"And I'm not letting you go."
I slowly let go of Sam and he smiled slightly.
"You ready?" He nods, and we set back off, calmly walking back, pretending we had only just seen the police cars. As we approached, one of the officers turned to look at us and made his way over.
"Do either of you know a 'Sam Valentino?" He spoke, in a gruff voice. He was slightly taller than me, clearly overshadowing Sam, and looked down on him in an almost demeaning manor.
"I- I'm Sam." Sam whispered, trying to not sound scared.
"Sam, your father was found dead this morning. He was discovered in an alleyway with several stab wounds to his body." Sam's hand looked for my mine and I held it reassuringly. His face was sheet white and he broke down into tears. He encased himself in my arms and I rubbed his back soothingly. "We have no lead on the murderer but we have people working on it." He added. The woman appeared next to the officer, wearing a fake smile. She looked mid thirties but the way she dressed told me she was trying to be twenty.
"Hi!" She sang. Her voice was high pitched and annoying, and something about her reminded me of Umbridge from Harry Potter. "I'm Felicity, Sam's new social worker. We've looked through your records and only found an Uncle as a close relative." Sam pulled away slightly but I kept him close. "We contacted him as we know you can't live on your own currently, however due to his residence in America, he will take a few days to travel here. In the mean time, you will be staying at a children's home. You will be able to return to your house at certain times, and your schooling will not change." Sam sighed, and I refrained myself from punching this 'Felicity' in the face. Her high pitched, sing song, pretend-everything-is-fine voice was really beginning to annoy me. "You'll need to go and pack your things, enough for a week. I'll wait outside. We won't do anything to your house, you're just staying somewhere else for a couple days, ok?" No, no this is not ok. Tearing this kid from his home. Bitch. "And you'll have to leave your b- friend," she corrected herself, "here. You can say your goodbyes." She giggled. What I would pay to see her ran over. I'd pay double to be in the drivers seat. She turns sharply and trotted off, her heels clicking on the sidewalk. The officer followed and I looked down at Sam. He nestled his head into my chest.
"I don't think I can do this." He whispered, looking up at me.
"It'll be fine. It's only for a couple days, then you can come home and your Uncle will look after you."
"But what if my uncle's just as bad as him?"
"Then you come live with me." I smiled.
"Ok." Sam agreed. He slowly left my arms and made his way into his house. From where I stood on the side walk I could see him run through the lounge and into the kitchen. I smile, guessing that he's sorting out the knife situation. Smart kid.
Ten or so minutes later, he walks out with a backpack and a duffel bag. He looks over to me and I smile over at him. He begins to walk over but fucking Felicity and her high pitched sing song voice interrupts his path as she practically shoves him to her pink fiat 500. Not a bad car, but in that colour is fucking gross. I give Sam one last, small, reassuring smile and I watch as that and the police car pull off down the road.
I sigh loudly as I turn and make my way to the end of the road, taking a left, instead of right, towards where I'd said I'd meet Troy. I check my phone for any new messages.
Troy: Charlie and Jack and coming with.
Troy: We're bringing booze.
Sent: Bit early to drink, isn't it?
