So I'll be honest and say the way I was planning to take this story has completely changed. I do however have a plan for this now so it should be updated more regularly.
'Mom!' Demi says as she makes her way towards her family with Joe following close behind her.
'He's okay... He's okay.' Dianna says instantly hugging her daughter.
'He is?' Demi asks and Dianna smiles slightly.
'It'll be a long road and he'll need to change some things to do with his lifestyle but he'll be okay.' Dianna replies.
'C-Can I see him?' Demi asks and Dianna nods her head.
'He's just through there.' Dianna replies. Demi wipes her eyes and quickly makes her way into the room where her step-father is lying in the hospital bed.
'Dad...' She says softly causing his eyes to flicker.
'Sweetheart.' He replies groggily.
'Hi... You sure know how to give us a fright, don't you?' She says smiling slightly as she makes her way over to the bed.
'You didn't have to fly all the way out here.' He replies.
'Yes I did.' She says gently squeezing his hand.
'I'm sorry I hung up on you. I just-' She begins and he shakes his head.
'I'm never going to like your relationship with Joe but I can accept that you want to be with him so I'll just have to accept the relationship.' He says.
'He makes me happy, Dad.' She replies.
'I know. Like I said it'll take me a long time to accept him into our family again but I am willing to try, for you.' He says causing her to smile.
'Thank you. I was so worried about you.' She admits and he smiles slightly.
'You know I wouldn't leave you lot like this... I plan on being around for a long, long time.' He says.
______
'Hey, you okay?' Joe asks as Demi walks towards him.
'Mmm... C-Can you-' She begins and he instantly wraps his arms around her.
'I've got you.' He whispers gently swaying them from side to side.
'Why don't we go get a coffee?' He suggests and she nods her head. She keeps her head buried in his shoulder as he glances up at the rest of her family.
'Does anyone want anything?' He asks and they all shake their heads.
'Alright, come on you.' He says quietly. He keeps his arm wrapped around her waist and she rests her head against his shoulder as they make the short walk to the cafe. He orders their drinks before making his way over to the table by the window where Demi is sitting.
'How is he?' He asks as he sits down next to her.
'He's okay. Well, he just had a heart attack but you know what I mean? He did tell me he was willing to try accept you into our family though so I guess that's a plus?' She replies quietly.
'Just seeing him lying there with all those machines attached to his body...' She says, tears streaming down her cheeks as she shakes her head.
'It must be horrible.' He replies wrapping his arms around her.
'I know it can't be easy for you... My entire family being against us but please don't prove them right, Joe. I don't think I could handle losing you again.' She admits and he uses his finger to gently tilt her head up.
'I have no intentions of proving them right, Dems. I know we've not been together too long but one day I'm gonna marry you.' He says as she moves closer to him.
'You think?' She asks and he nods his head.
'I know.' He replies.
________
'Dad will be okay, won't he?' Madison asks climbing onto the bed beside Demi who instantly wraps her arm around her little sister.
'Of course he will.' Demi replies kissing the top of Madison's head.
'Do you love Joe?' Madison asks and Demi sighs.
'I think so.' Demi replies.
'You think so?' Madison asks and Demi shakes her head.
'I know I do.' Demi replies.
'Are you scared?' Madison asks.
'Of what?' Demi replies.
'Letting him in... Aren't you scared that he'll hurt you again?' Madison asks.
'The thing about relationships is you need to decide whether it's worth it or not. There is always a chance you could get hurt by someone and you just need to decide whether that person is worth the risk.' Demi replies smiling slightly at her little sister.
'And you think Joe is worth the risk?' Madison asks.
'Always.' Demi replies.
