Chapter 22
<><><><><><><><><><><>
Driving through the huge metal gates, feeling out of place. He looked around him to see well trimmed lawns on either sides of the road that led to the huge white building....no make that castle. Parking at the side of the building where a couple of cars were parked, he caught sight of a huge swimming pool.
Who were these people?
Now wondering if the man had given him the right address he found himself walking up the twelve stairs to the grand doors and gave a single knock as the door was pulled open immediately by a short woman, “You must be Mr. Asamoah, do come in, we’ve been expecting you. Do follow me”
He followed silently, looking around, their living room was bigger than his whole and that was not an exaggeration. The place was huge, dark blue sofas contrasting against the white walls, huge chandelier above did well of enhancing the glamour of the room. As they walked into the dining room, different types of aroma greeted him, all mouth-watering smells caused him for a minute to compare his mother’s cooking to this, wondering which would taste better. But that thought was just for a minute, as it came to him, he had to think seriously, he had been invited to Rains home and he already felt lost as though he was in a different world. That though didn’t seem so far from the truth, he realized. He was in Rain’s world.
He entered to see Rains' uncle at the table with a woman he presumed to be his wife. He was appointed to a seat at the opposite end of the table right opposite Mr. Mills.
“Glad you could make it”
He would’ve blurted out that he had no choice and that after all, he (Mr. Mills) had insisted he come and he had no choice but to follow his wishes, but chose not to, so instead he forced a smile and nodded.
That seemed to be a satisfying answer for the older man as he smiled back at him, his wife however smiled and welcomed him, he had just muttered his thanks when footsteps approached the table, a young lady walked up to the table. She was by no means the woman he was expecting to see.
“This is my daughter, Vanessa, Vanessa meet Daniel, he and his family were responsible for looking after Rain the past months” Mr. Mills introduced.
“Hi” Vanessa said with a smile as she sat down and there he could see the similarities between the cousins. They had the same smile. Well almost. He didn’t miss the look on Mrs. Mills face either as she looked at her daughter.
“Nice to meet you” he said with a smile of his own.
“I’m sure we can start eating, whenever the couple decides to join us they can come” and with that he said grace before everyone dug into their meals.
Heels click clacking didn’t need to tell him who was coming, her voice did.

Fred had insisted on taking her to lunch. That lunch turned to a date and almost turned to supper had she not reminded him of the time, they entered the heavily scented room of appetizing foods and clanging of cutlery sets debating with him whose fault it was that they had stayed out late.
All noises ceased and that was when they became aware that they were the only ones talking, quiet loudly in the room.
“Good evening” she said with a guilty smile quickly sliding into her seat, Fred doing same into the seat right next to her.
Laughing a little at the situation, her uncle smiled. “Glad you guys could join us luckily your food was saved” he winked before introducing the guest, “My dear, I think you know Daniel?”
Her gaze then shot towards where he sat, "Daniel? What are you doing here?”
Oh that came out wrong“It’s good to see you Daniel. After our last meeting and sort of hasty departure” Fred cut in.
“Yeah it is good to see you guys too. Mr Mills invited me” Daniel answered with a slight nod toward s her uncle.
“Oh you are welcome then” she said pouring herself a glass of water and a piece of chicken feeling full already after having eaten out.
An hour later, Daniel excused himself to leave, they were all seated in the living room now and she was glad Daniel at least felt comfortable as he laughed at the jokes her uncle made and seemed interested in all the stories he told about his years in the military. Even she was, rarely did her uncle tell his tales from the army.
After wishing them all a goodnight and expressing them his thanks on having been invited, he left with Fred walking him to the door. Few minutes after he left she excused herself, running through the door he had walked through earlier and headed towards the garage hoping he hadn’t left yet. Luckily he hadn’t. He stood by his car as he talked into his phone.
He turned as she approached.
She should have removed her pumps she thought as she started to feel pains in her toes and her slowing to a walk did not silence the clicking sounds.
“I’ll call you back, got to go”
“Hi, I wanted to ask how Rhoda was doing and the baby, well make that the whole family”
He smiled, “They are doing well, I was just talking to Rhoda, she was discharged a day ago and she sends her regards too”
Sighing she nodded, as a fleeting thought quickly raced through her mind and before she knew it, she was hugging him, hugging as in arms wrapped around him.
Daniels' shock was what shook her out of her impromptu mind shutdown. He stood frozen not even hugging back.
Quickly she released him and took a step back.
“Sorry about that, I just wanted to say thank you”
His mouth opened and closed,“Yeah I was wondering what that was for”
“I wanted to say thank you for the time I was with you guys”
“I’ve been thanked already and besides technically I knocked you down, all be it that it was an accident. You can’t thank me for that”
“Yeah maybe but thanks anyway”
He nodded, cradling his phone in both hands, “You know, I wanted to say something when you entered but I was kind of occupied”
“With a chicken thigh I presume” she teased.
“Something like that. But I wanted to say you look beautiful and I think your family is great” he said with a small smile.
“Oh thank you” she hoped he wasn’t setting the mood to become awkward. “Its good to know that even with aching toes, I still look beautiful. So I'll see you tomorrow”
He nodded, standing straight, “Of course, you have a good night”
“Good night Daniel” she said watching him enter his car and drive out of the compound. She waited till the gate was closed after him. Thinking she heard receding footsteps, she turned but saw no one in sight. Ignoring her aching toes, she walked as fast as she could in the pumps back into the living room.
