Incessant ringing probably woke up all the tenants as he blindly sought for it on the bedside table with his hand. After restless searching, he finally picked it up and pressed the answer button.
“Daniel?”He was still half asleep, “Who is this?” he grunted.
“Its Monica”
“Monica who?”
“Daniel, it’s me, Monica”
He sat up, “Money?” Money also known as Monica was Vincent’s younger sister.
“Yes its me, I know you were asleep and I’m sorry for waking you up but you really have to help me. It’s Vincent”
All traces of sleep disappeared with that information, “What happened?”“I don’t really know. I just heard he and Harry arguing. Harry must have said something and he went all macho on him”
“They fought?”
“Yes” she clarified, “But he left the house after that and won’t pick Serwaa or my calls. You need to get to him before he does something stupid”
“Hold on”
The room was fairly dark but somehow, the familiarity of the room was etched in his memory as he moved to the bathroom to splash some cold water on his face. His teeth started chattering from the coldness of the water. He grabbed a towel quickly and wiped his face before moving back to the bedroom. He picked the phone he had so carelessly tossed on the bed, which was lying in a precarious position and any slight movement would have caused it to go tumbling to the ground. The screen was lit showing Monica’s call was still on hold, he pressed the button to remove it from hold.
“Talk to me”
“Can you please try to get ahold of him? Serwaa is worried”
“I’ll try. But tell me exactly what did Harry do?” he knew Harry was annoying sometimes and had driven Vincent to some points where he had really gotten on his nerves but never this far. It was a known fact Vincent hardly lost his temper, he wouldn’t be surprised if Harry had gone on and bitten more than he could chew this time. And he didn’t doubt that the topic of the argument would be Serwaa.
Monica went silent, her steady breathing the only evidence of her still on the line.
It took him calling her name before she spoke, “You’ll have to speak to him Daniel.”
That bad?“Yes, I thought he was going to kill him” Monica said letting him know he had been speaking his thoughts aloud. “I don’t like it when they fight. This time they both went too far and it scares me that the next time Harry angers him it might just be the last act of driving the nail into the coffin”
That was definitely not something he was looking forward too, “I’ll get on calling him now”
She said her thanks before hanging up. Right as the call ended Daniel looked at his phone to see he had three missed calls, two from Vincent and the third from Monica, all just minutes before he had picked Monica’s call. He saw the time read one seventeen in the morning from the digital clock in the right corner of his phone. He tapped the call key under Vincent’s contact, and waited four beeps before his call was picked.
“I know what you are going to say, just don’t say it right now” Vincent’s voice came through, somehow low and quiet.
He prodded him, “What was I going to say?”
Silence stretched and he could hear the faint sound of a car’s horn, “Vince, where are you?” he said but got nothing for a full minute.
“I don’t know”
