Chapter Twenty-seven
I woke up to lightening and thunder. It quickly became apparent to me that I was no longer in the foyer but in my bed under the warm covers. Another crack of lightening outside made me jump. I glanced at the clock to see that it was only seven pm. I dragged myself out from beneath the covers, the cold air hitting my bare legs. I glanced outside my window to see the lightening light up the back yard. The rain pelted against the window like bullets. I closed the window that was letting in the cold wind from outside. From the looks of it the wind was so strong that I was sure it could unroot the trees from the ground.
I made my way through the house, the only sound was the howling wind. I assumed I was alone until I saw the light coming from beneath the living room door. I pushed open the door to reveal Ash slung across the sofa, watching the news.
“Wait, don’t move, I need to document this moment; Ash Parker discovers the news channel!”
“You’re hilarious. There’s a storm.” He said.
“Really? I hadn’t noticed.” He scowled at me, turning up the volume of the TV.
“It is advised to stay in your homes and not go out on the streets. This is a safety warning.” The weather woman announced.
“Where is everyone?” I asked.
“They’re stuck at my grandma’s house, they went to visit not too long after you left. They won’t be leaving until the storm calms down.”
“Great, so I’m stuck here with you.” I groaned flopping down on the couch next to Ash.
“Trust me, I’m not exactly ecstatic about it either.” He said, switching the channel to a music channel.
“This music sucks”
“Your life sucks.”
“Ouch, Parker, you really got me.” I said, covering my heart with my hand. I made a move to snatch the remote but he moved quickly out of reach, raising an eyebrow.
“Tut-tut Matthews, weren’t you ever taught that snatching is wrong?” He smirked. I narrowed my eyes at him, making another attempt to grab the remote.
“Sorry, too slow.” He taunted.
“What are we, five?” I scoffed.
“Apparently so.”
“Just give me the remote.”
“No way.”
“Just give it here.”
“No, I had it first.”
“I don’t care if you had it first, give it to me.”
“No-”
The lights flickered for a moment before turning off completely, as well as the TV leaving us in complete darkness and silence.
“Well, this is just freaking fantastic.”
“Will you shut up for two-seconds.” Ash said. His voice sounded much louder in the dark. I could only just make out where he was. “Just help me find the torches.”
“Find them yourself” A strike of lightening outside lit up the room long enough for me to see Ash glaring at me.
“All right, all right. Lead the way.” I said. As soon as I got up and begun to walk I went straight into the coffee table. I cursed out loud, rubbing my shin.
“Oh yeah, be careful of the table.”
“Couldn’t have said that earlier?” I groaned.
“Nope.” I couldn’t see his face but I was sure he was smirking to himself. We made our way out of the living room and into the hallway. We were walking slowly and even though there was no reason to it was like we felt the need to be extremely quiet as if we were afraid of waking someone.
