Chapter Fourteen
Happy Things and Mood Swings
“Brooklyn!” His angry voice echoed against the apartment walls.
“Yes,” I replied sweetly as he stormed into the living room where I was sat on the sofa. His red face entered my line of vision blocking the TV screen.
“Mattie, move. I’m missing the best part.” I said, trying to dodge him.
“What do you call this?” He asked, holding up the piece of white cloth.
“A towel.” I said in a ‘duh’ tone.
“Correction, a wet towel that was on the bathroom floor. It seems that’s not the only thing on the floor either.” Mattie said looking around the floor that was covered in my clothes. I smiled sheepishly.
“I couldn’t find my top.” I defended holding my hands up in surrender.
“Look, Brooklyn. I told you that you could stay here as long as you want but you have to meet me somewhere along the line. All I’m asking for is for you to clean up after yourself. Okay?” He asked.
It had been three whole weeks since I’d moved in to Mattie’s apartment and each day he would find something else to complain about. I should have been back in New York by now. It seemed that no one was willing to hire someone with a bad track record.
“Okay.” Reluctantly I dragged myself off of the sofa.
I'd been going to school, dealing with the teachers and hanging out with Ryder to take away some of the misery of still being stuck in California. So far Ash hadn't made a single move since the morning I had declared war. This was no doubt one of his great tactics. If he thought that I was going to be constantly on edge and looking over my shoulder until I lost all remains of my sanity he couldn't be more wrong. I knew his game plan, I was just waiting for an opportunity to carry out my attack, an operation I liked to call Operation Anger Ash, inventive I know.
It was just another Wednesday. Once making my mess more reasonable I made my way to school along side Mattie. It wasn't even the end of first period yet when I was being called to the principal's office.
"Look whatever you think I did I probably didn't do it." I said stepping into the old fashioned room in need of updating.
"You're not in trouble Brooklyn, I don't usually do this but Mrs Parker seemed to think it was urgent." He said. Just as I was about to question him further the door opened and Beth sauntered in.
"Okay, I'm confused." I admitted.
"I'll give you two a moment." Mr Johnson said exiting the room. Once the door closed I waited expectantly for Beth to continue only to have her stare at me.
"I'm all for skipping class but how long is this going to take?" I questioned.
"Brooklyn it's good to see you. I'm not going to beat around the bush so I'm just going to come out and say it. After school today you will be coming back to stay with my family again. " Beth said. I stood facing her with my arms folded across my chest.
