9 | ODE TO SLEEP

The sun had finally risen and Raina awoke to the light shinning through the entrance and illuminating the cave. Raina rubbed her eyes, blinking away the blurriness before she looked at Bellamy and Charlotte. Bellamy was asleep with his curly head of hair resting on his arm and across from Charlotte. Then she looked at Charlotte who was asleep with her jacket still as a pillow and now closer to the cave wall.

It was peaceful. Nonetheless. Raina peered through the cave entrance to see if the fog had cleared. From what she could see, whatever the yellow mist was had disappeared. She moved back into the cave, grabbing Bellamy's shoulders and lightly shook him. Almost instantaneously, he shot up, nearly hitting his head in the cave wall. Raina instantly regretted waking him up as she grabbed his shoulders and stopped him from panicking. "Hey, hey, Bellamy, it's alright." She spoke softly. Bellamy looked at her and then Charlotte who had now awoken at the chaos. Bellamy let out an audible sigh of relief as he relaxed into himself and Raina removed her hands from his shoulders

"What was it?" He asked, his voice slightly slurred and his voice was deep with sleepiness. Raina looked at Charlotte and then him again.

"I think the fog's cleared." She explained. She felt guilty for disturbing Bellamy and Charlotte's sleep, but she was worried about Finn and couldn't leave them without telling them. So waking Bellamy seemed like her own option.

He nodded understandably, standing up and waited for them to follow before he made his way to entrance. As they exited the cave, Bellamy first. He turned to Charlotte who still seemed rather uneasy. "It's all clear." He informed, then glanced at Raina beside of him.

"Anybody out here?" Bellamy shouted. "Jones?"

"We're here!" Someone shouted back. Raina absently toyed with the hem of Bellamy's jacket she was in fact still wearing.

They headed in the direction of the sound and found three people. None of them Finn. "Lost you in the stew." Bellamy started. "Where'd you go?"

"We made it to a cave down there." One of them answered. "The hell was that?"

"I don't know." He paused. "Where's Atom?"

Judging by the look on their faces, he wasn't with them. Raina saw something she couldn't exactly pick up on Bellamy's face.

"Maybe he made it back to the drop ship?" Raina suggested as she turned to Bellamy but he shook his head. Before she could say anything else, a scream pierced the air.

"Charlotte." Bellamy breathed before he broke into a run. Raina followed and was only a few feet behind him when they found the thirteen year old. And then the reason why she was screaming.

"Son of a bitch." He cursed under his breath. "Atom!"

The boy's skin was burned with nasty blisters and his breaths were ragged, hallow ones. He was still alive. It took Raina a second to pull from the horror and turn to Charlotte. "Hey, let's head back to camp, okay?" She suggested. The kid had already seen enough but if Raina could, she wanted to prevent her from seeing what happens next. Charlotte instead shook her head as she walked towards Bellamy.

Charlotte took out the knife Bellamy had gave her the night before, sliding it into his hand. "Don't be afraid." She spoke in a oddly calming tone. Raina had now joined the two, her attention on Atom as he coughed and struggled to repeat the chilling words over and over. Kill me. He was suffering. Raina wasn't a doctor but she knew he wasn't coming back from this.
