It is unwise to be too sure of one's own wisdom. It is healthy to be reminded that the strongest might weaken and the wisest might err. (Mohandas Gandhi)

Well, hello there. I'm still alive, if you're wondering. Jake is too, just in case your concern reached as far as him.

I watch him bend with his palms on his thighs, a posture of total defeat. I said that we were alive, but that's as far as our fortune goes. Dad and mom have had us working in Miss Dawson's garden since I had my cast removed on Friday, and it would be one huge understatement if I said she is a grumpy old sadistic lady. She seems to get a pleasure out of seeing us work our asses off her neglected garden, which might I add was only a month away from being proclaimed as an extension of the Crestshore Forest. Dad says that when we're done it should look like something out of a page in Home Living magazine.

I know what you're thinking, something along the lines of child labor laws and human rights... forget about it, we tried that too. Didn't work at all. I see Miss Dawson seated in her suddenly favorite place -by the window- watching us with a sadistic smile on her face. I feel like throwing the garden shears in my hands to her face just to wipe that smug smile off but for once in my life, reason overtakes impulse.

Jake gives me that wary look that seems to scream, 'what are we going to do!?' I slump my shoulders back further. I am in no mood to think, or to communicate with any other living creature for that matter. I force myself to resume my work. He wants a picturesque garden? Fine, I'll give him one, old motherfucking peefaced dumbshit...

"Whoa, whoa whoa!" someone laughs "Go slow on your old man, girl."

I turn around to see Lars, Dan and Ashton standing a few meters from the garden, laughing their asses off. Ashton is taking a video that will undoubtedly go viral if he posts it. I glare at him but it only adds to their amusement.

"You guys look like zombies!" Lars laughs.

I am resolved not to laugh, but their never ending chortles have me joining in too. It feels good to laugh for once and not be captain grumpy. I notice how handsome Lars is. His skin is dark and so smooth I want to lick it. It must taste like chocolate. He has perfect teeth, and full pink lips that he subconsciously licks every few seconds. He must be an awesome kisser. He has long eyelashes that any female would kill for, and a firm jaw line that makes him look like he belongs in the front page of a men's magazine. My eyes trail down to his torso and appreciatively take in the way his white T shirt clings to his body like a second skin. He must be scrumptious while naked. I am nearly at his midsection, remembering something I'd overheard a girlfriend of my mamma Annabelle say; that black men have big juicy packages worth dying for. Ashton calls my name.

I look at him mildly annoyed that he interrupted my ogling session. "What?"

He does not answer. I don't think he even had anything to say given by the look of anger on his face. He looks jealous. I look at the others to see if they'd noticed me ogling at Lars. They look absorbed in their own conversation. I focus my attention back on Ashton who still looks angry and give him a small smile to let him know that I don't really care if he is jealous or not.

Lars then suggests that we go to his house to cool off. That would be absconding duty, but at the moment I'm too tired to think of consequences. I follow the group to where Lars' car is parked.

"Hey! Where are you going?" Miss Dawson shouts "Come back right now or I'm calling your father."

Tired of her bullshit, I flip the middle finger at her without bothering to turn back. I know it's not nice, what with her being an arthritic old lady, but that doesn't make her less of a bitch.

We drive over to Lars' house which is only fifteen minutes away. When we get there I am dazed by the size of the mansion. It looks like a freaking seven star hotel! The whole place seems to be built of marble and the lawns here are mowed with such precision that I have to stop and stare. No one else seems to hold my reaction since they've all been here. I ignore the urge to tour the grounds and follow them into the house. The first thing I notice in the living room is the framed picture of Sean Larson, an ex NFL player turned business mogul. He is the owner of The Larson brand, a sports company. A framed Cosmopolitan magazine of Nita Larson is close nearby. She is an A list actress and singer, from what I can read on the cover. Never heard of her but, wow, Lars has some famous parents. He seems almost embarrassed when he notices me admiring his parents' achievements.

"Nyanda!" he shouts as his voice echoes in the large house.

"I'm right here, fool," a girl says calmly from the dining room.

She then comes into the living room with a bored expression on her face. The book 'Lectures on Nuclear Theory' written by an author with an unpronounceable name is in her left hand, while the other hand holds a bowl of ice cream. Nyanda did not inherit the same good looks as her brother, but she's still beautiful in her own nerdy way. She has huge glasses on and has tied her dyed blonde dreadlocks into a messy bun. She is wearing work out shorts (although I'm pretty sure she doesn't work out, judging from her showing belly. She's not fat though, she's just not in shape) and an old T shirt with holes at the neck. It is printed 'step out for children with diabetes marathon, 1999'. She looks more of a homeless person, than a millionaire's kid.

"Hey, Nyanda here. Not in the mood to ask about your amnesia." She says in a bored unfriendly tone.

"Not in the mood to explain about it." I answer my voice humorless.

We stare at each other for a moment and then she breaks into an unexpected smile, as if she seems to think I am amusing.

"Follow me, she says.

I follow her into the kitchen. She scoops up some vanilla flavored ice cream, puts it in a bowl and hands it over to me without even asking if I want some. She must be very rusty at social graces, but I appreciate the gesture and pick up the bowl.

"This is so good!" I moan. "I wanna have its babies."

She laughs; a deep honeyed laughter that makes me instantly like her. I know instantly that I have found a true friend.
