Hey guys! So this one is a short one :) The title is from a prompt list. Hope you guys enjoy!!
You'd always seen Newt around the castle, near the Great Lake, the Great Hall, and between classes. You'd heard all the rumors about him but found them quite hard to believe. Of course you didn't know Newt all that well. Your interactions were few and far between during both of your first three years at Hogwarts, despite both being in Hufflepuff. But, things had changed this year.
Care of Magical Creatures was a class you enjoyed immensely. However your enjoyment did not translate into your assessments and exams. Professor Kettleburn suggested you get tutoring from Mr. Scamander who was very skilled in the subject. You agreed but stated that you were not acquainted with each other. Professor Kettleburn introduced the two of you the following class and from then on you were steadily improving.
After spending time with and actually getting to know Newt there was no way the rumors had any truth to them. He was incredibly passionate about magical creatures and maybe some people had misinterpreted that in a negative way. There was no way the kind, sweet, and hardworking wizard you'd come to know was dabbling in the dark arts.
The two of you had developed a friendship, spending more and more time together. Your other friends weren't too happy with this at the moment but you were sure they'd come around.
You and Newt had just finished up with Care of Magical Creatures, helping Professor Kettleburn clean up and wrap up for the day.
"Are you heading to the kitchens?" You asked Newt after packing up your things. The two of you often headed to the kitchens after classes to get a snack, before heading to the common room to get some work done.
"Um, actually," Newt said, picking up his bag, "Leta had something she wanted some help with..."
"Oh, alright," you said, starting to make your way back to the castle, looking over your shoulder you said, "I'll see you later in the common room then."
You walked a few steps when Newt came rushing over to you, his bag almost falling from his shoulder in the process, "Y-you could come along," Newt asked more than stated, running a hand through the mop of hair on his head, and peering out from under it, "if you'd like, that is."
"Are you sure?" You asked, you weren't sure about how Leta would feel, "I don't want to intrude."
"I'm sure Leta wouldn't mind," he reassured you with a smile, he didn't think she'd mind at least.
You followed Newt along a different path than you normally took to get to the castle. You'd heard a lot about Leta Lestrange from Newt, he always spoke very fondly of her, you just hoped she was as accommodating as he said.

You stood in an empty, unused girls' bathroom. It had been a few hours since you and Newt had made your way to Leta. She was very wary of your presence from the moment she saw you. She didn't make any indication of this to Newt but you could tell when you were not wanted.
The few hours after meeting her had been quite awkward and unenjoyable for you, save for the fact that you were spending time with Newt. The three of you had gathered an assortment of different plants and herbs from all across Hogwarts. You were very curious to ask what Leta was planning on doing but you held your tongue, knowing that the young Slytherin would not appreciate it.
At the moment you stood a little ways away from the two of them, deciding to look around at the enchanted mosaic of merpeople on the wall.
Leta sat in front of a small cauldron, adding the necessary items as needed, Newt sat beside her scanning the pages of a rather large book, most likely from the restricted section.
"I can't seem to find that passage anywhere at all," Newt said, Leta however looked to see that you were further away, out of earshot, "Here it is! It says here that—"
"Newt!" Leta sharply whispered to him, putting her hand on the page he was reading, he looked up at her, a confused expression on his face.
"What is it? Something wrong with the items?"
"Lower your voice," she whispered once again, Newt still confused obliged, nodding, "I understand that you're fond of (Y/N), but isn't it about time for her to go?"
"Go?" Newt had very much enjoyed your company, he thought the three of you had made quite the team today, "But why? She was really excited to help. I thought th—" The cauldron emitted a loud noise interrupting him.
Leta took the opportunity to continue, "Look Newt, she was helpful. But I don't think we can include her in the rest of this. She's not like us."
"She is like us," Newt whispered back, gesticulating, "She adores magical creatures a-and she's a very curious person, she's also very intelligent and resourceful—"
"I'm sure she's all of those things and," she glanced your way, "more, but I can't trust her just yet. I can continue this on my own, with some difficulty. But, either she goes or you both do."
Newt looked your way. He didn't want for you to leave but he needed to help Leta like he'd promised. It'd be much too difficult for her to do this on her own. With reluctancy he stood up and walked towards you.
Although you couldn't hear what they were saying, you could hear the whispering. You were sure they were talking about you so you weren't surprised when Newt came and stood next to you. You still had your bag on and followed him towards the entrance.
Before he could say anything, you asked, "Do you want me to leave?" meeting his gaze.
"No," he replied much quicker than he'd have liked but under no circumstances did he want you to think he didn't want you around.
You smiled at him, even though he was staring at the wall behind you, "I understand," at that he looked at you, eyes widening slightly. You understood very well, you'd understood the moment you'd seen the way Leta looked at you.
"I-it's just that Leta," he paused, thinking over his words, "She prefers and is much more comfortable with just the two of us."
"It's alright, I'm glad was able to be of some help," you smiled up at him.
"She'll warm up to you soon, I'm sure of it!" You weren't so sure of that. But your heart warmed at the fact that Newt had every intention of including you in their activities in the future.
"Thanks for allowing me to join the two of you."
"Of course, I enjoy your company immensely," Newt's cheeks had a rosy hew as he spoke.
Your cheeks tinged similarly, "As I do yours," you clutched your bag tighter, "I'll see you in the common room then, if not then during dinner."
With that you were off. However the exchange between the two of you did not go unnoticed by Leta. The both of you failed to notice the glare she was sending your way as you walked off and Newt sat back down, re-immersing himself in the book.
