Chapter 1

Rain falling did not deter the woman in fact it encouraged her. It gave her a push as she believed she had to keep running so ran she did. Lies, they were all lies. All this time she had been living with wolves. Wolves dressed in sheep clothing. Though the curtain was raised now, she still couldn't see clearly, the truth of the light had hit her like a blinding light and she was yet to see clearly through it.

The ache in her heart remained even though she tried to push it away. So she concentrated on running instead. Running made her feel as though she were a little girl again. Free of worries, always smiling. And trusting, too trusting. That was one trait of hers she'd grown up with. And she truly regretted it now, because being trusting had caused her present predicament. No more would she trust again she promised herself. No more.

She'd been the trusting puppet in their game, little did she know their smiles and kind gestures were just to deceive her. They did do a good job deceiving her too. They were skilful at it too, trapping her in it.

Her dress was drenched in the rain causing it to stick to her body, her heels in hand she ran bare footed, oblivious to the cold wind and hard hits of the rain or even of where she was. She pushed her legs to move even faster, salty tears mixed with the rain on her cheeks.

All she wanted was an escape from it all.

Lightning flashed and was soon followed by the sound of thunder. It frightened her a little. She paused and looked up at the sky as more lightning lit up the sky. She wanted a little light in her life too at that instant as life seemed darker than ever, like it had just been shrouded in a dark blanket. Screeching car tyres brought her back to reality. Her heart stopped as fear gripped her, the legs she had willed to move earlier froze. All will of self preservation disappearing as she stayed stock still, she couldn't even breathe. The last thing she saw was glaring headlights.

Daniel drove through the rain, in a happy mood. He was headed home for his sisters birthday which was in two days, he'd planned it to be a surprise visit. His sister's two weeks visit with his mom had coincided with her birthday. He lived an hour away from his mom and a couple hours more from his sister and her family but rarely made checks on them. So her visiting her mom would be a package deal for him, he would get to visit them both in one visit not forgetting his niece. The rain was falling in torrents and he was beginning to think he'd made a mistake leaving in the night which was now a rainy night. Perks of the rainy season as they were in late July, giving the rains the right to have their fun which was now attempting to dampen his mood. But the man's mood was anything but dampened as he had his own karaoke service himself, singing to Sing for Joy.
...Draw near to him he's here with us, Give him your love. He's in love with us.....

And how awfully glad he was that his sister wasn't here to pick on him and his singing, she was a real threat when it came to pulling his legs, no one did it best like she did. She actually did wear the crown of big sister with pride and with the crown came privileges of pulling his legs, her and only her had those privileges she would say.

The wipers swished rain drops away which were replaced in seconds. The lightening wasn't enough help as it darkened his vision with its quick flashes making it hard to see the road before him. The road had no streetlights and relying on his headlights was not enough through the rain heading for the small town he had grown in and left behind when he moved to the next town to get his garage open.

He took a curve same time as lightening flashed again.

Come on lightning you could just help me see the road instead of blinding me.

He hardly saw the figure in the middle of the road and slammed on the brakes which failed to work on a wet slippery road. The car screeched seemingly to halt but slammed into the figure before stopping, he closed his eyes his foot still tightly pressing the brakes only opening his eyes to see a body roll off his cars bonnet.

I just killed someone! was his first thought as his heart began to slam against his ribcage.

Lord please guide me, please don't let the person be dead he prayed in his head scrambling out of the car into the rain to where the person lay. Stopping at the side of the car he checked to see if there was any movement from the figure, through the veil of the rain he couldn't see any.

Mustering courage he moved to kneel next to the figure with blood pooling underneath him or her to check for a pulse. Fortunately there was a pulse he carried the person he now realized was a woman into his car and drove speeding as fast as the wet tarred asphalt road allowed him without driving into another person to a hospital.
