfriend and girlfriend, obviously. They have rings on their hands with initials, probably each other's initials. Hm... it seems to be an okay relationship, as they are still standing next to each other without any uncomfortable looks. I can tell though, he's only in it for her pretty face and arse, and she's only in it for... what exactly? The boy is definitely the older brother of the boyfriend of mister Valentino, seeing as they look a lot like each other. There is nothing that a girl would find attractive there though. Maybe he should have just followed his little brother's example. Now, the girl isn't too smart, as she started frowning at the first thing I said, and she has a pretty dumb look in her eyes, and the guy is trying to understand, but he can't. Why they were brought here is clear though. Our favourite gay couple wants them to do something here. But what? That's the question isn't it? We should keep an eye on them."
Thornes looks from Damon to Claire to Sam to me.
"What the hell are you doing here kid?" He asks Sam.
"We know you don't want us to do this, but we simply are too busy to care." He shrugs as if it's the most normal thing in the world.
"We wanted to help along." Claire says. "I've seen every single episode of your TV programme, and I absolutely love it. I'd love to help."
"She's lying." McKinley says.
"I am not." Claire casts.
"Never trust a pretty face, Maxwell." McKinley says sighing.
"I do trust pretty faces, Patrick." Thornes says, smiling widely. "It's a gift and a curse. Now then, where would you like to help?"
"Upstairs please." Damon says.
Thornes nods and we run upstairs to Sam's room.
"That was far too easy." I say as I sit down on Sam's bed. "Something isn't right."
"That doesn't matter for now." Sam casts at me. "For now we just have to get that knife. You two need to think up a distraction." He directed the last part to Claire and Damon.
"That won't be difficult." Damon says, looking out the window. "McKinley is leaving."
"That leaves Thornes." Claire says. "How do we deal with him?"
Sam conjures a devilish smile.
"Well, he did just reveal his weakness to us. I have a great idea. Claire, I want you to seduce Thornes."
---
"Let's hope Claire doesn't screw up." Sam says as we walk into the living room. "I mean, I've seen her at work at school, so this should be a piece of cake, but one slip and we're screwed."
"She'll do fine." I look around and find the place where we hid the knife before. I show it to Sam and put it under my shirt. "So, where are we going to hide it?"
"The railway station. That seems like the best location."
"Why? Why there?"
"Nobody ever bothers to check railway stations."
