Chapter Thirteen

The Beginning of a War

“So it’s not much but it’s home. There’s only one bedroom but you can have the trusted sofa bed. As long as you don’t set the house on fire the kettle, toaster and oven are all free to use, help yourself to any food, TV is there when you want it.” Mattie said, pointing to the different places in his apartment. I dropped my bags onto the sofa whilst gazing around. He had done pretty well for himself.

“Thanks again, Mattie.” I said, wrapping my arms around his waist for a hug. He encircled me with his arms. He picked me up a couple roads from the restaurant and drove me to the Parker house. It didn’t take long for me to grab my things as I left all the designer clothes Beth bought for me in the closet.

“Don’t mention it, it’s the least I can do.” He replied.

“I’ll be out of your way soon, I just need to figure out what to do next.” I said, throwing myself onto the sofa.

“Stay as long as you want, you’re always welcome here. I’m making some food, do you want some?” He asked heading into the kitchen. The apartment wasn’t massive but then again it wasn’t small. It was a perfect size.  The living room and kitchen were open plan, so when the sound of a woman’s voice echoed through the apartment I could see exactly what his expression was.

“Babe?” The woman called out, along with the sound of jingling keys. A sly smirk made its way onto my face. He looked at me, then to door and back again but by then I was already up off my feet in a hurry to beat him to her. I skidded into the hallway almost bumping into blonde haired woman.

“Hi.” I greeted with a smile. Her head shot up from looking at the mail in her hand to me. She instantly narrowed her stunning brown eyes as she took me in. I felt Mattie run into me and from the corner of my eye I saw the spatular in his hand.

“Who are you?” She questioned, folding her arms defensively. Barely giving a glance at Mattie.

“I’m surprise you haven’t heard of me. Charming, charismatic, witty. Ring any bells?” I said smiling. I turned to scowl at Mattie as he lightly hit my head.

“Jess, this is Brooklyn Matthews. Remember the girl I was telling you about? Sarcastic, devious, extremely annoying.” He said. As the words left his mouth I couldn’t resist the urge to stick my tongue out at him.

“Oh! Of course! Brooklyn, come on here. Let me give you a hug.” She said, not waiting for a response. I was held in a very awkward death trap for what seemed ages before Mattie cleared his throat.

“What nothing for your fiancé?” He joked. Once she removed herself from me, she made her way over to where Mattie stood with a crooked grin on his face. He held her in his arms as they continued to kiss only to be brought back to reality by my fake gagging noises. When Jess pulled away Mattie glared at me as if he done it long enough I would disappear.

“Fiancé, huh? Thanks for cluing me in. Does Blake know?” I asked. He froze, scratching his neck under pressure.
