Nessa sat on the cane chair that creaked with the slightest movement she did, the room was in disarray with a couple of disposable spoons lying in the corner of the room, brown curtains that probably were once a cream colour shielded the sun from entering. The room smelt like fermented yoghurt but that really wasn’t a big deal as far as Rain could see, she sat on the arm of the chair, Nessa had definitely not offered her to sit in. The tension in the room was thick and she could feel the confusion radiating from Fred as he fidgeted where he stood.
Rain had thought Nessa would be sporting a belly but there was none, a board flat stomach showed instead. Her cousin hadn't changed, just her hair had been cropped short giving her new look, which she could say suited her. But then again, now that she was thinking clearly, she wasn’t surprised as she realized this was a situation involving Nessa. And lets just say Nessa was not someone who could be content.
“I don’t understand this, you were pregnant just a week ago” Fred asked from where he stood
Nessa shrugged giving no answer, her eyes remained on Rain.“Did ....did you lose it?”
At that, Nessa turned and stared at him, “You can’t lose what you don’t have Freddy”
“What do you mean by that?
“Its simple, she was never pregnant” Rain answered him.
A grin came across her face, “Always had to be the smart one cousin”
Fred still couldn’t understand what was going on, “But your doctor called me updating me on your conditions after every check up you went to. I even once saw you with a belly”
The young woman shook her head sadly, a smile appearing on her face, “You are so dense, those were all staged. Besides you never met the doctor”
"Why would you do that to me?"
Sighing she put on a bored expression, “Don’t think you are that important. I didn’t even do anything to you. come on”
“You didn’t do anything to me? How about making me believe I had a baby when there was no baby?”
“You were just a means to achieve an end”
“What?”
“Me” Rain interrupted their banter as it seemed to her, “You did it to get to me”
“And I did, not to the level I wanted but I did”
“Why would you do that to me?”
Nessa stood and paced the room, “You don’t get to question me”
“Oh but I think I do, one doesn’t do that just for doing it sake”
“Well see it as payback for always taking what I wanted . you always had to have the perfect part, perfect life” her eyes settled on Fred, “Perfect boyfriend now turned fiancé”
“Are you serious? The first car I got for my birthday had to be given to you because you complained bitterly about your car then saying it didn’t look classy enough. And thats not the first nor the last time that happened. Right now arguing about such stuff seems childish. I thought you’d grow out of it by now”
“You broke the last straw by taking what was mine”
“What? Fred is it now?”
“You know what I mean, Mills enterprises”
The absurdity of Nessa’s statement had her laughing, that’s just how absurd her cousin sounded. She stood up, “I think I’ve had enough of this, you know what, call your parents and ask them who owns that company and then we can talk. But I’m surprised you will go to such lenths over a company just to get to me. By the way I forgive you” and with that she took her leave. Fred followed although quietly as they got out of her apartment.
